  • The warm evening sun of the American South illuminates her face. Traute Lafrenz (99) is sitting in the swing chair on the porch, drinking iced tea. Her features suggest modesty and contentment. Her name is only really known to historians. Yet at school these days, every child learns about the history she played a role in.
    There are numerous books, movies, and documentaries about the “White Rose” - the anti-National Socialist resistance group that grew up around the siblings Hans († 24) and Sophie Scholl († 21).

    Traute died on 6 March 2023. In fact she did more than shown here, she took resistance leaflets to Hamburg - given the searches that was an extremely brave thing to do.

      Wow! That means she may have been instrumental in getting all those leaflets out of Germany and into the hands of the British who made millions of copies and had them dropped from RAF bombers over German cities.

    4:44 looks like she's wiping tears away. The unjust deaths of Hans and the others 75 years ago still brings her to tears and it's very moving to see that. My favourite quote from the flyers: Vergeßt nicht, daß ein jedes Volk diejenige Regierung verdient, die es erträgt! / Do not forget that every person deserves the regime it is willing to endure!

    There is someone named Inge Scholl, who says she is a surviving sister of Hans & Sophie Scholl. She said their parents and younger brother were able to visit Hans & Sophie to say goodbye, half an hour before their execution.

    I thought Sophies parents got to the trial while it was going on...and were able to meet with Sophie for few minutes before her execution. That has been reported by many sources and portrayed in the great 2004 film the The Final Days of Sophie scholl....

    5/19/22 The American people slumber on in their dull, stupid sleep and
    encourage these fascist criminals; they give them the opportunity to carry on their depredations; and of
    course they do so. Is this a sign that the Americans are brutalized in their simplest human feelings, that no
    chord within them cried out at the sight of such deeds, that they have sunk into a fatal consciencelessness
    from which they will never, never awake?
    It seems to be so, and will certainly be so, if the American does not at least start up out of his stupor, if he
    does not protest wherever and whenever he can against this clique of criminals, if he shows no sympathy
    for these hundreds of thousands of victims. He must evidence not only sympathy; no, much more: a sense
    of complicity in guilt. For through his apathetic behavior he gives these evil men the opportunity to act as
    they do; he tolerates this "government" which has taken upon itself such an infinitely great burden of guilt;
    indeed, he himself is to blame for the fact that it came about at all! Each man wants to be exonerated of a
    guilt of this kind, each one continues on his way with the most placid, the calmest conscience. But he
    cannot be exonerated; he is guilty, guilty, guilty!

      katelyn m., in the film "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" it appears as if they did. However, it is possible that while the parents knew their son and daughter were sentenced to death that they did not necessarily know that it was going to occur just hours after visiting them on that day.

    I obviously feel the deepest respect and admiration for them ALL. Having said that, it's interesting to notice in Traute's words that, contrary to today's widespread glorification of Sophie while the others tend to take a backseat in the narrative... Sophie was NOT the leader of the movement in any way. I guess her being a woman makes her a natural favourite with gender identity buffs, SJWs and radical feminists. Convenient for their narrative...

    • @richardm1635
      @richardm1635 Рік тому +2

      As this feminist sees it, I don't claim Sophie was the leader. I find the young men of the White Rose incredibly impressive. But given the cultural strictures on women's roles of that era, that women chose to also risk their lives for the cause adds an extra dimension to my admiration.
