Monza is the unstoppable revenge force. She is quite layered but the fact she is written like a force gets you to appreciate how she affects the other characters. Shivers is meant to be the one you are most invested in and watch as Monza’s actions changes him more and more… and more… Also the plot is simple but even tho u see some of the subversions the amount it escalates too is way bigger than I first realised. And the book has the best duel scene I’ve ever read. Those among many reasons is why bsc is my fav of the first law books out of all of them, and there are many other reasons!
the most boring book i ever read. she's unstoppable because the writer wrote it so. literally every single character and event was forced and written so that she gets exactly what she wants. the end. how the heck does this come even close to the level of the first law trilogy to you is truly unfathomable
The part where Costa and his 1000 Swords guys look at a map and go "hmmm" and *taps lip thoughtfully* and *grunt* for a full page was so incredibly silly that I actually loved it. The book is long though and feels it at certain points. It's written in a such a cheesy and silly way that when the ultraviolence hits it's very abrasive. I'm having fun with it though. I'm 3/4 done and listening to the audiobook has been very satisfying. Steven Pacey is really incredible.
I guess Jake missed the part where Ganmark is ambidextrous lol. That's why he switched his hands. He can take on Monza with either hand. I actually loved the scene with Ganmark and Monza. The dialogue was fantastic.
Moorveer was fantastic in that in a world full of violence-prone people, he will gladly do unspeakably bad things without batting an eye. His world outlooks are so different and chilling. He was also a great contradiction - weak yet powerful, caring yet psychopathic. Boastful and arrogant. And like Glokta, you find yourself sometimes rooting for a truly terrible person (ala Dexter).
Totally agree. I also love how you think he's just arrogant and everything but then you slowly find out how many people in his life he poisoned and it's so dark yet somehow still a little funny...
I love this. I love hearing multiple opinions on books so I think it was so cool that you had this liveshow with all differing opinions. I liked BSC but I didn't like it as much as the trilogy. I am actually about to start The Heroes, which I am nervous for, but this got me really hyped to get back to Abercrombie books. I love his books but military fantasy isn't my favorite =D
Ohhh I'll be eagerly awaiting your opinion on the Heroes then. I'm the same way...military fantasy does nothing for me, but I sort of want to keep reading because of how his books are all interconnected
finished it recently as well, really enjoyed the discussion, i agree 100% re someone dying then not dying and the whole scene with the statue annoyed me as well, i think i landed somewhere similar to you and Jimmy, i thought it was ok, but i had such high expectations from the hype that i was disappointed overall, i still want to continue the series so i guess the heroes is next for me :-)

After finally getting around to reading this and feeling very meh about all but the first 20% and last 10%, this was a great discussion to listen to and help me process my thoughts. I actually felt pretty middle of the road about the original trilogy and didn't know if I'd ever pickup another Abercrombie, but then decided to start the Age of Madness trilogy on a whim and LOVED A Little Hatred. That made me want to try the standalones while I waited for the next book at the library. I don't regret picking it up, but it didn't work nearly as well as A Little Hatred. Now I'm a bit worried about the other standalones. Haha
It sounds like we have similar first law tastes. I LOVED the Heroes. But so far nothing has beat age of madness. I’ve read the first two and they are both incredible.
@@Bookborn haha yes. Though you were much more positive on the first trilogy than I was. I don't think I had the right expectations for it at all. Haha. I can't wait to continue the Age of Madness. My library has an 8 week wait time right now and it's killing me!
I know I’m so super late, but I don’t understand the reasoning in including someone that DNF’d the book 😭 love the content btw, making my way through past and present content steadily ❤
Not my favourite First Law book but definitely Top 3 for me. Weirdly I don't miss magic when it's gone/missing, unless its crucial. Red Country is my least favourite First Law book I've read so far (it's still amazing tho) but i don't think Shy South is an interesting protagonist, by Abercrombie standards. Her short story in Sharp Ends did make me appreciate her more though.
Great discussion! Please enforce the “no referencing future books in the same universe” rule next time though 😅. At one point someone, referring to the Age of Madness, said something like “…and this isn’t a spoiler, it’s just the main premise of the book.” Straight to jail.
I'm for sure going to read the other books and it would be super fun to do this for them! But it only depends if I can find people who feel all different ways about them 😂 I'm guessing Heroes I could because I know people are divided on the fact it's about a three-day battle (Heroes is that one, right?)
@@thefantasynuttwork that came out so creepy specially with the glokta sound effect. I been recommending this to my close friends and i browse for reviews that matches their personality for a more appealing best chance that they might read it. I think Heroes would have been a better jumping off point for the movies because it introduces nearly all the Characters of both the Northmen and the Union and you get to see both sides and never really no who to root for (think Captain America Civil war but much better)
Just finished the book. Yep it's not as good as the first law trilogy but it's still a great read. 👍 And reading it just after the trilogy enhances the whole experience. 👍
Does this have any spoilers ? This year I have completed WoT (I didn’t like Sanderson’s writing). Have to get started on Abercrombie’s Little Hatred. When is this Best served cold ?
@@bhargavapothakamuri4218 It's between the two trilogies. The first trilogy -> best served cold -> the heroes -> red country -> sharp ends (short story collection) -> a little hatred -> the trouble with peace
Hahaha! It's so funny that nobody remembered or cared about Shenkt even though he was the one who closed all the plot threads at the end. I forget that he exists everytime his POV is over until another of his POV starts. Such an underwhelming ending. I didnot care about Monza and really hoped Shivers kills her. She is too good of a person for me to like by the end, even releasing Shivers. I started BSC just immediately after Last Argument of Kings, because that book was soo good. I guess I just wanted more of Steven Pacey's voice,it makes the book so much better. Now I will take a break before The Heroes and Age of Madness trilogy. I felt so awkward about comparing Sanderson and Abercrombie😅. Both are so different and I can't rank them at all. Both fanbases are reaching similiar levels of intolerance for criticism on Reddit tho. Great discussion! After finishing the book and being disappointed, all I see are rave reviews on Goodreads,UA-cam and Reddit. This video explained a few things and made me like it a bit more in retrospect. Thank You!
Honestly why are we supposed to listen to this jake guy who couldn't even be bothered finishing the book before coming onto a show about it. 25 mins in and he is continually butting in and just ruins the discussion.. sorry but its true. He's annoying.
I mean I purposely asked him here *because* he DNF'd it. Knowing he was a huge Abercrombie fan and DNF'd the book was what gave me the idea for this live show. You can learn a lot from someone who's dnf'd, especially if they read half the book (which was at least 200 pages). The point was to showcase a variety of opinions.
