  • NEW Cobra 29 LX Channel Modification
    I discover that the Cobra 29 LX I was asked to do a channel modification on is a new variant, so I show how I do the channel modification on the new 29 LX whilst I figure out the differences and what is the same with the original version of the Cobra 29 LX.
    I really appreciate the donations and support I get from my Patreon Supporters and UA-cam Members, donations really do help me to make content for the channel and buy broken test gear, this hobby gets expensive !: defs.link/?u=f...

    Wouldnt it be better to use flexible cable for the ground connection? The mod board looks like it may vibrate when the device is used in a vehicle.

    Nice to see care taken over somebody else's equipment, especially when new........soft cloth down underneath.

    Is there a link for the boards ?
    And is it capable of adding extra bands on this model ?
    Excellent video!

      Yes they can handle two bands just fine, three is pushing it a bit without doing other mods to try and broadband it. Boards are not available, these use a custom oscillator module that I had made just for these 29 series radios.

    I've done the mod for putting the right channel and frequency on the display, if you are interested im happy to help you code that into an esp32 Arduino.
    Im really surprised to see they redesigned the pcb and kept that crap old pll chip, very disappointing, i was hoping for a serial pll without the masked channels.
    See my channel for info on the mod i did.

    RF stuff has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I've got an old Yaesu FT-101E that won't receive and the service manual is like 200 pages. I'm hoping I can make use of my sig gen to troubleshoot it... something I need to get back into, only had it for about a year now!

      RX issues, track down using the I.F. , Probe the IF path to see if you can hear the audio, if not then look before that in the RF amp chain and AGC system, if there is audio then check the audio amp system.

    I was wondering what the mod was!!
    US to NZ channels. At 0:25???
    Is 50mA idle current good for automotive applications, I'd have an external switch for it.
    Neat mod..

    Is there any way to turn down the 4 watt dead key on this radio? Plz help.

    So, you didn't add channels, you just changed the frequencies used for the bank of channels?
    Thanks for the video.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  6 місяців тому +1

      Correct, if I did it slightly differently I could have retained the original band too, but that wasn’t what was asked for.

      Add a switch to choose between normal and ab-normal. 😂

    "It looks to be brand new, still got the peel on the screen" :)
    I don't consider that to be verification of whether something looks "brand new", haven't for years.
    If you were to take a walk through my house, you would probably consider everything to look brand new if the 'peel' still being on the screen was one of the reasons.
    I get no satisfaction from removing the thing, so I tend to just leave it on all my devices. I have devices that are years old still with the original peel on it.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  6 місяців тому

      I was told by the owner that it was brand new and just imported into the country, which is the basis of the comment, but yes, I agree with your statement, I too tend to leave the peel on things to help protect them (I sometimes video doing a screen peel, but I usually put it back on after)

    6:15 SCL and SDA is an I2C bus, not SPI !

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  6 місяців тому

      But it also has Chip Select and Reset, which is SPI, I didn’t end up probing it so it will remain a mystery LOL.

      In this radio those lines are used for multiple sections. The EEPROM is I2C but the LCD uses them as well along with another line for CS and a fourth for data/addess (rs) select.
