About the personal experiences - because I grew up in a tiny, remote village in Ukraine, literally none of the images in the video make me feel anything. They are all too different from anything we've built here
for me personally liminal spaces feel far less about nostalgia and much more about dreams, I have had so many dreams in weird unsettlingly empty places and liminal spaces have that exact same feeling, a place that you shouldn't be in, a place that isn't real and does not welcome you, where the laws of the universe start to break down...
Agreed. I’ve had so many dreams in big hotels, weird complexes, uncannily vast bathrooms, trains, planes, airports. The images are reminiscent of dream locations. I get no nostalgic feeling from any liminal space image.
This reminded me of a dream i had once where i somehow got to a hidden floor of a supermarket i used to go to, it was sunny and there were some shelves with food, but i remember i couldnt get out
i honestly want to research how liminal spaces can affect derealization when i go into psychology. derealization is a disorder that usually stems from trauma that the brain is trying to protect you from, so it forces you into a sort of liminal state of mind. i have derealization and have always had intense, deep gut fear reactions of paranoia and flight response when i watch liminal space or backrooms content. ive noticed that a lot of other people who have derealization have similar, more extreme reactions to seeing the content. usually we start to dissociate (a trauma response) or have uncommonly high fear responses. ive also noticed that in traumacore posts, liminal space is used a lot as a setting. traumacore is often used to help cope with trauma, usually childhood trauma, by creating liminal images reminiscent of one's trauma. it can be extremely triggering for some people or helpful for others. i have a theory that liminal spaces affect people who have derealization or another dissociative disorder a lot differently than those without it. i think it might be because it reminds us of our childhood, which for most of us is the source of trauma. certain liminal spaces can trigger memories of that trauma, causing the different reactions we have. i also want to research how people with memory loss interact with liminal spaces. i have amnesia of before i was 10, and pretty vague memories of after. i noticed that i don't get as severe reactions to things that are typically in the younger childhood experience, though its still vaguely there subconsciously. what i can remember has a greater effect. i have a theory that depending on how someone developed memory loss, it changes how they react to liminal spaces. i think people who develop it from drug use, brain injury, or genetic conditions wont have the subconcious reaction while people who developed memory loss because of trauma will have subconscious reactions. this was the ramblings of an aspiring neuropsychologist, thank you
Nailed it. not many other videos can identify everything that makes a liminal space what it is. I think one aspect that adds to the subversion of being devoid of humans is the artificial nature of it. 90's architecture was artificial. Lighting, materials, even fake grass is used in liminal space. the subversion comes when we associate the scene with humans, but the scene doesn't provide any. The darkness also contributes to the contrast with the artificial lighting. There's never any sunlight in liminal spaces, and the one's I have seen are literally a fake sky.
Liminal space photos give me the same feeling that I used to get during that jimmy neutron episode where the characters have to win that alien game show and get sent to a simulated version of the characters town.
I’ve walked through a irl liminal space. There’s a place called Greenacres Mall and it’s always empty, save for the few people that walk through it to get to Guitar Center, TJ Maxx, or even the THUMP gym on the other side. My brother and I walked through it for the hell of it, and I was telling him that this place feels like one of those “Strangely familiar but unnerving images” videos, because it gives off a melancholy feeling. It was cool, I should have taken a picture.
Liminal Spaces have never been unsettling to me. At least not the ones that aren't meant to look obviously creepy. I watch this video and think "hey, I legit wanna hang out with a bunch of friends for a while in this photo". I can't be the only one who thinks this. Had no idea this phenomenon is so recent btw, I could've started the trend ffs.
That’s just it though. You want to bring friends, but the way that most look at liminal space is as if they were alone, because of how vacant the place is. Almost as if taken by the only person left on earth. Add that to the definition that was provided in this video, it can instil a pretty unreal feeling.
I get that too, it's never been unsettling to me (unless meant to be super creepy). I wouldn't want to bring my friends, but I get it. I wish soneone could explain why liminal spaces Don't work a lot.
Easily the best primer on liminal spaces that I have seen on UA-cam. Will save as a reference if I need to explain to someone what a liminal space actually is.
I have a mental condition where I have intense swings of dissociation / de-realization, if you've ever felt that, that is what liminal spaces are to me
I saw my suburban mall slowly dwindle and die during my teen years. It was originally built in the 50's or 60's, and by the time I was old enough to go to school in the late 90's it was still up and running with several stores, bars, restaurants, a pharmacy, hairdressers, a massage spot, a flea market type store, a grocery store, a kiosk etc. But as time went by during elementary school, I saw the first signs of it slowly dying. When I was in year 7-9 the majority of the stores and restaurants and services either moved elsewhere or just stopped their business altogether. A few places hung on to dear life in the building, but by the time I finished upper secondary school, I knew the place was doomed. I had a walk down memory lane in the now very quiet building, taking it in for the last time. There was graffiti and signs of malicious destruction everywhere, and some doors were bolted shut to prevent people from breaking in and entering. A while later, the whole mall was torn to the ground. A new, very modern building was erected on the other side of the street. It doesn't have that same "mall feel", but it is dominated by a big grocery store and a hypermodern library, along with a few other smaller businesses like a driving school and a Subway. Up until recently I was able to see and "walk around" the old mall on Google Street View, but they have now updated the footage so it is gone forever, existing only in my memories. Times have changed a lot.
Always had an irrational fear of closing and empty malls :/ because of nightmares I had as a kid where I'd get stuck inside and be brought to a different dimension or some sort. These were dreams I had at like... 5-10 y/o. wew
The effect is a bit reminiscent to watching certain David Lynch movies. An scene that seems familiar and mundane with a sense of unease and dread lurking underneath.
I dunno if it's a liminal space, but the divine loneliness of a Waffle House off the freeway at 2am, which you hoover down black coffee and hash browns so you don't run off the road, it a unique and strange feeling.
I'm 40 and I feel nostalgia for places that look out of the 70s-90s. I was born in the early 80s but my home and some places I'd go to would've been years long holdovers from the 70s such as shag carpet and knotty wood paneled walls. Those kinda places are familiar yet like a distant memory from my childhood.
We can infer that teens will feel nostalgia for places from the 00 era, where there's gonna be crazier than ever buildings because their design usually mixes as a pastiche elements of the previous decades. But also, they will feel eerie for digital environments as well (! (?
Wait--you think someone in their twenties knows what it's like to go into a Blockbuster, or to go to a roller rink? Or what it's like to work in an old, musty office space? Or to traverse through a metal-based playground? *Really*?
im gonna have to look at this when im older and have been to more places so that the liminal space effect thingy can work great video, whoever isnt subscribed is rude
This is more like my Dreams and what I see when im a baby and Now it happend to me again with my dreams 2 Times now legitimately! Its like someone is luring me in there. And then when I was back like its always the same Always creepy always alone, And I didn't think thru this. Like someone is watching me in the darkness, I felt im not alone... And then when I reach the exit of the school it began to feel no sense because Im like cycling to where I began and it kinda have a Entity on it. I felt something and cold breath someones following me I can't put my finger on it and then suddenly the lights are flickering And then a loud bang on the door That I can hear but I know I need to investigate now when Im now at the door, The door was open in a mysterious Force and then loud screaming Is across the hallway and then something is now Chasing me now I ran to the door where Ive Started and then now. Im at a empty daycare... Its like my memories are coming back one by one and I saw a lighter it was so dark I cant see when I light it I saw a slide an empty looking slide... It was the only interior that I saw unless the chairs and ball pit. And then I got teleported again and now im in a empty gas station a little gas pump and a convinence store, I was really comfused and then I see people or cars walking by but they might not see me I was yelling for help but the others are keep chatting, Its considered that I wad dead but when I was teleported again I was in a dark school hallway again but when I stepped one more its water. So I assume I was in the swimming pool but its soo dark I lit up my torch again and then I saw the door way out when I got closer to the door a hand mysterious grabbed me at the foot I was trying to hold the door handle but they got me. I was now at the real world Im now in my bed I saw my mom and dad sleeping and then Now its 5:48 AM in the morning I cannot sleep anymore I keep remembering my dreams that what happend and now suddenly its now 7:24 AM now we all are now awake and my mom saw me my eyes are keep wide and open and I tell her everything what happend and they just laughed... I saw it in my real eyes But I kept it a secret to my classmates but now im documenting this its real but Im really True 100% but they all laughed so I just forget it but It did it to me again in August 2 and 7 2022 Idk what is the purpose... But why did they bring me back? I know theres always a purpose so If i got bring back I might go to deeper and deeper until I have the anwser If i got that same dream again I might document more in this coments (Signing off)
The picture at 0:22 is a hotel in London I stayed in. It's just as creepy in person. The architecture is baffling. The green space that looks like a courtyard is actually the enclosed roof of the bar below. There is no way out into that space. You can only look down on it from the third floor elevated walkway. You never see the sky, and the windows are all internal.
Jokes on you I don't have a memory! Jokes on you I don't have a memory! Jokes on you I don't have a memory! Jokes on you I don't have a memory! When did I type the others?

Great Video.Yet , I kinda disagree with the statement that most people just start noticing liminal spaces recently.I have notice these spaces majority of my life. It was very strong as a young adult. It has known gain its rightful place in human consciousness and awareness.
Liminal spaces seem like the settings for dreams i remember this one dream.. A long hallway at school, I was trying to run; gravity went all weird... I couldn't get traction and like, slowed down. It was unpleasant. Idk. Liminal spaces all seem like that to me, traps where you just.. exist in existentially :D that, sounds... daffy. it was fun to think though eerie.. I spammed that before I started this, and I was pouring ice water into a hat when the poignancy of the vldeo caught my attention. Now, uh.. Idk. yawn
I can't get why y'all are constantly referring liminal spaces with nostalgia or as a went-like place... To me, liminal space's simply a strange, unnormal and eerie type location... It dosen't gives any similar feeling to of maybe I had been to that place or a similar place at some point in my early life to me at all!!!
My definition of liminal space is "any place where goes well with Earthbound music".
considering that game had rather empty neighborhoods and a mostly empty shopping mall, it makes sense.
omori music goes well with almost anything
Omg yes. Something about Earthbound is the most nostalgic and relaxing game ever. I adore that game
This is an immaculate definition. 👏
Earthbound music has that nostalgic goofy vibe to it, kinda fits!

liminal spaces make me feel nostalgic and sad due to how lonely my childhood was and it makes these photos very bittersweet which is strange.
Why do I remember this video
