    When I was at school, the entire place was a Faraday Cages, because it was refurbished from an old bomb shelter. Nobody, and I mean nobody could get a signal unless you were outside.

    I live in a Faraday Cage. there are 2 to 3 layers of foil backed foam insulation over my entire house and the seams and corners are mostly taped also. When my parents built the house we had to take 2 screens off the windows facing the cell towers for cellphones to work inside the house.

    Back in the (mainframe) days, a data center was built at an air force base in the state where I live. Unfortunately, when they activated it, the (large) disk drives would periodically have voltage spikes and drops causing problems. It was discovered that the ground control radar for the airplanes periodically swept the building in its circular sweep. The initial and temporary solution was to wrap the building in chicken wire which seemed to work until a more permanent solution could be implemented.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 6 років тому +1

      h7opolo, "electric fields push charges away from them." Uhm, depends on the charges and more importantly on the fields. Linus also didn't just misspeak, the animation shows a vertically changing field exerting a static force in the horizontal direction of the wave's propagation. What's that supposed to be, radiation pressure? Also, no word on the fact that EM waves need a minimum frequency for a given Faraday cage to work on them, which is especially important in case the whole explanation was meant to look at a static case.

    • @h7opolo
      @h7opolo 6 років тому

      He did state that the electric field was moving in a negative to positive direction which repels positive charges, so your first point is moot.
      For your second point, would the animation be more correct if the arrows and field lines pointed up and down instead of left and right?

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 6 років тому

      h7opolo, maybe you should watch the video again. He not only doesn't say what you're saying there, he also said that electrons are drawn towards the signal source. That's total BS. And even if he'd said what you're saying, it _still_ be wrong by 90 degrees.
      Sorry, but I can really find nothing redeeming about this explanation. The animation seems to mimick the one from Wikipedia, only that that one's not wrong. So go to Wikipedia everyone instead of watching this video.

    Another way to think about this is the cage acting as an antenna. The antenna is driven by the incoming signal and emits a signal 180 deg out of phase into the cage and in phase back at the source reflecting the signal back like a mirror.
    A lot of lower level physics textbooks actually get this wrong and describe the process as the free electrons in the metal moving and then having their energy dissipated by resistance.

      Tyler Lazenby das right, also u wont be able to use wifi or bluetooth

    • @_Doskii
      @_Doskii 6 років тому +3

      I just tried this (you made me curious) and it turns out that when I put my phone (oneplus two) in my microwave the wifi signal was immediately gone and my usually stable and highspeed 4g turned into a very slow 3g connection (my provider doesn't support 2g/gsm/etc). I was still able to use the internet though (I used teamviewer to test the connection). I also tried calling myself from a different phone and it went though without a problem. The position seemed to matter, when I put the phone closer to the door it managed to keep a very weak wifi signal. So either microwaves only block certain waves or my microwave is leaking and slowly turning me into popcorn.

    • @The1file1
      @The1file1 6 років тому +1

      Doskii it all depends on frequency of the signal. Faraday cage can block up to some frequency. Basic equation is width of gaps in faraday cage is equal to half of the longitude of wave from wich you can get limiting frequency by dividing speed of light with measured longitude. So to conclude ideal faraday cage would have no gaps (like elevator) so it would block EM waves on all frequencies.

    • @vnyggi621
      @vnyggi621 6 років тому +1

      Doskii the microwave only blocks microwaves because it wants to keep its microwaves inside to cook your food

  • @joshuacook2
    @joshuacook2 6 років тому

    That is not how a Faraday cage works.
    Radio signals are not just electric fields (though if they were, your explanation would be corrected). They are electromagnetic waves. The Faraday cage cancels out the electric part of the wave, by moving electrons through it's conductive material, and without the electric part of the wave, the wave stops. You were pretty close I suppose.

    My forward thought is that the wave will pass through based on the magnitude of the sound wave, not the frequency.

    0:45 that explanation is wrong, that explains how they work in electrostatics regime. What actually happens is that the electric field oscilates (due to the nature of the electromagnetic radiation itself), generating oscillating currents inside the conductor, witch dissipates energy by Joule effect.

    Hi Linus,
    I live in a condominium and I see anywhere form 15 to 20 Wi-Fi signals coming into my home. All of which are competing/searching for open channels. This is happening both on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
    Needless to say, wifi performance is significantly hindered as soon as I walk away from my SOHO router.
    Since I live on the top floor, I thought I would tare the flooring and install a wire mesh, like a carpet, before reinstalling the whole thing.
    What do you think of my idea? Do you think it would work?

    I have a question. I get that the Farady keeps electricty from getting to the inside or to the outside of the cage depending on where it originates from. But does the em field change shape to the extent that something powerful enough might not send electricity outside of the cage, but it still might bend space? And vice versa?

    So cage made of net with spaces smaller than wave length, which means about 1foot (30cm) for blocking cellular network, right?

      I have been sleeping a a Faraday Cage for 2+ years. I can tell you, that when I wake up..... I feel relaxed and get a lot of Energy. I also only sleep 4+ Hours per day. Although I try to get my 8 Hours daily, but somehow I get so much Energy, I only need about 4+ Hours. NOTE: I have a video in my Channel about my Faraday Cage. If you can't find it, you can easily search on UA-cam Search Term: Jordan Bronson Faraday Cage

    The biggest problem with contactless cards at least here isn't the threat of identity theft but that they can be charged without entering a pin, this allows people to steal money by charging cards in peoples pocket.

    SCP-055 is contained with a Faraday cage, so that's why I'm here.

    A faraday cage that is not grounded is a antenna! And all tinfoilheads do not shield, they amplify! *mindblown*

    I feel like they found the KFC tent and made a video for the punchline. Almost like a bad Saturday night live skit... I guess bad is implied when I said Saturday night live.

    If you enter a store with a metal lined steal bag the owner gets a vibrating signal on his pager.
    So he knows if there is a thieving guild in his store.

    I have a friend that keeps duplicates of all his electronics in faraday cages. Two laptops, two smartphones, two tv's, etc. Kinda shitbat crazy if you ask me.

      It's too protect against EMPs (electro magnetic pulse) which can come from a nuke or the son and considering nassa has said we are over due for the next one while I will say is is a little over prepared in a sense he isn't that crazy

    • @BiscuitFever
      @BiscuitFever 6 років тому +23

      Yeah, a Faraday cage isn't going to protect against an EMP. You basically need a lead box to do that.

      no you don't, a Faraday cage will work.

    • @DvDick
      @DvDick 6 років тому +1

      En oK It really depends on the kind of EMP, if a nuke goes out near you then even a good Faraday Cage won't do it because there will be also X-rays and gamma radiation that can easily get through it unless it's veery thick
