Since there are so many comments talking about the time it took to put water on the fire, I thought I would put the fire into perspective:
#1: The story is in the radio traffic
#2: Firefighters were met with an advanced fire on arrival. There was charged smoke seeping from the front windows and every crack in the buildings cornice and cockloft, indicating that fire had likely already extended into the cockloft. For those who don't know what that is, it is a void between the top floor ceiling and the building roof that runs along the entire building. In this space fire can spread rapidly undetected.
#3: The fire apartment was packed full of waist deep clutter. This condition made it nearly impossible to enter the apartment due to the door being jammed shut. Furthermore, it creates many obstacles for firemen once inside, one said that "we never once touched the actual floor there was so much stuff."
#4: The door was secured with a fox lock which is impossible to know when there is fire and smoke pushing at the door. Members were flowing water through the crack in the door which is all they could do to keep it at bay while other members took the door off its hinges.
#5: Multiple lines were operating inside. One line at the front door and another that was attempting access by breaching a wall. This all takes time. As soon as these difficulties were recognized a line was stretched up the front fire escape. Don't forget the line on the roof protecting the exposure.
Hopefully this can clear up any confusion.

As someone who doesn't know jack about firefighting, I appreciate the explanation in the description. I figured they must have been encountering unexpected challenges, but it's helpful to have them laid out. Thanks!
If they knew pretty quickly that they could not get into the fire apartment, why didn't they attack the fire from the outside with a ladder truck? You can see in the video a "bucket" was sitting there the whole time. Then once they made entry, shut off the exterior attack. That fire burned for quite some time when they could have had water on it.
@@trvman1 fire was initially out of reach from the truck company. As you can see it took awhile for the smoke to start pushing from the front and by the time flames were pouring out, the door was almost opened
@@trvman1 the door to fire apt. was reported to be partially breached.. using water from the outside would have pushed the fire right into the fire floor and possibly injuring both the forceable entry team and the engine team.

Tough push into the fire apartment and tremendous patience on the bosses letting them get it done . Well done FDNY
Its these apartments in general. Probably been furnished and remodeled several dozen times, old wiring and new wiring and abandoned wiring in drop down roofs, hideaway cubby holes, and rooms that didn't exist. Combine that with a hoarder and you end up with a big angry fire hiding in a place you cannot access. Hats off to FDNY for working through a dynamic situation like this. And kudos to the media guy for shooting good footage

I was never a fireman, but I was an EMT back in the mid 80s in Northern Indiana. Hammond to be exact. We were back up for a lot of fires for HFD. Much respect for all firefighters. Please stay safe.

Remember people with negative comments this is the same fire department who rushed into the twin towers and lost 343 members. Anything these guys do earns my respect in a big big way. They know what they are doing.

Most of the negative comments are from those who have a background in FF and taking this long is unexeceptable. The fire could've been knocked down within minutes and no lie of the top floor.
9/11 was a shit storm from the beginning. There's no 1 central command, radios going everywhere. It was just a shit storm, nothing you do could help that... God bless our FF's

Fighting a fire is not as simple as just spraying a hose at a building, there is meticulous planning that needs to be done in order to protect the firefighters and the people who live nearby. The firefighters know what they’re doing.

i have more and more respect for fighters--they go into a living hell on earth in their jobs, taken one you know what of a beating-physical and mentally while performing their duty, they save life soooooooooooooo many times, theyre a wonderful brotherhood with all firefighters. They did an awesome job keeping it it contained despite the hardship of limited access to the primary exposure. Lord only knows how combustible those old tenement buildings can be.

Sounds like a hoarder apartment. This is one reason why hoarding is so dangerous, besides being unsanitary. I've had to work on 3 hoarder homes over the last couple of years, you can't possibly imagine it until you see it for yourself live, stuff piled up 5 to 6 feet, barely a path into the bedroom or bathroom. One property I helped out at, I said the 20' dumpster looked a little big for our needs. They told me they were on their 2nd 20' long dumpster load.
There was a fire in Vancouver a few years' back where a hoarder died because his house was so cluttered. Took firefighters two days to get to the body...
I've a hoarder a few houses down the street (Like he has problems opening his own front door). And here in germany (especially oldish ) houses are kinda close to each other. We assume that this is going to be one of the people we get out dead one day because he fell asleep with a cigarrette and one of the probably 30 yr old newspapers will catch fire.

They had their hands full on this one. Nice job to the members of FDNY for getting this fire out quickly it took them (by looking at the time stamps that were put up on the text part of the radio.transmissions) about 2+ hours to get this out & under control. Not bad for the conditions they faced.

Luca Germany has a bunch of volunteer fire depts which take for ever to mobilize because they have to get in a car drive to the fire station while then get dressed and take there time opening the doors instead of pressing a simple button which takes minutes you don't have when responding to a fire which puts life and property at risk also they only send one group of fire trucks to every fire putting more people at risk including firefighters that risk heat exhaustion vs our full time fire depts that can have a 6 man engine company ready with in 52 seconds and out the door and we send more then one group of trucks depending on the fire I like our tactics better also we can vent the roof which allows smoke and heat to escape

Hoarders beware: THIS is what happens when you block your doorway with junk and fill up your home with trash! If you ever have a fire, there's a good chance you'll end up losing everything because the poor firefighters can't get into the damn house!
Hoarders are mentally ill. It's a condition related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Logic doesn't work here.
Same world over, there are fire regs for a reason. Hoarding by sounds of it not being able to get the door open.

God bless them, it's gotta be hard to keep your wits about you in these dangerous situations. So many moving parts, a lot of coordination and team work!
Hats off to the FDNY for getting the job done under difficult circumstances. The one thing I will criticize some of their members (and any other FFs for that matter) for is not using their air packs! I just watched one of South Metro’s videos showing dealing with the LODD and funeral last week for one of their assistant chiefs from cancer directly linked to his job. Please protect yourselves.
One question I had was why didn’t they use either the ladder or tower truck to get the hose line up to fire. Seems like that’d have been a lot faster than a hand over hand rope pull. Either way nicely done.
The priority for the aerial and bucket are rescue and VEIS. Can't have a line occupying either of those if god forbid a member has to bail out and he has no means of egress.

Floor covered in clutter; ugh. I am always telling my family to not leave crap in front of any door. I lived in a townhouse where the end unit burned to the ground & same situation as this where the firewall between units ended a couple of feet below the roof (happens a lot in Toronto with older townhouses). This was definitely a tough fire to battle; thanks for breaking the chatter down.

On thing I notice that's troubling is there's too many guys in the smoke off-air. You'd think after 9-11 FDNY would be leading the "Take No Smoke" initiative. Great job by a true professional group other than that...
It's sad to think that when I used to deliver into NYC decades ago there were areas of the city where the swat teams had to respond to a fire first and secure the rooftops just so these incredible individuals could get in to save lives and get the job done!!! They deserve way more respect than they get!!! Thanks to all of the brave people who risk their lives every day to keep people they don't even know safe!!!

@@azul8811 they have improved immensely over the years, especially since 9/11 but there's still area's of the city where they hate the fire department as much as the police, even though when they need them the NYFD will come no matter what.

Back in the '80s and '90s, didn't the FDNY arrive at the fire scene _before_ the police? So did they wait for the NYPD to secure the rooftops before the FDNY engaged in firefighting operations? That's what I'm asking. Thanks.

From the apparent age of the building, you probably have "real" plaster walls (good) on wood/metal lathing (not good). Preventing the fire from spreading is secondary to putting it out in the fire apartment (which is going to be a total loss anyway). The delay in getting through the door due to the police lock didn't help things.
thought it might have been hoarding conditions i never heard anything about police lock but that there was lots of stuff or door was blocked from inside?
These would date to around 1910 and correct- plaster and lathe walls. Shame to see a hand made sheet metal cornice destroyed by the fire, even if they renovate the building they'll never put a replacement cornice up and the facade will always look stupidly scalped. At best they might stick some crappy fiberglass replica up there but probably not. The lack of the cornice will also hasten mortar deterioration betwenn the bricks up there too.

Coming from a guy whose family is or either was firefighters (not American ones) it amazes me that these men and women wake up every day prepared to run into a burning building and pull people to safety. Mad respect for all firefighters
Great camera work, fascinating audio. I guess those old NY buildings didn't have standpipes. Running a hose up 4 stories via the fire escape is going make for a heavy hose.
A lot of the older tenement buildings in that city are over a hundred years old or older and if they were remodeled they were brought up to the standards of the time periods they were rebuilt in so many probably still don't have stand pipes in them.
@@tedhunter6983 Yah, that's what I figured. Someone commented on putting a half dozen fireman on a fire escape. Adding the weight of a tied off hose isn't gonna help the security factor. Some reason why the City can't require an upgrade to all multi story buildings so that they install standpipes to the roof? Slumlords gonna object, but then they'll have to publicly face the fact that they are money grubbing swine in their lobbying efforts. Fighting the fire from the roof seems to be an often used tactic. Running a hose down the stairs rather than up them would be hugely labor saving when speed is important.
@@walteralter9061 Yeah running a hose line from the roof down to the fire apartment would be a brilliant idea. That way, every fire would be like a cellar fire! The guys would have to push their way down a stairway that would be like a chimney flue.... filled with smoke, heat, and products of combustion...and with limited visibility while doing so. I can't imagine why the FDNY never came up with that idea!
@@azul8811 You are telling me that it is impossible for smoke, heat and the products of combustion to go downwards in a stairwell? I'm thinking that, if the stairwell is not vented, open to the roof, (Don't they vent roofs precisely to clear that smoke and heat from the firefighting spaces?) it is going to reach saturation and all those products are going to push down into that bottom to top stairwell flue. The real issue is visibility and the level of compromise in the stairwell. If the stairwell is uncompromised, then it is usable as an attack platform, from the top or bottom.
I don't know of any buildings that don't have a stairwell that can act as a chimney. You are telling me that having a stairwell door open the width of the hose is going to make matters impossible? So knock the windows out of the floors that are on fire and vent the floor that way, lessen the products of combustion reaching the stairwell.
You are telling me that a hose dropped from a standpipe on the roof down a couple of stories is going to be slower than dragging a hose up 10+ stories? Your cellar analogy is spurious. An apartment cellar has no windows. Fire on a floor has windows that can vent the products of combustion. It depends on what stage the fire is at. If speed is utmost and the involvement is not crazy, then an attack from the roof is an option. Speed is why firefighting begins with red lights and sirens.

Laying a firehose up a stairwell takes time, and this time is saved by having fixed hose outlets already in place. There is also a tendency for heavy wet hoses to slide downward when placed on an incline (such as the incline seen in a stairwell), whereas standpipes do not move. The use of standpipes keeps stairwells clear and is safer for exiting occupants.
Standpipes go in a direct up and down direction rather than looping around the stairwell, greatly reducing the length and thus the loss of water pressure due to friction loss. Additionally, standpipes are rigid and do not kink, which can occur when a firehose is improperly laid on a stairwell.
I realize firefighters know what they're doing and have reasons for doing or not doing certain things at certain times but as a non-fire fighter I still get frustrated sometimes when fire is raging out the windows and nobody is putting water on it.
@@timothymeineke1169 I pretty much figured as much and they are driven by knowledge of how a fire behaves whereas I only have instinct that says put water on it.
@T Louden exactly! Heat from a fire is bearable to a certain temperature, but steam just goes right through your clothes and burns you...

I think they did a great job putting the fire out once they gained access to the fire. Looks like they had to let the fire come to them because of the debris preventing them from opening a door. Great job guys.

I watch this video and can't help to stop thinking about the countless people commenting on fdny videos not this one of course but the countless other videos thru out UA-cam on how they have no idea how to fight fires this video is clear example on how good they are fighting fires they darken down this fire by the time video was over they just don't fuck around this was a very labor intensive fire.
The dunning kruger effect.......they know a little, think they know a lot, but are unaware of how much they actually don't know. It happens in all fields.....i have come to the conclusion, generally; you set you expectations low with people and you won't be disappointed.
@@jab7168 I totally agree with your comments, its not easy pulling hose through a building with limited visibility, if any, cramped space a cylinder on your back, your trying to understand what your partner is saying to you through a face mask not to mention the fire and if there is more than one line going through the same door way then it gets even harder because you don't want them to start snagging. Most of what Ff do inside the building is not seen so it does annoy me when I read these comments, I'll try what you do, I'll lower my expectations that way I won't be annoyed by there naive comments.
