I think Voiceplay using instrument is like Bob Ross, the American painter, using a putty knife to "paint" landscapes, the end result is all that matters, and it is magnificent.
I loved your reaction to this one.😊 I think in an interview J said he can play a few instruments but he's not proficient in them. Layne is a classically trained violinist and they didn't have anyone play the drums. Just Layne beatboxing. This song always gives me goosebumps!
Glad you enjoyed it! You are definitely not alone in having this song break your brain a little the first time through. It's surprising in so many magnificent ways. I don't think the video is exceptionally experimental for that era. The location shoot was certainly a bigger undertaking than just using one of their usual studio spaces, but they were already doing a fair bit of that around the same time. It was more of a natural growth from what they'd done up to that point. As for instruments the guys play, during a streamed hangout early in quarantine (which is still available under the Live tab on their channel if you want to watch it), they each rattled off at least one or two things they can play to some degree. From my somewhat fuzzy memory: ** Layne has been studying violin since he was little, has picked up some piano for arranging purposes, and learned enough about playing a drum kit to look convincing when he mimes it during his beatboxing solos. (I think they generally credit him as "drums" because he's humble and "vocal percussion" can sound a little snooty, but the sounds he makes are SO much more than just drum noises.) ** Geoff has been playing piano since he was fairly young (10-ish, maybe?) and uses an electronic keyboard for a lot of his arranging, as well as creating backing tracks for his solo stuff. He also knows enough guitar to look reasonable when his hands do air guitar motions. ** Earl played trumpet and french horn in school, but hasn't really kept up with it. That's why he's so good at recreating the sound of brass hits. (Side note, yes, he's a teddy bear, but have you not looked at his physique? He is BUILT. 💪 He tossed that hay bale in Daddy Sang Bass like it was nothing.) ** J.None plays of a bunch of things passably -- violin, guitar, piano, accordion, a couple wind instruments (sax and clarinet, I think?) -- but doesn't consider himself really proficient in any of them. (He just doesn't say that last part when he's auditioning for jobs.) ** Eli is the one I remember the least. I feel like he was kinda quiet that day. I think he said a bit of guitar and maybe piano, too, which would make sense with his rock band background. His creative tech-nerd heart is definitely more focused on audiovisual production stuff now.
DJ, Voice Play as a group are wonderful magicians aren't they? They are so good at lulling us all into suspending our disbelief, Layne is a wizard in his own right by the way he manipulates the sounds in post production. To me it's not much of a stretch seeing Jay playing along with Layne, better yet it wouldn't surprise me at all if he did play the violin. Don't forget that Geoff, Layne and Earl worked/performed for Disney, so they know about performance magic, they are after all, Bards, in the truest sense.
He gets a singing part in their cover of Can't Help Falling in Love! And he's also done songs on his own personal channel where he sings with his family~.
In the part where you weren't sure if it was Layne's violin or Earl, it was both. You can hear Earl matching the violin and blending with it, which creates a lovely effect. No drums, just a guy who swallowed a drum kit. There's some THICC echo effect on Layne's tom fills in that one part. Right in that moment of the video, you can see his mouth making the sounds, although of course it's all pre-recorded. Still, I guess they want to visually show that he's beatboxing AND vioLayne-ing at the same time. The man is just so talented. All of them are. Earl apparently plays French horn and trumpet. (Mad respect, French horn is HARD... I say that as a trombonist who learned F-horn in high school.) Geoff is beautiful on piano and knows guitar. J.None learned violin, he isn't classically trained like Layne is, but still! I don't know if Eli plays an instrument, but it's enough that he's a graphics genius and multi-linguist who speaks Japanese. (And now I want to see them cover an anime opening song. "SASAGEYO SASAGEYO!")
Awesome reaction DJ. That was Layne doing vocal percussion as well as the violin. It was layered because he couldn't do both at the same time. Once for drums and once for violin.
This is the first of their post apocalyptic series. I was unfamiliar with the song and the audio clip I found had been synced to footage from the game League of Legends. It was apparently written for a tournament. It’s a post apocalyptic world and “we are the warriors” are trying to rebuild their society. According to the lyrics they are not getting the respect that they think they deserve.😊 Dream On is said to be the second of the series. Yeah, VP uses instruments rather sparingly, but they always make good use of them when they do. Another example is the pitched percussion instrument they use in Attention. Sooner or later I hope they use Geoff's piano in a VoicePlay song. Icing on the cake would be if one of them played sax, but I don't know if any of them do.
If you watch Earl during that high pitched moment, you can see he's the one doing it 😁 Same with Layne doing that very convincing beat boxing. If you watch his mouth, he is doing his darndest to at least look like he's beatboxing and playing the violin at the same time.

Don't forget that Kevin from Ptx can cellobox, so there's no reason why Layne can't violinbox. See Pentatonix with Lindsay Sterling do Radioactive, also a cover of Imagine Dragons.
The reason would be that it is much more difficult to beatbox with your chin occupied by the violin. You need to be able to open your mouth and put it in various different positions to beat box. Very difficult with a violin in the way. The cello is no where near the chin while being played.

Since you like violin so much, you should react to Pentatonix and Linsey Stirling doing "Over The River". :) It is, other than "The Prayer", their cinematic best, IMO.
Nice reaction, but honestly, I'm kinda getting annoyed by people reacting to these covers without having ever hear the source material. Turn it into a two parter or even put it in the same video. But songs like this and Valhalla Calling you really need to have heard the original to appreciate the arrangement that Voiceplay's done here. And both of those originals are definitely worth a reaction as well. And while I'm sure Layne COULD play the drums, that was all vocal percussion, look at his mouth when he does that breakdown you were questioning ;)

Don't panic! J wasn't really playing the violin - it was all just for effect. This begins their post-apocalyptic saga, comtinuing with Dream On and Seven Nation Army. Layne did not play the drums for this, only vocal percussion. I do have to ask a favor of you. Could you please be conscious of holding your hands over your mouth when you're speaking? I know it's true reaction, and I know it's honest, but it does make it hard to lip read for those of us who find the UA-cam auto-generated captions useless. Thanks!
Since you like violin so much, you should react to Pentatonix and Linsey Stirling doing "Over The River". :) It is, other than "The Prayer", their cinematic best, IMO.
i know you're relaxing in bali. but jonthan young released a metal version of poor unfortunate souls. and i must warn you. you will not survive
Oh we all know that he won’t survive. I just want to know how long it will take before he does. I was in awe afterwards.

Dangit, tisn't fair that I have to wait * looks at clock * nine freaking hours for this. :P I voted for it in the Patreon and am soooo looking forward to it.
