Tori has a very smooth and pleasant voice. Yes, Karen Carpenter voice still there, but glad Tori is exploring new things with her voice. She is becoming herself as an artist.

Tori is 20 and from Minnesota. She was at the Carpenter's 55 Anniversary April 25 this year at the United Methodists Church in Downey, California with her father and gave a performance that included Yesterday Once More. Richard Carpenter made a surprise appearance on the last day and word is Tori was asked into a side room and Richard followed for a meet.

Pretty much as it happened. It wasn’t Tori alone, there were a lot of dignitaries there, that night. But Tori did get some one on one. That picture is on my thumbnail of her live performance from the Thursday concert. It’s on my channel, linked in my ID graphic.

I am with everyone else. Tori is the love of my musical life. She just released a video of her singing live for the first time in front of an audience singing Yesterday Once More. A real voice! She also has a recording with a new arrangement of the Ray Charles classic Georgia On My Mind. Every time I listen it takes me to a special place (Goose Bump Heaven). Love your reactions and comments. Thanks!

It has been statistically proven that it is physically impossible to not fall in love with Tori Holub. It's her amazing natural vocal ability, but also that she is an old soul. She brings something amazing to the table that hasn't been seen in decades. Truly a one in a million talent.

I saw this first a few days ago and was convinced it was from one of the later Carpenters albums or Karen's solo album or something and I just wasn't as familiar with it. Then reading the comments I saw it was an original. It's not clear to me if she wrote it, on her video she writes, "Something To Believe In was brought to me by the incredible Richard Kraft and produced by the lovely Jimena Caballero, who worked to arrange and produce the song with my style in mind." Whoever wrote it, it's such a classic Carpenters vibe.

It's great we are now getting a choice other than the latest so called Pop music, with young singers reviving some of the old classics and even writing new songs like Tori's, which would have been classed as Middle of the road music back in the day. Fingers crossed it' a trend that catches on.

Been a Tori fan from the moment she unleashed that magical voice on my ears (sometimes UA-cam brings you a gem of a suggestion). Great review Jeff, it is indeed a lovely song, performed perfectly. Tori, thank you for always making me smile & for sharing your beautiful voice with us all.

  • @gregdcross

Jeff, you and I grew up in the same period with very similar exposure to the great music that came out during that time.
I wished everyone would stop saying Tori's videos was cover of Carpenter songs. They were not covers but instead tribute performances. Her intent, as a huge fan of Karen and the style of music, was to try to get as close as possible to Karen's voice with phrasing and pitch and yet still have her own. If a person listened blindly and wasn't told it was a test, they'd swear it was Karen's voice and recording. That is what makes thise videos amazing.
Now Tori is singing originals and with her style and we see how we are blessed with a young great artist. For the diehard Laren fans that only want Karen, they will moss out. What's wrong with having Karen Carpenter AND Tori Holub?!
Lastly, what has happened with pop music is similar to what has happened in cinematography. Back in the 1970s, artist held long tones and didn't keep having unneeded runs all over the place. Today many singer's Tori's ahe don't hold a note longer than 1 second and can't keep on pitch. Movies are also shot with quick camera shots and the camera is bouncing all over the place. It seems both industries are run by people with high levels of ADD and what they produce isn't much quality. I want to see songs that are song as if the voice is a brush slowly painting a beautiful landscape and Tori has the chops to do it. God bless her.

Such a FAN. I also miss hearing music like this as well. I was born in 1968 and grew up listening to the Carpenters and I agree that this song is just like a new song from that time period. I really think she can add to the genre and bring back this timeless era of music. She's picked up the baton that Karen laid down when she passed away. Go Tori go!!!

I commented on one of your previous videos something you'd be impressed with, that she has a demo of harmonic layering done by Richard Carpenter. She did this on a TASCAM multi-track PortaStudio. In the video, she lamented her ProTools sequencer was giving her problems that day. So I won't rehash that (though I just did). My one ongoing thought is that it's impossible not to fall in love with this wonderful young woman by just letting her gorgeous singing wash over you. I'm with you in being happy about her doing originals, and I hope she ultimately puts together a collection of them and puts that out. She's remarkable.

I am certainly a fan. You are absolutely right about the music of late 60s and early 70s. Groups like The Carpenters, Bread, America, along with soloists such as Mini Ripperton, Dianna Ross, Roberta Flack, Janis Ian, Dionne Warwick, etc just simply do not exist in todays music. I miss those days when a new song is discovered over the airwaves on crackling thin sounding AM radio.

Her lower register is not quite Karen, but close enough for government (covernmint?) work, and lightyears ahead of that AI dreck i was being bombarded with a few months ago in Karen's name. But her higher register seems to be something special. Where Karen might whisper, Tory can belt a little if the song calls for it. I am definitely a big fan.

I say it’s like; Karen is in The Basement, Tori is a few steps down the staircase but she can follow ON-J up to the stratosphere, that Karen never could. This is a very impressive song, sung by an exciting and musical singer. I would be interested to know what coaching she has had as a singer. The comment about Tori tastefully leaping to higher notes without "transition" to a different register is something that the singer teachers impart .. Thank you again Jeff! I knew you were going to love this, I mean BakerStudios kinda said it all. It happened to me last October when UA-cam said “you may like THIS!!!” UA-cam has messed up a lot, that recommendation, it was perfect. I’ve been on the Tori journey since and have requested her songs over the months from a lot of reactors and analysts. I thank my friend Ron for pointing me at you.
I can give you a few tidbits I’ve learned and will link to a recent interview that will show you the person behind the voice. Tori is 20, and from the Minneapolis area. She’s self taught on singing and piano by ear and guitar with lessons and plays by ear. She does write songs and that reveal could be coming. As of today 4/21/24, she is either on her way or preparing to be on her way. She’s going to HOLLYWOOD! Well, maybe a few miles south to Downey, CA. She’s performing a couple of songs at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration, on the Acoustic Night (4/25).
A question Lee got an answer to from Tori in the interview. Does Richard know? The answer with a lot of “squirming” was yes. She wiggled out of answering any more. A highlight of the interview.
I hope this whets your appetite as more is coming and there’s a small library of completed songs, like this one. There are four more on the streamers and iTunes. So, I’d encourage folks to get some, in certainly have. I can ask Alexa to play Tori Holub and if I’m lucky, she will. Maybe some Tori Amos?? LOL. She’s got another original that was written by a team and offered to her after they heard a Carpenters short. That’s called Christmas Again. One of her three Christmas songs up in the streamers. One more factoid and I’ll stop. The co-writers of Christmas Again, Steve Eaton and Donnie Demers. Steve has THE connection. He wrote: All You Get From Love Is A Love Song. The last Top 40 hit for Carpenters. More to explore.
Thanks again Jeff VERY MUCH!! It was fun watching you melt like we all do. I learned I’m a bit older. I was 14 when I bought Close To You in 1970. My adventure started then.
