- I'm really psyched to take you through one my Songbird Garden Design's drought tolerant gardens that was installed almost 3 years ago. Walk with me as I talk about the plants and hardscape that was selected. It’s nice when a larger property has meandering pathways to walk and enjoy the garden from all angles. Great video/plant commentary and birdsong! Felt like I was taking an outdoor break!

How does one create the trail? 😊👍🏾
Hi. Sorry for the delayed response. The trail is made from Decomposed Granite also just called DG. Depending on how much traffic you predict, there are various methods of installation. You will need border material along the perimeters to hold it in place. We used Benderboard which comes in long 20 ft pieces at your favorite hardware store. It should be staked down every 3-5ft depending on the terrain. I don’t recommend DG if the path is sloped. The DG may “run” with heavy rains. Flat services are best.
Unfortunately, my drought tolerant plants all rotted during a normal summer when we had an average summer rainfall.

@@SongbirdGardenDesign I'm in northern Arkansas zone 7b where the humidity is very high. The summers are hot and tropical even when we get sporadic rainfall.
Have many of these plants- but the gophers have been eating the Kangaroo Paws and Phormium off at the ground. Any suggestions on keeping these plants alive?
Hi Kay. Pest control isn’t really my specialty but are you sure it’s Gophers? Gophers usually eat the roots of the plants from under the ground. Kangaroo Paws and Phormium have something in common…They will NOT tolerate poor drainage. Do not let them sit in soggy or soil that is too moist. They should be planted with their root balls mostly showing above ground level and don’t smother them with mulch. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment.
