- In 1977 a Martu couple - Warri & Yatungka - were escorted in from the Gibson Desert by their friend Mudjon. Forty years before, this desert 'Romeo & Juliet' defied traditional Aboriginal marriage lore to live as exiles in their own country. Around the world the couple became known as the "last of the Nomads". Through the voice of their son - and other family members, witness as the story of Warri, Yatungka & Mudjon is told nearly thirty years on...
Such a remarkable tale of first contact. I'd have been a teenager, listening to Led Zeppelin, chasing girls, and taking skin off elbows & knees on my skateboard when Warri & Yutungka were found. I've had the good fortune to travel through their country, though wish I knew more about this when I did in the late eighties. I've so much respect for these incredibly resourceful, skilful & tough first Australians. This is a tale that needs to be more widely told. A true love story of epic proportions & of cultures colliding. I hope one day, their remains might be laid to rest in country, as they should always have been.
This is beautiful to watch. I’ve been up and down most of Australia, and the landscapes where the old natives were living, even if now there aren’t there anymore, they have this kind of magic, I don’t know how to describe it, you just feel it, you feel they are still there moving with the wind.
For me that was the thing I love the most about Australia, the magic nature has behind the Old People stories and tales, and the pure wilderness with no one around to perturbe it…
A hugely spiritual people closely bonded to the land. My honour to read The Last of the Nomads, and to then find this documentary.

Great video. I was looking for some old footage of Warri & Yatungka that I remember from years ago. They were in the desert and I think it may have been the first contact footage or they had just been found. I can't seem to find it anywhere on youtube which is sad, but this video had some great footage also. I think one of the Les Hiddens videos from the Bush Tucker Man series may have some of the footage I am looking for. I will have to keep looking. Thanks for posting this amazing historical video. I will never know love anywhere as strong as this couple had. I am glad to know they had a long life together.
I’ve seen one you speak of. An yes was a first contact one, if the same it had interviews with them explains hiding from the monster (car) as it chased them throughout looking for them
PLEASE NOTE: It was not "Native Welfare" that took out the expedition to pick up Warri and Yatungka. At Mudjon's request, Stan Gratte OAM organized and led the party that picked up Warri & Yatungka. It is Stan's vehicle and the other members of the party, pictured in the video. He has written a book about his desert trips including the one featured in this video. It is called Home Made Adventures, My Expeditions in the West Australian Bush and Desert.
And we say life's hard now.to live in those lands is hard but nature she watches her children

wow learned alot sad story glad he found his parents still alive but on the other hand finding them exposed them to all kinds of sickness it a no win either way so much we could learn from them
It's a hard life ...if they had the support of a tribe out there they might be lasted a bit longer but life expectancy is low living this way ...
