    Art the Clown is in the middle of becoming a modern day horror icon, with the release of Terrifier 3 less than six months away and it's surrounding hype following the massive success of Terrifier 2 pushing this sickly funny killer out of being a niche grindhouse killer into the mainstream. Today, we're taking a look at the first time Art the Clown got his own feature-length film, a passion project from writer/director/editor/makeup artist Damien Leone.

    I've always wondered if Art was just an insane mortal being up until that moment at the very end of the movie. It's possible he's never encountered this other "entity" before that point and blowing his brains out was what lead to him becoming supernatural. Sort of like how Freddy was just a human. It wasn't until after he died that he became a "dream demon".

    I am admittedly a horror and Explotation snob. Some of my favorite slashers are Midnight, The Majorettes, The New York Ripper, Tourist Trap, Just Before Dawn, Don't go in the House, Alone in the Dark, Night Killer, Hunter's Blood, Murder-Rock, high quality and critically acclaimed movies like that. I don't like many modern movies at all. As much as I initially wanted to tell people to watch Blood Harvest, Terror on Tour, Clownhouse (I know the director is a POS) or Funhouse for a clown slasher instead, I enjoyed Terrifier and it passed my incoherent quality test with flying colors. The second was convoluted and long, I didn't hate it, but the first one was one of a half dozen modern horror movies I was throughly impressed with.

  • @falcon048
    @falcon048 4 місяці тому +1

    After decades of watching horror movies and having an affinity for film in general, there is ONE criticism that I absolutely can longer tolerate.
    Story or plot.
    It is beyond ludicrous to say, "There is no story" or "there is no plot." If you can tell any person what the movie was about, then you have successfully explained the "plot" and revealed "the story." Good or bad is subjective to the viewer. You cannot, with good conscience, say that Terrifier is a bad story but wheel around and say Halloween is a good story or Nigntmare on Elm Street is a better story. It's purely subjective. I personally find Terrifier to be a fantastic story. We don't NEED an Art backstory in order to enjoy the film's plot or premise. Art is a force of nature and you are bearing witness to his shenanigans. It is episodic in its construction, as evidenced by the sequels.
    It is my assessment that in order to properly say a movie has a bad story or plot is when it doesn't make any sense, or cannot be explained using any available spoken language; basically it has to be nonsensical...like...oh...like Disney's Fantasia.

    • @RocklinGraves
      @RocklinGraves  4 місяці тому

      Of course it’s subjective…. at no point did I ever or have I ever said that what I’m saying in my videos is some objective truth. I shouldn’t have to explicitly say that it’s my opinion; that’s a given. I also full stop disagree that it’s somehow “ludicrous” to say that Terrifier is next to void in the narrative department. There really is not much going on. It’s very simply Art the Clown stalking and killing on Halloween night. That’s not an objective criticism, because not every movie has to plot focused, but that’s really all that’s going on in this movie, and it’s not weird to point that out. Despite what you’re implying, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street both do have more fleshed out narratives. That’s not to say they’re super deep stories, but Freddy’s history in the town and the context Loomis gives Michael, as well as the way both movies are paced means that they both leave more of a narrative impact in my opinion. I don’t want everything explained and I think being vague often makes things more interesting, but that doesn’t change that I don’t feel like there’s much there in this movie. I also don’t recall saying it’s a “bad story” just that there isn’t much to talk about with plot. Again, not a flat out criticism, but it’s something that does make it less engaging for me. Halloween and Elm Street have simple but effective stories, Terrifier isn’t a whole lot more than a collage of death scenes and an Art the Clown highlight reel. That’s the difference for me

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 4 місяці тому

      I feel like I'm in the middle. The definition of plot is literally just events in a storytelling medium. I think it's fair to say that there's not much narrative in this movie. There's no real structure or arc to this movie, and stuff just happens. Which can be fine with a short film or anthology, for example, Fantasia, but doesn't really work for anything longer than 20 minutes, although there is exceptions.

    • @12368784
      @12368784 День тому

      @@RocklinGravesactually, i would even disagree on calling the Elm Street movies too simply, there are (at least seemingly) enough layers to them to have film theorists and, more interestingly, literature professors and philosophers writing deep analyses about not just the movies and their intrigue but more interestingly about the subplots. One can of course always argue that they will always find something to write about if they twist and turn the movie long enough and who knows, maybe in 5 years we will have essays about art the clown, but as i see it now there will possibly be rather texts about "what does it say about the viewer/society" as with what happened with hostel for example (there was an interesting essay in "dawn of an evil millenium" which made me interested enough to give it a second and third watch)

    As a lifelong horror fan since a little kid in the '70s, I'm really not a gorehound. The goriest faves I have are all old movies. However, what I can enjoy about the over-the-top grue in the Terrifier movies (even though I find myself looking away) is what I perceive as the _intention_ behind it, as if the director is primarily doing these ridiculously gory scenes as a means of thumbing his nose at today's PC culture.

    I kind of like that Terrifier jumps into things with no context. I can’t remember who said this; “no one knows they are the potential victim of a serial killer until it’s too late. But the killer knows”. That basically sums up the first film for me. Although Art behaves extremely creepily, it would be hard to predict the level of violence lurking behind that paint.
    Thankfully, I’m terrified of clowns & think they are all capable of this level of violence. 🤣

    • @jamesarmel

      I totally agree! The "story" in Terrifier 2 is just too long, over the top, and tedious for my taste. I could definitely do without the whole sword and Sienna plot line. I can still enjoy it for everything outside of that, but 2 is more of a slog for me (in contrast to the reviewer). You describe exactly what makes the first film so brilliant. The events are totally random, out of nowhere, and brutal, so have a far greater sense of realism in that respect.

    I loved the way the first terrifier looked, it felt like a slasher classic kin to what we got in the 80's and 90's with movies like Friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street and Halloween 1 & 2. I absolutely love Terrifier and I respect these guys for bringing us a NEW Icon vs trying to cash in on the same old shit, like everyone else is doing. I mean when's the last time we got a NEW anything? This world feels like it just regurgitates dead ideas that's been done a million times over, nobody has the BALLS to innovate and create anymore. They just want to rehash all the shit they know will sell from the successes of the past.
    We need more directors like this and we need more ideas being created. Art is an example of doing this well. It feels like a classic. But its new. I don't think we have gotten a villain as iconic and well put together in YEARS. The fact there is so much mystery around Art is another thing I love. I also love that they are not scared to push the envelope on what we consider disturbing. It makes it feel like there is no line Art wont cross. I think the false protagonist in Terrifier 1 does a good job at making that clear. You think ole girls the plot armored star of the movie and she gets straight up executed half way into the movie.
    I think Terrifier 2 was also good, I don't think its AS good as the first one, but they definitely upped the gore. But the main thing I think it does worse than the first is there IS a clear cut protagonist who defiantly has the plot armor on, but the story kind of needs that to be so. So its not THAT bad, I still enjoyed the shit out of it and really liked sienna character arc but idk it was just more predictable because of that. The second one was way more focused on just being gore porn.
    All hallows eve is probably my favorite depiction of Art. He clearly is a supernatural being. Shrouded with mystery. and it just left me feeling like I wanted to know more about this
    Art guy! He was relentless in all hallows eve. Showing off powers like the ability to teleport himself around. The ability to alter reality. The scene where she gets the call from the girl on the tape, and when she sees art sitting behind her in the TV but hes not there when she turns around. They did such a good job of making art seem like so much more than a man in a costume in this movie. It hooked me.

    I really wanted to love Terrifier, I swear, I truly did want to. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into it. It didn’t suck me in, it didn’t keep my attention and I didn’t enjoy the villain, Art. I don’t think it’s my type of horror. I tried watching it twice to really give it the old college try but it didn’t resonate with me. A movie I did really enjoy though, and I wish you would cover, is Southbound. Did anyone else like that movie? There’s another movie I can’t recall the name of right now but to describe it, it was about a bank and a group of bank robbers. There’s a vault and I guess a past slaughter occurred there? Anyone know the movie I’m referring to?
    Edit: I found the movie, it’s called The Vault.

    i will die on this hill that teriffier is basically the early 2020's version of Evil Dead, im positive the gore back then was treated the same way the gore in these movies are today, plus we got an iconic character (Art) out of it just like evil dead (Ash) plus take the fact that The Evil dead was just epilogue to what they could do with the series which becomes clear with evil dead 2 (ignore the studio bullshit they pulled with evil dead and the sequel) its most likely why im so in love with Art hes one of those underground and judged characters that im sure was the same for evil dead back then

    Neither Terrifier is good…but, the first movie is far better than the 2nd. People praise the 2nd one for having a proper story, but…its story literally is nonsense, lmao. It truely doesn’t fit together or make any sense. They keep doing all these things in the story about how the father I guess knew about Art, but like…how? We literally don’t learn anything about that by the end of the movie. The actors all are pretty bad as well. ESPECIALLY the lead actress. I think they’d have been better having the bedroom actress be the lead. Then comes the worst part about the 2nd one…THE LENGTH. Holy hell, it being over two hours is utter insanity. No slasher should be over 2 hours, especially one with no real story. Did we really need the clown cafe scene? Did we really need so much of the party scene? The movie dragged more than any other horror movie I’ve ever seen. Cut it down by 40 minutes and I think I’d appreciate it more. Atleast the 1st movie is short and to the point. It knows it’s just there for the gore. That’s why I can watch the first movie once in a while, but the 2nd is just god awful to sit through. I really love the actor who plays Art. I think he’s incredible and deserves more work in a better movie.

    Oh yeah that was the first time I saw art was Hallows eve❤. I feel like it should have been a hit because honestly it wasn't a fucking reboot it feels like a Adaptation to theme similar to tales from the crypt or creepshow but a good version.
    Even if people didn't like it at least it wasn't some stupid lazy ass reboot. I feel like that's the thing that directors and TV networks need to understand is that it's fine to redo something but don't just copy and paste. I feel like that's the thing that directors and TV networks need to understand is that it's fine to redo something but don't just copy and paste. Example Adrian Paul Duncan McCloud from Highlander said that he would love to see a Highlander TV show film reboot but if it offers a new extension of the current Highlander universe and not a rehash!! Even back in 2012 There was a confirmation that Ryan Reynolds was gonna be the new Highlander and when he saw the script he left production!! This was around the time that the original actor who played Connor McCloud petitioned against the Highlander film because it was going to ruin the franchise that the original franchise did great on and concluded very well with Highlander the source.

    Am I the only one who isn’t into art the clown? I guess torture porn isn’t my thing, but while the effects are well done and art is well characterized…ish… nothing else in either movie is more than mediocre at best. The writing is sloppy and pretty grating, and it just feels like constant excuses for excess torture. Its not really spooky as much as it is gross. If you want a realllly well done modern villain with genuine tension and some bomb ass action scenes, go watch the invisible man lol. Much better and doesn’t use women as objects for dissection, plus it handled sexual violence, assault, and stalking in a way that terrifier seems too scared to touch.

    I honestly think the only reason All Hallows Eve got any recognition is because of Art the clown. Terrifier is a simple yet brutal movie and everything about it holds up. Unlike Terrifier2, where the entire story about the girl and her dead dad blahblah etc... when she turned into some interdimensional angelic b eing of retribution, I kinda rolled my eyes. A lot of people said how out of left field the second film was and how it added so much to the franchise but honestly, aside from the quirky game show section the entire film is utter crap and I wish Art had murdered that entire family in a 3 minute scene so he could get on with being Art without some higher being being sponsored by the soul of her dead dad just ruined everything in a sequel that should have just been better.
    You got Terrifier all wrong, a slasher doesn't need plot points or teenage girls ascending to heavenly creatures, you missed the mark on this review massively.

    • @RocklinGraves
      @RocklinGraves  4 місяці тому

      The only way for me to “miss the mark” on a video is if I’m not honest with my thoughts about something. It’s fine if you disagree and prefer the first one, it’s fine if you think the second one is bad, but that doesn’t mean that anyone else is “wrong” for disagreeing with you. Slasher movies can be a lot more than just brutal kills, and whether or not you’re drawn to that is gonna be completely subjective, but you’ve got to able to acknowledge the personal preference that comes into this stuff. I love tone, I’m drawn to distinct and iconic characters, and I love wild narratives, so Terrifier 2 is more appealing to me than the first movie which is a much thinner one. The fantasy tone of the second movie was something that I had a lot of fun with and I think it made Art a hell of a lot more interesting, and I think Sienna is the best final girl we’ve had in a long time. I love the second movie being a sort of cosmic test for her abilities, because as silly as that sounds it’s just a lot of fun. My point is though, it’s fine to disagree, but it’s not fine to treat your opinion like it’s the “correct” one and people who don’t agree are just wrong or missing the mark. That’s not healthy for discussion about art in any medium

      "You got Terrifier all wrong, a slasher doesn't need plot points or teenage girls ascending to heavenly creatures, you missed the mark on this review massively."
      Nah, slasher films need plot points, or they are just boring nothings of movies. The best slasher movies have actual arc structure and character development so that you care about the characters. I hate slasher films with no plot, because they are boring. Halloween had a plot, as did Nightmare on Elm Street, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Prowler, and House on Sorority Row. Hell even Friday the 13th part 4 has character arcs. This is just uninformed BS trying to justify why most slasher films suck.
