  • The Las Vegas metro area is now home to over 2 million people, and attracts tourists from all over the world, but it all started with one place - known as the birthplace of Las Vegas.
The Old Mormon Fort is located at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue, a location that 19th century settlers handpicked.
“The Mormon missionaries came here in June of 1855,” said retired park Raymond Richardson. “They are the ones who put up the first structure.”
Richardson says the settlers chose the location because of the creek that ran through.
The grounds have been recreated for the current park, but one part of it, hasn’t changed.
In the center of the re-created grounds stand an adobe building, which as the historical marker out front indicates - is the oldest building in Nevada.
“When you go out onto the ground you are going to see parts of the original structure from 1855, you are also going to see parts of the reconstruction of the fort,” Richardson added.
