  • I saw really good reviews on this skillet. A lot even say it's the best cast iron skillet to date. I just HAD to find out!
    In this video, I give some unboxing impressions and review it. Apologies, this is a long video!
    Made in America, light weight and an overall great size.. however controlling the heat it puts out requires a bit more monitoring needed than the Stargazer in my previous review!

    I hope you make more videos.
    You’re not the first person who has complained about the “sandy“ texture of the Lodge cast iron, but it can actually be an advantage.
    Why? It takes a lot longer to correctly season a Lodge piece of cast iron, but once you have built up the seasoning from your regular cooking, you will get a perfectly glass-like surface inside the skillet, as the texture will capture those bits of oil that you are constantly putting through the process of polymerization. I have lots of pieces of cast iron , both high-end and Lodge. My Field is the least favorite, while my very old Lodge is absolutely stupendous.

    I cook cornbread in my cast iron pans quite a bit. If you heat the pan in the oven at 400 ° for 10 minutes then pour the batter into the pan with melted butter and put it back in for 25 min. It will drop out without any sticking. Make sure you heat the pan in the oven not on the top burner.

    I think the biggest variable between these two very fine “legacy” skillets is the cook. You just need familiarization and that does not come with one egg. My choice was Stargazer, like the handle, struggled with getting a good seasoning because the Lodge Finish grabs seasoning much better and holds it much better too, I have and use both , no issues with either but I understand they are different. For the egg tst, try a carbon steel pan! The flared edge on the skillet means no flipper to turn over and egg, you can’t do it easily with cast iron but carbon steel is made to toss things. Again-it is about understanding the skillet.

    I had both. I like field better. I personally didn’t like the handle or the helper handle of the stargazer. So I gave away. Great pan. Just didn’t like handles. Personally I like Finex and field. I have a Lancaster coming so can’t wait to try that.

    actually 'sandy' or 'porous' finish on the Lodge helps better build up seasoning and keeping it seasoned. When it is super smooth finish, it is harder for the oils to polymerize and adhere to the surface. Of course with time, smoother surface will be seasoned.....

      Field does have a texture on it and seasons very well. Lodge takes a lot longer to make smooth with season. Stargazer had to redo their skillets cause at first was to smooth. So remade with some texture recently. But the still testing.

      Yes, everyone rips Lodge for the pebbled finish but they know what they're doing. It's not because they're being cheap. I prefer my Lodge to my Field to be honest.

    Aackkkk!! You poured all that hot grease down your kitchen sink! You’d best take a couple of paper towels and soak out the grease and throw it into the trash first before cleaning the pan.

    These small companies should put you on a ban list so you stop taking advantage of them by returning everything after using them.

      Field Company happily offers a 45 day hassle free money back guarantee. It's cast iron, they just sell it again no problem.

  • @Splagnate

    Testing them and returning them is kinda messed up. If you can’t keep both then give one to someone as a gift. Making the company take a hit for your profit is pretty low.

      People have choice to choose the best product. The company can improve their product based on people reviews.

      @@Tubachu You are talking about cast iron. Your statement explains your viewpoint. You need to study up unless you are being facetious. You are talking about a technology that is hundreds if not thousands of years old and you think someone with a camera and internet can teach them something by cooking cornbread and eggs!? You are stealing. That is all.

    • @Splagnate
      @Splagnate 8 місяців тому +1

      Also you can do better. Keep it up!

    • @CastIronEric
      @CastIronEric  8 місяців тому +6

      Well it's not stealing unless you tried to get your refund AND keep the pan 🍳.
      However, the entire disagreement is moot since I kept both anyways!
