hey morley, about the audio problem, I was wearing headphones while watching and didn't even notice there was a problem until you mentioned it in the video, so I think you nailed it :D
I hope you guys are having the time of your lives living and traveling the way you are. Stay safe (cat stevens " a lot of nice things turn bad out there")...👍✌🖖🥃
This video is super cool and pretty helpful as I’m planning a trip around the world in a Land Rover Defender and 3D printing is essential to my job as a freelance electronic engineer. ( good girls !!!).
That’s awesome!! Yeah it’s definitely doable - I think the main limitation is how it affects print quality over time. But if you’re just prototyping, I think it has a ton of potential.
6:28 Inlay a few neodymium magnets into the inside of the drawers, (as well as the cabinets.) And magnets with the accompanying polarity on the opposite side, of course.
Get a self leveling board and add antivibration pad installed on your printer shelf then place printer which will keep it level while driving as best as possible and the vibration pad will help always. Just a suggestion. Oh a suspension lift on the van will be a game changer for driving and for sure printing!!
I'm doing a Morley video binge right now and loving it (thus the 5 months behind comment 😂) but if you want to try 3D printing on a boat for real, get in touch with Sailing La Vagabonde. I of course don't know them in person but have watched their channel for 5+ years and they give off similar 'adventure-forward + positive-energy' vibes and live full time on a sailing vessel they custom designed for trying to be fully electric (they got close 😅). I bet Riley would love the test of his electrical system to see if he could 3d print. And Elayna would get behind a few niche fixes I'm sure too. 😊 Anyway. Enjoying your videos. Just dropping a thought. Keep spreading such positive energy and fun ideas!!
Someone asked about this a while back on 3D Printing Stack Exchange and I worked out for them that the forces experienced are minuscule (and thus irrelevant to quality) compared to those involved in actually printing.
If you ever find your self staying in Arizona for a little during the van life we have a pretty cool makerspace that could use some attention from someone as cool as you!
Do you ever worry about fumes from 3D printing? Your channel inspires me but I live in a tiny studio apartment and am wondering if it requires a high end model to avoid toxic melted plastic fumes in a living space
In general, filament printers fumes are not a big problem, opening a window would be enough. Resin printing is another world, resin fumes are toxic and an air extractor may be needed
Hello guys, hope all is well out on the roads. The drawers and cabinets in Sweden, we have magnetic locks that we use so that they don't go up, look at them would probably work well, there are different versions so one should work for your use. Sincerely, Philip A
I had a course in college and on the first day the instructor told us, "we were going to make something out of nothing". Learning how to do that, made me a success in life.
Random tip from a semi-professional drone pilot, Whenever you approach a drone or have a drone approach you to grab it out of the air, point it away from you. The person who taught me to fly said this: Our body's natural instinct if something goes wrong eg. a gust of wind, is to go forward. I usually put my hand flat under the drone then do the normal landing sequence. Although tilting it does work, there is a moment of stress on the motors, and you also risk cutting yourself, and getting cut by drone propellors is not fun
Good Girls. Are y'all getting bored now that the van is (mostly) done? It's okay. You can tell us. There's no need to get on a boat with a 3D printer. At this rate a video which is sponsored by betterhelp is only an upload away. (I'm joking, this is great content, incredible to see what that thing could handle, and you definitely deserve a Bamboo sponsorship for this one)
@@MorleyKert Rollercoaster, you say 🤔. Fits the theme of the video. I can live with that 😁. I've been faithfully watching since I discovered you a couple of months ago so as long as you keep doing what you're doing I'll be here.
Another thing which just struck when you mentioned Apollo 13. How does it work in a zero gravity environment? That probably something you won't be able to replicate, but would be cool to know.

Bambu printers have AC powered bed... and it is exactly the same bed in USA (110V) and Europe (230V). In USA this takes about 300W for initial heating. In EU initial heating easily jumps to 1000W! I wonder... if someone did 230V van system. Would it be able to deliver 1kW for 1-2 minutes and don't discharge too much? Also Maker's muse did interesting printing testing of non stable printer. Hanging on a single rope for example...
There is a 3d printer on the International Space Station. NASA designed a ratcheting wrench and emailed it to them. Since NASA is owned by the American people, everything they do is open source, so you can download the stl and print one of your own. It does not have a reverse switch, so if you need to remove a bolt, you have to mirror the file and print a second one.
@MorleyKert I printed it when I first got into 3d printing 10 years ago. It was pretty cool that it printed in place. I'm sure they have other important things, but I have not gone back since then.
@@MorleyKertYou can use Marine Slam Latches or Push Button Latches. Idea for a new video :D Or you make gridfinity with boxes so things inside don't move.
Hmm maybe it's a good idea to add a time-lapse/monitoring camera inside the printer so you can stay seated while doing experiments like this 😂 Very cool tests anyhow!
Ik my comment is late but there are ALOT of factors you did not include: 1: wash the buildplate between each print to get the same adhesion, if you forgot to wash it atleast place it on a different place on the bed 2:The temperature in the ocean might have impacted the bed temperature letting the benchy peel off 3: the humidity might have affected it too
are you at the vanlife fest in Baja? If you see my brother in law (Evan), and his partner (Natasha) wish her a happy birthday today :). His hair is almost identical to yours, just dirty blonde. Cheers
That's not how you use a traction board. You have to sort of dig under the tyre to be able to push the board under the tyre, not front of it. Btw, I love your content!
Brooo, that printer is such a Warrior man, honestly, I think the failure that happened in the boat might've not been related to the movement of the boat, or at least not entirely, I think it was due to the lack of heat, you can see a lot of wind flowing around you cooling it off too quickly perhaps, so much so that it couldn't stick properly from one filament to the other, that, added to the wavy cruise, could be the reason. I'm thinking 90%wind, 10% movement, anyways, these bambu guys should be paying you for running these experiments and marketing stunts for them, just saying.
I’ve gotta admit… I’m from Utah… we have so many dirt roads that you just know how to drive them from when you first get your permit. Watching this is kinda funny, cause Utahns would just floor it through the entire dirt road in a cute sedan while jamming to music 😂 22:15
Most of the stuff you print are functional prints and so this is entirely useable. Not only can you take 3D printed repairs on tour but you could also sell prints online and just post them when you get to another town... Obviously buyers should expect delays in shipping.
It would be interesting to see if you can 3D print in 0 gravity. What kind of gravity does Mars have. Could they print parts for their broken helicopter? The only problem there is there is nobody there to install the parts.
That’s a good idea! I think the 3D printer could operate fine, but I wonder if there would be some weird, unexpected flow of the molten plastic at the microscopic level.
So your $2000 dollar Canadian 3D Printer did pretty good. But in all honesty, how many of us have that kind of printer. I can guarantee an Ender 3 or some other average printer would have failed on the road tests.
Are you venting the fumes out the van somehow? Not clear from this video. Be wary of printing in an enclosed space, especially with innocent animals onboard. Even PLA fumes can be harmful, contrary to popular belief.
