Regardless of if you like them or not, 1D broke into America in a case of simply the right place at the right time. Breaking into America seems to be the key to getting famous everywhere. McFly tried to early in their careers but it was when "boy bands" (I use that loosely as I don't consider them one but they were looked at as one for a while) were going out of style in the states, unfortunately. I think that really discouraged them from trying to gain some traction here ever again.
Because UA-cam was around for one direction since their beginning, mcfly started in 2004 so they had about 8 years of having to work for hits rather than just viral vids
I remember that I watched this like 1 year ago and I got really bored because I did not know any of their songs and now I am really obsessed with them and I am happy about that :)
