The end of August meant the resumption of my travels on the canals so I set off again from where I left off in Vlog 184 - Fradley Junction - and went up the Trent and Mersey canal towards Handsacre, in the process managing to look like an utter incompetent as I bashed into another, stationary, boat at a lock queue. Woe is me :-(

i'm a volunteer lock keeper and during my training i was told that we are there to assist and not replace - however, when I see a 'single-hander' I usually ask them to stay on-board in order that they can maintain control of their boat whilst in the lock
HH, ref you standing by if asked and given your remit, are there times when a boater has made an absolute cock up and damage to the lock and gates is almost inevitable?
Or, if a holiday boater, say, is ill advised (by themselves) to get their nippers/parents to attempt to wind paddles or push gates far too heavy for safety?
What is the situation then? Do you exercise "executive authority" and halt the proceedings until an "understanding" is reached or do you watch like a hawk and pray that people, boat and lock survive the experience?

Two Guy's sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Another great video David.

The odd contact with another boat happens occasionally, it just dents your pride a bit, particularly after you have been cruising for a few years and reach a point where you are uber confident you know how to handle your boat. Great video as always, enjoyed the poetic description of the rain too..
Hi David, canoes are open-topped with gunnels usually worked by two people while kayaks are closed from front to back with a tied arrangement around the waist of the operator to keep the interior of the kayak dry.
Here's a bit of Canadiana for you: an Eskimo roll is a trick that accomplished kayakers can do that involves rolling the kayak over one side by adroitly using the paddle and then continuing with the kayaker transiting from one side to the other under water and coming up on the other side; a 360 degree rotation above and below the surface like barrel-rolling an aircraft. Look one up, it's quite fascinating to watch.

To complicate matters a bit more...(old timer canoeist here)...canoes can also be decked over like a kayak. Look at the paddles - a canoe paddle has a T-grip and one blade, a kayak has 2 blades. A canoeist in a decked C-1 kneels on a small pedestal with heels touching heiny, a kayaker sits with legs in front.
An accomplished C-1 boater can also roll up after flipping. It’s rare & takes a lot more muscle, but even an open canoe can be rolled up!
Canoes tend to be open top. The rowers kneel inside the canoe, or sit inside if there are small benches, which there often are, and propel themselves forward using - crucially - a single-bladed paddle. In contrast, kayaks are closed-deck, with a hole in the middle for the pilot to climb into and sit in

I'm not 100% convinced that the guy in front of you here knew how to handle a boat either.
When stuck on a mud bank, throttling forwards just pulls the boat down further, as it evacuates the water under the boat and throws it out the back. The way to easily get off a mudd bank is mid-throttle reverse, so the prop pulls water under the boat and raised it just a little. It should slide off then... or you can reverse into the middle of the canal and then go forwards. [ I'm quite sure I posted something similar on one of your other vlogs ]
Yes, I've done the "diagonally stuck" manoeuvre a few times. We had a wide-beam boat on the Leeds & Liverpool a few years ago. That thing did not want to go in a straight line. As soon as the front or rear got to a shallow section, it would get pulled in (Thanks to Mr. Bernoulli, no doubt) and the other end would go the other side (pivoting around C of G).
I guess in your situation, throttling forwards bringing the rear to the right *may* have stopped the front colliding.
Oh well.

A Kayak is what most people wrongly think of as a canoe. It's the one that is a complete shell top and bottom with a hole in the top that you sit in, with only your stomach up showing. Usually used with the classic double ended paddle held across the Kayak and alternately dipped in each side to move forward.
A canoe (think canadien, Davy crocket and racoon tailed hats), is completely open topped, usually with bench seats across that you sit and paddle from or kneel on the floor and paddle from, with a short single ended paddle ghat you hand from side to side, dipping it in, to keep straight.
Slight complication is that in Europe and certainly in the UK, canoe has historically been a term applied to both types of boat, with 'canadian' canoes alternately referred to as open canoes. The umbrella organisation for all 'canoe' national bodies is called the 'International Canoe Federation', so the clue is in the name! Contraversially they have also taken on Paddleboarding (SUP) recently, but that may be about Olympic certification/funding. 40 years ago I was 'canoeing' in a closed canoe and no-one ever called it kayaking. Nowadays that green boat on top of the narrowboat is always referred to as a kayak!
It's no wonder people get confused.

Her artwork is truly delightful - reminded me of Beatrix Potter’s illustrations, but clearly her own giftedness and style.Your camera work and narration are SO, SO good, a pleasing combination of fact and literature. It’s like being there. Not editing out the bump was a good move. It would be perhaps a bit like not trying to cover up a pimple. Embarrassing, but common to us all. In one thing or another, on one level or another, we all can relate.

Honestly my friend, your videos are such a pleasure to watch. I look forward to everyone. Your a natural at narrating and teaching. You have a very soothing voice, not monotone at all, just very pleasant. Your also an excellent boot crasher, I know that's not a word but it's fun. I'm a patron of Anna and Kath also, aren't they terrific.
I remember being so proud of my boat handling skills; I had borrowed my Dad's boat, a 36' cruiser with twin screws, and had, I thought, mastered the various techniques of handling the boat- you know, crabbing almost sideways with the use of the twin throttles, and so on, making use of what could be a very strong current on the rivers of California's Delta. I remember the absolute horror I felt when I managed to push the port throttle forward, instead of reverse- and managed to swing the bow of the boat in to slam against the side of a much larger motor yacht. Good thing the crew aboard the other yacht was notably more professional than I was- they'd seen the accident unfolding, and had hustled to get several fenders into place.
As it was, I got a very strong lecture on the proper methods of boat handling from the other vessel's captain. I remember wanting to crawl under a rock, I was so embarrassed. In the end, though, I learned a valuable lesson, and got quite a lot of knowledge imparted to me by a true professional; all in all, the accident was quite beneficial.
When I told my Dad the whole story, he just had a hearty laugh... and told me that, once upon a time, he'd had a similar lecture from someone else.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, my dad once went to kick us away from the bank near a pubs beer garden full of eye ballers and fell in the canal off the stern, meanwhile 10 year old me chugged away gripped in panic. He was a raving alcaholic so that didn't help.

I really like seeing drone footage of the various marinas.
They are all so different and yet similar.
There’s just something about seeing many many boats all snuggled up together in the same place.
The pleasing geometry of it all.
I imagine that there must be way more boats on the canals today, than there was back in they peak working days.
Maybe I’m wrong, the statistics would be interesting - that’s if they exist that is.

Yeah! I would think living on one of those Boats... not being in a hurry has got to be a virtue for you that you must really embrace.
Banging into other boats does happen, not just with narrowboats. In '88 or '89 we were motoring our ~30' sailboat into a large commercial lock when we had a clutch failure, with the engine stuck in forward. My dad didn't immediately grasp the problem and tried to reverse at full throttle... banging at full throttle into the lock wall, bouncing off it and straight into a commercial freighter, likewise at full speed, on the other side of the lock. No harm done to them or us, though we did hear a few choice curses from the captain of the commercial vessel. :)

If you haven't done something embarrassing in a narrow boat then you haven't been trying hard enough. 60 foot of flat bottom and no keel and a cross wind will always be a challenge. It's what makes it also to rewarding like when you successfully ferry glide across the Severn river current to enter the canal at Worster! My best effort would have to be tying up the boat in Stourport Basin in October just a bit too far out. My wife falls in... she let's out a scream... I leap in fully clothed after abandoning our 3 year old on board! 2 very wet bedraggled parents after and a coal fire going full bore!

Indians paddle canoes with a single blade either sitting or kneeling. Inuits as in Greenlanders paddle a Qajaq or Kayak with a double ended paddle i.e Greenland Stick. Really enjoy your videos by the way.

Ah! Not only did you bump him, but you then scraped down the gunnel. I could feel your pain the moment the bow started to swing. There is nothing worse than knowing exactly what is coming, knowing there is NOTHING you can do to stop it, and then being forced to both watch and participate it. So sorry for you, but you are not alone in your pain.
Very interesting! I live on the Oregon coast so am very familiar with boats. In addition to ocean-going boats of all sizes, there is a large river here that, with a jet boat, you can travel up for miles and miles, if you are brave enough. No calm canal, by any means.
Jet boats can travel in as little as 6" of water, when on plane, but I had a small (wooden) propeller driven boat which did well until the water depth dropped below 2' deep. At that point it was a case of lift the motor as fast as you can in case the depth drops even more! Going up the river through the rapids areas (referred to as "riffles") is fairly easy: STAY IN THE MIDDLE. Coming down? Well, that is an entirely different story.
You see, when coming down the river, well, you really can't just stop. Imagine coming down a river, through the fastest part of it with big rocks all around you and all of a sudden, you see that the coarse of the river is heading straight at a sheer rock wall. You can't stop where you are. You can't even slow down and attempting to do so would likely sink you. You are moving at roughly 15-20 MPH. You know the current hits that sheer rock face and then swings away from it and you can see it's deep with nothing to hit (other than that wall). Your boat will want to follow the current and should be responsive enough, but there is always that "what if" scenario playing in the back of your mind. You hit the gas hard, tighten your grip on any pending bodily functions and go! Absolute terror and why I quit running the river.
When going up the river against the current, if you come to a riffle or even a large, potentially shallow spot, if you cut the throttle, at which point you will usually stop almost immediately. Then you can increase the throttle just a bit so as to hold your position while deciding what to do. When coming down, this is not the case and in fact, there are times where you are absolutely unable to stop, because even if you had enough power to hold a flat-stern boat against the fastest part of the current, it would literally swamp the transom and sink your boat in seconds. Something similar happens with tourists who are unfamiliar with river boating and drop their anchor in the wrong spot. Anchoring in the wrong spot has killed boaters out here.
I love your videos and watching you travel. I was curious about the potentials of bumping into other narrowboats but never thought about it happening in the way it did with you. I guess I never fully realized how shallow those canals are. I always assumed the only bumps (not caused by random, total idiots) would be during docking, sharing locks, or passing while in the midst of very crowded areas filled with impatient boaters.
