My father served at Alki Point Light Station in Seattle WA., the head Light Keeper was Albert Anderson, he served when it was the US Light House Service, before the Coast Guard took it over. He served for some time out at Tillamook Rock Light, I remember him telling us about how he had to clear rocks from the platform around the light after big storms. The waves would throw rocks from the bottom clear up to the light. BTW, the first man to step foot on Tillamook Rock to survey for the light, slipped, fell into the ocean and drowned.

Picnic spot for the sea lions! Good to see that someone or something is using the rock and it's not all alone by itself! There's life on it, it has stories to tell! 😊

They were definitely unhappy with me! There were literally hundreds of them on that rock!

One thing is for sure, you are a brave soul. Stationed at Tillamook Bay Coast Guard Station, it’s very rare to have that flat of seas

Thanks Scott. Definitely had a lucky day out there. I was in the water before 6am so the swell and winds hadn't picked up, but by 10am it was a mess out there. This was a quick "get in, get out" mission, but it worked out!

One of the builders of that place died when trying to get from land to a boat waiting for him to pick him up just due to the swell and that was on a fairly calm day. I have heard of people paddling out there then anchoring and then swimming to the island but you won't find videos of those explorations since by all accounts the owner is much nastier than the sea lions and very possessive of current information on it. It's understandable since she bought it in 1980 and has been unable to get rid of it and is close to 80 years old now.
I very much doubt any human remains have survived there, the most recent article in the paper dated 2023 says the sea lions forced open the door and destroyed the rack that held the 30 urns in there. The owner used volunteer labor in the most recent access of the lighthouse and I'd bet she had all of them sign NDAs on what they saw inside, but they blabbed plenty to the reporter afterwards although everything they said regarding the state of the urns was redacted out of the article. But enough slipped past that it's pretty clear the state of it now. My guess is one of the reasons she sent people out there was to seal the door since a drone operator could easily survey the interior with the door forced, and State of Oregon cemetery board would be quite interested in the state of the remains there now.

this checks out, I just saw another video about someone who was apart of a "restoration" effort and based on what the comments said they only secured the door and did not film inside for respect. I would imagine as you said the owner refused for them to film inside.

Such a fascinating place! The seas were calm that day. I imagine if there haven't been a thousand sealions there you could have explored the old light house. I understand there is some remains up there as it was for a short time a columbarium. Great video.

Would love to get some photos of this place on foot, with no sea lions present is it possible?

    • @-Stephen-
      @-Stephen-  3 роки тому +3

I think in the winter the rock has far fewer sea lions, though the ocean is much less predicable and more turbulent at that time. I'm sure you could find a window and get the best of both worlds, but it's a riskier push.

      And very much illegal.

    • @-Stephen-
      @-Stephen-  3 роки тому +3

@@GeistView I think it would be trespassing, since it’s private property. I’m not sure about Oregon law, but trespassing is generally a civil issue rather than criminal. Maybe the district attorneys have less to do in Oregon and they prosecute trespassing claims. Regardless, I’d be more scared of the ocean and antibiotic resistant sea lion bites than prosecution. Tilly tends to discourage visitors in her own way.

The lighthouse is separate from the rock its on. The rock is a protected marine sanctuary. Both are illegal to step foot on.

    • @-Stephen-
      @-Stephen-  2 роки тому +2

It varies. It’s always a risk, but in the early morning during the summer months you have the best chance of calm seas.

    • @jeremynkelley
      @jeremynkelley 11 місяців тому +1

Calm is rare. You’re correct. This guy must have really been checking weather forecasts and slipped in at the right time. Even then rogue waves can still come out of nowhere. Getting on rocks (even if they’re sea lion free) can be incredibly sketchy even on a day like this.
