I really enjoy watching your repairs videos. This video was very informative as I had already replaced 2 of the 3 Welch Plugs on my 1.8L Fox and now the 3rd is starting to leak. Removing the drive shaft is a great idea, thank you very much.

It is always advised to replace all 3 at the back of the block at once, Mervin, but to each his own, thanks for supporting my channel, it is much appreciated.

Just abit of advice if the old one has silicone on take a 27mm socket tap the old welsh plug in abit to break that silicone seal and when installing new one use the same 27 socket to slightly tap it past flush.

I've one welsh plug leaking, going to replace all 3. How much more or less would a mechanic charge for the whole job?

Thanks for your visit and support, Anthea, I usually charge R2500, due to the difficulty of the job, and the confined space within to work.

Hello Bester, some suppliers sell a badly milled welsch plug that does not always fit correctly, try buying from a different spares shop.

I replaced one on my golf 3...but its leaking on the side...it doesn't seem to be getting better so I'm thinking of replacing it again..
Is it possible that I might of damaged the block while removing it because I did it on the side of the road...it was bad..
Any advice on installing the second one?

Hi Uncle, I replaced my Welsh plugs on my golf, but one of them is still dripping. It's fitted and looks exactly like the other two "nice and snug" but unfortunately it's leaking. A drop every second. What advice do you have please?

    • @vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790

Hi Morne, thanks for supporting my channel with your visit and interaction, I get that often after fitting new welsh plugs it normally fixes itself over time with the constant expanding and contracting due to the engine block heating and cooling, but if you want a quick fix, get some ram cooling system sealer, it comes in a small tube and is a powder that looks like gold flakes, it is not expensive and is available at most part stores like Midas, Master parts, Suburban spares, etc. There are also products in liquid form but they are expensive and hardly ever work, Good Luck.

Time for a new water bottle and cap as well, and connect the water level sensor. Due to VW putting the water temp sensor in the water pipe, or on the plastic hose end, those engines can overheat with no temperature warning if the water level is low. Last thing you want on them is a 5 piece head.

Hello oom, what can be the problem if there seems to be a leak above the Welch plugs? I can't see where the leak is but coming from above the Welch plug a small stream of water almost where the cam belt cover is? Also a Citi golf 1.4i 2007 model, any advice will be great thank you.

It depends, if the plugs were replaced before, many mechanics use a sealer, which can make it more difficult to take out, however, from factory, it should come off easier. I had to puncture it the first time I attempted a DIY, but, I did not remove the drive shaft, which is a brilliant idea, thanks Gary. Keep up the great videos, love them.

If you have problems removing them easy,a small sharp chisel on the side of the plug being care not to damage the block, patience is needed doing the job.
