Wow this my best friend Don's Saab. When we were 17 we drove all over Vermont skiing. Saabs also loved by North Country rural mail carriers who had to deliver on unplowed country roads. First FWD till the Tornado came along. The Saab could plow through the highest snow banks with only summer tires. They also had amazing heaters. Great memories, sad GM destroyed the brand and they went defunct.
The original had a 3 cylinder engine 2 cycle in which you added oil to the gas tank. There was also an optional 73hp German made 4 cylinder 4 cycle which we thought was the one to have.
Having owned a Saab back in the 1980's, I would be surprised if this one didn't come back to life with little to no effort. The Saab is truly a remarkable automobile, I enjoyed driving every mile in the two door hatchback I once owned. A testament to just how remarkable the Saab actually is, I bought my 1985 hatchback used from a registered nurse in Florida, she was buying a new Saab convertible. The car had 107,000 miles on the odometer, none of the four tires matched, as they were all made by different manufacturers. I installed two new CV joints, a new clutch plate, four new Perelli Tires, and I drove it, drove it and drove it. This Saab was my favorite car, even after all these years. PS: I never had the chance to meet the nurse who owned my Saab prior to me, but I always wanted to. She obviously loved her Saab, mismatched tires included. This is evident by her buying a second one. Best Wishes to all my fellow Saab lovers. Sonny P ( U.S.A. )
This is in fact my deceased uncle's Saab. So what a coincidence I happened to spot this video. Have went with him numerous times in that car in the seventies...
I have only ever seen one of these Saab cars on the Road here in New Zealand. It was a 1977 model in good condition. It stood out as it was being driven down the street, because of its unusual shape.
I grew up with a newer version of this car. We had a Battleship Gray 1968 SAAB 96 with a Ford built V-4 engine. It was a very well built car and way ahead of its time (especially here in the US). I loved the 4 speed column shifter with its very precise shifting (American column shifters were very sloppy and often got jammed between gears). The “free-wheel” centrifugal clutch release was another great feature on this car, you could lock it out with a lever under the dash. Front wheel drive was quite unusual back then and it made that car great in the snow. The Ford V-4 SAAB used was an excellent engine, FoMoCo should have brought that to the US to use in their cars instead of that in-line 4 cyl they used. Neat car!
Ford almost did build a FWD car for the US, powered by the V-4, but canceled it at the last minute. It did go into production in West Germany as the Ford Taunus 12M. For a fuller back story, see “The Ford Fiesta’s Godfather” by Karl Ludvigsen in the August-October 1977 issue of "Special Interest Autos."
I watched first vid on the earlier 'bullnose' Saab some months ago. This vid came up and I decided to subscribe, because I want to see the progress of these beautifull cars of my childhood.
In 1984, as I passed thru Kota Bharu, Capital Of Kelantan, I saw a maroon colored SAAB. Right Hand Drive, unsure of engine model. They are good, but not really tropicalised like Japanese autos. I sure like to spend retirement in summer and pottering around the yards and the poking around the well preserved structure of the barn, which accounts for the non rust of the SAAB. Restoration is the jewel of my retirement. Congratulations on the find, original keys too. Salud.
I found a very similar looking Auto Union car several years back that had a 3 cylinder DKW 750cc two stroke motor in it. It was in excellent condition much like this Saab is. I knew a guy who drove Saab 60's model cars with the V4 engine and local guy drove an old Sonnet for a long time.
Hi, you have shown us two beautiful old Saabs in apparently EXCELLENT condition, will you be posting further videos if you intend to restore them? Thanks for sharing and best regards from Ireland.
I had the same car but in black and grill was different ws a 1960 I believe. 3 cyl, 2 stroke, total of 7 moving parts in engine. Also had 3 speed column mounted shifter with free wheeling. So if going downhill rpm dropped to idle speed. Weird but very cool little car.
I dont know what all the anti Saab propaganda is about.. especially when its from people who have never owned one. My old man had a 1999 saab 900 the thing was solid. I decided to follow in his footsteps and I purchased a 2010 Saab 93 Aero TTiD4. Such a fine machine it is.
Incredible find! Having given it a wee bath, and looking over it, it would seem that you only need to change out a couple of parts and it should roar into life. This will indeed make a very interesting project. What's great about this is that it seems like it was very well taken care of over its life when in use.
Let's just hope that there's no damage, done to this car; in spite of the fact that it hasn't been outside for a good long time. Did there have to be a drive way, laid out for this old timer Saab 96V4? It however still took a long time, to have it up and running again. ⌛️
Pleasepleaseplease....DON’T RESTORE!!!.....keep her as is.....fix what is necassary....AND DON’T TOUCH THE REST!!.....a restoration....or even worse...a ‘restoration’......would cost in between a fortune....or even more. And rend you a car comparable to any fixed up pile of scrap.....maintain ORIGINALITY by not messing with it!!!!!....there is a fine line between making everything work...which is good!!....and loosing the patina.....which is a loss forever....
Its a cool looking car.....untill you start it...... Just a moped engine?!? Just a Trabant ☝️😃 anyhow nice video. Greetings from the Netherlands everyone ❤️🙏

That engine looks like the Sport model, with 3 carbs instead of 1? If so, pretty rare. What a find and hope it's back on the road soon. There are still a few taking part in classic rallies in the UK, their distinctive "ring-a-ding" engine note and oily exhaust makes them stand out from the crowd. I owned a single carb model for a few years in the early 70s, fantastic to drive and my late uncle had a series of V4s before moving onto 99s and 900s. He said that the German built V4 engine was better than the UK type and they could be told apart by the position of the distributor, one had it at the front of the Vee and the other was at the back, I don't recall which was which, can anyone shed light on the difference?
It's age can't date too far back past the late 60's because it's Left hand drive. I believe Sweden changed from Right hand to Left hand drive in the mid 60's. Unless it was designated for export.
That beautiful SAAB deserves to go a couple more kilometers. Congratulations for your dedication and work. Cheers from Chile, South América!. 👏

Brilliant ! Surprised the wheels revolved, thought the brakes would have stuck on,unless the hand brake was off ! That will clean up well ! Lovely.

I like the fact you didn`t fully air the tired tires, i know they can explode, may explain the ear protection?! lol
Yes, always using ear protection when I air tires, they can explode.
Grymt fin!

Wow. Great. Wonderful ....
