Bea Benadaret was originally going to be cast as "Granny" (ultimately she portrayed "Aunt Pearl"-Jethro's mother). However when she saw Irene Ryan's audition-she told Beverly Hillibillies creator Paul Henning--"you just found your Granny!!". The story goes that when Max Baer Jr. (Jethro) came for his audition he was so nervous he couldn't remember his lines. His audition was delayed until later in the day so Irene Ryan took him out to lunch and got him so drunk that when he returned for his audition he was so convincing as Jethro he was hired on the spot
Another true story about Granny (told by Irene Ryan herself in an interview) was that she wasn't going to get the part and they didn't even want her to audition, feeling she was too young to play granny. But as she said, an actress should be versatile enough to play any age if she's good. So she showed up to the audition in full makeup and costume as Granny and her acting was so good she got the part!
I would have to say that Granny was my favorite on the show. She was so sassy and funny to watch. She always said what was on her mind. RIP to the other cast members.
Granny was MY favorite too! Want to hear something funny? I always could picture Granny being married to Grandpa from The Munsters. Because they were both always doctoring and conjuring up spells and mixing up potions! LOL

One of the saddest deaths I’d have to say is that of Mr. Drysdale. I never realized he suffered from Alzheimer’s and basically died a lonely recluse. So sad 😞

The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the best shows ever made! I grew up in the 60’s watching it. My whole family wouldn’t miss an episode. Granny has always been my favorite! 😁❤️
I loved them all... especially Granny. She was a great actress. They all are truly missed but thank goodness we have reruns so they can live out their roles for ever. God bless them all.

Donna Douglas was the celebrity guest at our FFA livestock show in Wichita Falls, Texas around 1962 or so. I was 11 or 12. She walked over to our little group and shook all of our hands. We were completely dumbfounded. I've never seen anyone so breathtakingly beautiful. And every bit as sweet as Ellie Mae.

At age 8 I stood in line for a couple of hours at a rodeo in Omaha, Neb. to get her autograph. When I finally got up to the desk where she was at I couldn't say a word. LOL! She was indeed stunningly beautiful and as sweet as could be. She said "Hello, how are you?". I just stared at her. Fast forward to a year before she passed. I am sadden about the all of the ones that passed and how it happened. I still watch the Beverley Hillbillies EVERY DAY.. Feel bless to be able see how something different then sit coms today and how they stoop so low to create laughter.
20+ years ago we had acreage in AZ and every year for my daughter's birthday, I would get her an animal. First year dog, next year goat, next year chickens, etc. We had all kinds of animals. We started calling her ELI MAY :-) THE ENTIRE CAST WAS MY FAVORITE. They were all hilarious and good people. THANK YOU @Facts Verse
I watched the show start to finish and even the movie. I enjoyed every aspect of the humor and dedication each Star brought to the show. So sad to see shows like this practically disappear from television.
Max Baer Jr lives in Stateline Nevada in the Lake Tahoe area. I see him every once in a while ether at the Zephyr Cove Post Office or the Safeway grocery store in the same shopping area. He is always friendly and I get a kick that his vanity shows as he still has jet black hair/mustache and is much older than my 74 years.
We are and were blessed to have witnessed the collaboration of cast members ,mainly the 6, love them all , they brought enjoyment of living! God bless them all, sincerely
_When Granny and Jethro were in the same scene I always laughed those two were the funniest._ Yeah, whenever they got together, you just knew Jethro was going to get in trouble. 😂😂😂😂
I wish they were all still alive and still playing those roles. I guess that's what makes a great actor, they make you fall in love with their characters.
And there were those great characters who popped up on a regular basis like Pearl Bodine (Bea Benaderet) and Elverna Bradshaw. Not sure if I got that last name right but she and Granny never liked one another.
Also, Mrs Margaret Drysdale, hilariously snobby character was well played by actress Harriet E MacGibbon, passed in February of 1987.Granny,played by actress, Irene Ryan, had to be everyone's favorite for her endless energy and non stop comedy sketches.
LOL. I had to read that TWICE to figure out who you were talking about. You said "I met Ms. Douglas" and I was gonna reply how did Lisa DOUGLAS get into this
This show was one of many that I watched as a kid. The BH's was THE funniest. A show that had a great and talented cast that brought a lot of laughter in times of great tumult. Jethro, was my favorite. He always succeeded at trying to make things around him better, no matter what the task was. His father, Max Baer Sr was a heavyweight boxer. Great show! Five star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!!!
I knew Max Baer, Jr. was the only surviving cast member. I was sad when Donna Douglas died, as I share Elly May's love of "critters.". This was one of my favorite shows from my childhood & I still laugh at the reruns, especially Granny & Jed.
Why don't you say what he's up to today if you know him? Course they didn't mention the couple of movies that he did like Macon county Jackson county jail. Also do you know if he ever became a Christian? I know Donna was.
All of Irene Ryan's regular castmates wound up living longer than she did. She died at 70 in late April or early May of '73. Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro) is the only one living. He's 84. Posting 4-26-22.
Actually, the other one still got sick, tho they changed the makeup a little, buy still cuz I forget how long filming went over n hrs on set were crazy cruel. Theres a few others who famously ended up either not taking or getting the job and in ways better they didn’t. For anyone who hasn’t read about it, it’s interesting to look into it. Like how the cast and crew were all treated. What horrible conditions they had to deal with on set. Judy Garland was greatly affected in a bad way...and even for the time period and ppl were then being in contracts for yrs being ‘owned’ by a specific Film Co or network, the money they were paid was minimal and not worth it. I was shocked at ALL the things I didn’t know. What I read also explained what really was in background, and not the myth of the person hanging themselves caught on camera. Annnyway, wasn’t that long ago I read about it again, and there’s SO MUCH that is really sad it kinda changes how you see the movie at first.Sry.
They must've already done the singing parts because he still did that. Maybe the new guy couldn't sing as well so they did a voice over. I never knew he was in WOZ.
@@stpaulimdog Close….but the only voiceover Ebsen did was when the Tin Man, Lion and Dorthy skip off singing after they found him and oiled him back to life (so to speak.) Jack Haley was a singer in his own right on vaudeville before The Wizard if Oz.
The Beverly hillbillies was the greatest comedy ever conceived or shown to mankind despite what the critics said. It was enjoyed by America and that's what really counts. I bought the box set.
to this day many of the 30-minute episodes remain the highest-rated shows of all time--an episode called "The Giant Jackrabbit" remains the highest-rated 30-minute show of all time
We all loved that show! My Mom and Dad, my little sister and myself would all sit down in front of the TV and watch the antics of the Clampet family and laugh out loud. together! Good times! Was so sad to hear the passing of such funny and talented people! May they all R I P! We miss you all! Love the re runs!
You failed to mention that the show was still wildly popular when it was cancelled, a victim of the new CBS network head. He axed "any show with a tree in it", over a weekend I believe, as advertisers convinced him that the viewing public would be more interested in hip, fast moving shows set in cities. Consequently it was called "The Rural Purge". He took down many top twenty shows. Also, 16 of it's episodes remain among the top 100 viewed television episodes of all time. Pity.
I remember when there were talking to Buddy Ebsen one time, it was about the show. He was whittling a stick sitting on a bench, at his home. In the interview, it was asked by the person who was doing the interview with Buddy, and they asked him, what did he miss the most about the show. folkes' let me tell you something, this man has tears in his eyes and you could hear it in his voice. His exact words was He missed Granny!! As long as I live, I'll never forget that moment. It actually brought tears to my eyes because of it. Alot of people also don't know that he was the first to play the Tin Man, in The Wizard of Oz. But' because of him having a Allergic reaction from the paint they applied on him, which just about killed Buddy, the part was given to someone else.
I knew that Buddy was the first to play the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, it would have been interesting to see how the film would have been, had he played the role.
@@sharonholmes6083 I know right!! And I'm impressed with the fact that you know he was the first TinMan. Not many people know this. And I mean it as a compliment
Like most great shows, it wasn’t just one main character that shined. Each character played their part perfectly. Can’t imagine anyone else doing a better job. May they all RIP, it was great entertainment and I probably watched every episode multiple times.
🌟 I remember Nancy having a recurring role on Sanford and Son as Officer Hopkin's Mother and Buddy having a recurring role on Matt Houston as Matt's Uncle.
Even though the show ended shortly before I was born I remember watching it growing up as a child very funny. I don’t have one particular favorite when all of them are funny to me. They blend it together
I enjoyed watching this show as a kid ,never missed a show.Granny was my favorite character, she was so funny ,also reminded me of my grandma, she looked like her. I still enjoy watching reruns on Utube.☺
Buddy Ebsen is also the only original cast member to play in the Beverly Hillbillies movie with Lilly Tomlin, Jim Varney and Dabney Coleman. He reprised his role as Barnaby Jones in the movie working with Lilly Tomlin's Jane Hathaway to find Granny after she was kidnapped by Tyler and his co-conspirator to steal Jed's money.
I know Max aer tried to sue CBS (I believe it was approximately 2014) over a "secret deal" with an Iowa restaurant chain, Jethro's BBQ. The lawsuit was with CBS only, not the restaurants themselves. I have no idea how it turned out, but Jethro's BBQ is still thriving. You can even find videos about the restaurants here on UA-cam...
As a school kid in the UK, nothing stood in my way when it came to watching TBH, and my mates were just the same. We would drive the teachers mad doing impressions of the characters. Great memories, a truly ground breaking show
Granny was my favorite, she reminded me of my grandmother and my younger sister. They both have traits of Granny, always scheming and slow at some tasks.
This was one of my favorite shows! I love this movie! I wish more of this kind of movies would come out in today's world! And more kids would watch them! I loved Granny! She's to cute! Thanks for sharing!
I noticed a lot of comic angles from the Beverly hillbillies in modern sitcoms. I recently binge watched the first few seasons during a rainy weekend. I couldn't stop watching. It is a great show.
@@tgthorson51 Glad you caught it too, Thor. I think they should, at least, be able to get celebrities names correct. I also noticed they may even goof on the pronunciation of names. They should have someone fact-check their script before publishing.
A daughter of Buddy married a brother of one of my high school classmates. He was from Anderson, Indiana and had the last name of Abel. I believe the two of them remained married ... unusual for Hollywood relatives.
So, all things must pass. What a piece of history this was and continues to be in the annuals of comedy and TV. Made me really feel my age when I saw this. Rest in Peace those that have gone before us.
Bea Benaderet, who played Cousin Pearl Bodine, and also was the voice of Betty Rubble on The Flintstones and played Kate Bradley on Green Acres and Petticoat Junction, passed away from lung cancer in 1968. She was in 23 episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies.
not to forget as super spy, naught naught seven. He was hilarious as a big buffoon with a child's brain. Someday Jed need to have a long talk with him but it never came
I adored this show with all the antics. Miss Hathaway was probably my favorite. Nancy did a guest spot on I Love Lucy as the British maid when Lucy, Ricky, Ethyl and Fred went to England. Also remember, not only did Max play Jethro but he also played Jethrine (the daughter of Jeds cousin Pearl). This show along with many other comedies helped me get through my service to Uncle Sam in the late 60's.
Buddy Ebsen also started his career on stage as a dancer working with his sister. he was also known as Fess Parker's sidekick in the Davy Crockett series.
I love that we are still able to watch these very talented people. I love them all. Watch them every day, they Make me laugh, feel better. I love channel M E tv, making us able to watch our heroes.👍👍💕😃
When this show, and many others appeared on television, I was quite young and bed time orders came early, but I remember the enjoyment my parents had watching these early sit-coms.
I was the same way Me and my brothers and sisters were made to go to bed My mom and dad would sit up and watch the Beverly hillbillies I could hear them in there laughing and I could smell the popcorn , and I'd listen to the voices of the cast It was years later when I finally put the voices with the faces For some reason only hearing the voices from my bedroom and not seeing the faces I imagined uncle Jed Was Santa Claus.
@@jamesmckillen9035 actually, the studios actually they are ready did a remake it didn't go anywhere and it wasn't very well done! The guy that plays earnest played Jed Clampett. It came across like it was people trying to imitate the other actors the way they did their original characters and the movie bombed.
I was most saddened to learn about the death of the great Buddy Ebsen. His problems with his makeup in the Wizard of Oz presents a nice parable for the rest of us. Employers don't care about our personal, spiritual or aspirational health. They would gladly kill us for profits. This was demonstrated through the tragic story of Buddy Ebsen!
@@maryjoyspohrer256 Well, it WAS accidental. His body had a reaction to the to the real aluminum dust used in his makeup. This led to severe medical issues including body aches, muscle cramps and when the dust got into his lungs, shortness of breath which got so severe he had to be hospitalized for several weeks. I think what the OP is referring to was the fact that the bosses at MGM did not believe he was really ill and ordered him back to work. But the doctors and nurses got angry and basically told them off. This led to the studio changing the makeup to aluminum paste instead of dust for his replacement, Jack Haley. He died of respiratory failure but that was 64 years later so its doubtful it was related to the aluminum dust.
@retroguy94 just because he died 64 years later of respiratory, doesn't mean it wasn't connected to the makeup issue. A fatal illness can lurk and grow gradually for many years in the body till it peak's to take you out.
I was born in the 1950s and remember this show so well in the 1960s. it was one of the most popular shows on tv and everyone of all ages enjoyed it. My whole family watched it. Great actors and writers.
This has always been one of my very favorite shows, along with The Andy Griffith Show. And both Jed & Granny were my favorite characters! I have to admit, I love the black & white shows way more than those that were in color. The shows in the beginning were new with fresh ideas which were hilarious! I loved how they thought "Widow Fenwick & her daughter, Cynthy" were poorer than they were! I still double over laughing at that episode as I do with the others 😅
My favorite character was Jethro. Some of the funniest episodes were centered around him. Especially the 'Double naught spy' ones. I still laugh at them to this day!
We all gotta go some day...These characters were childhood memories...ESPECIALLY Donna Douglas.... But I loved watching Buddy Epson dance...with Shirley Temple as well as others. I always wondered what The Wizard Of Oz would have been like with Buddy playing the Tin Man.
I regretted how the show itself died. As with many other "rural" and family-oriented programs at the time, there was a movement to replace the show with something more off-color, for some ulterior reason. I am surprised that the network executives' offices did not have red lights outside!
Watched the show in my pre- teens when it first aired. Loved it much! Even more now as l am older than all of them were then! Comedy now is so farcical comparably speaking, alas.
That was my favorite show.I love it.When I had a a rough day.I could watch this and find happiness. I was 9 years when it came on.Still wish it was on.

The Beverly Hillbillies was one of my favorite shows when I was growing up. My mother said that she remembered Buddy Ebsen as a Song and Dance man.
I always watched The Hillbillies growing up. Fun show! All were great actors!
Granny was my favorite, she was so cute and energetic. I still watch reruns of the show and enjoy them
G
!
I agree!!!!
I liked Mrs Driesdale and Miss Hathaway.
Granny made the show. She was a little spitfire. I always liked when she would get hopping mad with Mrs. Drysdale.
Granny was my favorite also! I did like Jethro and Jed with their funny lines. My favorite was when they asked Jethro why there was no snow and ice in California and he answered - Don't ask me, I didn't take it. lol
I am sadden about the all of the ones that passed and how it happened.
I still watch the Beverley Hillbillies EVERY DAY..
Feel bless to be able see how something different then sit coms today and how they stoop so low to create laughter.
EVEN TODAY THEY ALL ARE TRULY MISSED THEY WERE LEGENDS !!!!!!
You know them personally?
@@clayjohnson5812 I MET TWO OF THEM THEY WERE DOWN TO EARTH WITH GREAT WONDERFUL PERSONALITY

Such an underrated show. It never received the accolades it truly deserved. Perfect cast, hilarious comedy.
Thanks for watching!
I watched the show start to finish and even the movie. I enjoyed every aspect of the humor and dedication each Star brought to the show. So sad to see shows like this practically disappear from television.
@Thomas Steel mom
Hello Williams how are you doing
They managed to avoid caricaturing their roles.
I loved them all and can't pick which one is my favorite! The show would not have been the same without any one of them!
Jethrow was my favorite.
I wood love to talk to him about granny
Thx for the info! It’s good to know he isn’t a recluse in a home somewhere.
We are and were blessed to have witnessed the collaboration of cast members ,mainly the 6, love them all , they brought enjoyment of living! God bless them all, sincerely
When Granny and Jethro were in the same scene I always laughed those two were the funniest.
_When Granny and Jethro were in the same scene I always laughed those two were the funniest._
Yeah, whenever they got together, you just knew Jethro was going to get in trouble. 😂😂😂😂
I wish they were all still alive and still playing those roles. I guess that's what makes a great actor, they make you fall in love with their characters.
Granny was my favorite. A very generous lady and caring. Will all ways love her and wish I could have met her. God bless her.
My favorite show when I was growing up. Couldn't imagine anyone else playing their roles.
I'm 55 and I still watch reruns
And there were those great characters who popped up on a regular basis like Pearl Bodine (Bea Benaderet) and Elverna Bradshaw. Not sure if I got that last name right but she and Granny never liked one another.
One of my favorite repeated quotes is..."Elly Mae!!!! Fetch my shotgun!!!" You knew it was fixing to hit the fan then!!😂😂😂😂
Memorable indeed, thank you for bringing back memories! What other types of video would you like to see?
Also, Mrs Margaret Drysdale, hilariously snobby character was well played by actress Harriet E MacGibbon, passed in February of 1987.Granny,played by actress, Irene Ryan, had to be everyone's favorite for her endless energy and non stop comedy sketches.
I met Ms Douglas when she came to my school in north Louisiana. She read her book to the kids. She was a sweet, kind lady.
LOL. I had to read that TWICE to figure out who you were talking about. You said "I met Ms. Douglas" and I was gonna reply how did Lisa DOUGLAS get into this
What a lovely memory! You're very lucky to have met "Elly May Clampett"! 👍😂
I like when he played role of his sister jesrine.
@@jessieckark4132 It's Jethrine! and I didn't care for her
What do you mean WAS the only surviving cast member? He's still alive!!!!!!
All of Irene Ryan's regular castmates wound up living longer than she did. She died at 70 in late April or early May of '73. Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro) is the only one living. He's 84. Posting 4-26-22.
Part of the golden era of cable tv. It will always bring me fond memories.
Thanks for watching!
Buddy was supposed to be the Tin Man in WOZ, but he had a allergic reaction to the silver paint.
It almost killed him.
Yes I remember that and I also recently read it somewhere that he had an allergic reaction to the silver paint but I guess the next person didn’t
The Beverly hillbillies was the greatest comedy ever conceived or shown to mankind despite what the critics said. It was enjoyed by America and that's what really counts. I bought the box set.
Where can you get the box set today it used to be available at Walmart?
to this day many of the 30-minute episodes remain the highest-rated shows of all time--an episode called "The Giant Jackrabbit" remains the highest-rated 30-minute show of all time
A friend lived in Palm Springs, CA, and was a neighbor to Nancy Culp. He rarely saw her but said she was very nice and just liked things quiet
Pity.
My favorite sitcom of all time
I remember when there were talking to Buddy Ebsen one time, it was about the show.
Donna Douglass was my favorite because of her love for Animals (R.i.P. Ella mae)

Donna Douglas used to date Elvis
She was so pretty!

Like most great shows, it wasn’t just one main character that shined. Each character played their part perfectly. Can’t imagine anyone else doing a better job. May they all RIP, it was great entertainment and I probably watched every episode multiple times.
Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite shows. Lots of laughs and fond memories!😊
Loved all these characters since I was a tot, when the show first aired. I miss good, clean humor! Granny was my favorite 💓
Granny's the best.
The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the best TV shows of my younger years. Thanks for this video telling us how they died.
Thanks for watching, Dave!

These are still just as good to watch today. We watched an episode a day before our kids went to school. Good times!
We lived to watch the Beverly Hillbillies!! They were so funny!!
Great memories, a truly ground breaking show
I love that
I can't pick whose death saddens me the most because I liked them all. 😭😭😭
Good old days 💕...I remember growing up in the 80s as lil girl watching this show with my grandma... good ole times...
Granny was my favorite, she reminded me of my grandmother and my younger sister. They both have traits of Granny, always scheming and slow at some tasks.
They weren't displaced by the government they sold the land to the oil company?
I know right!! You would think he'd at least watch the 1st episode to get the facts straight!!! SMDH 🤦🏽
Nancy Kulp was on the Bob Cummings show, not Cunningham.

Nancy Kulp was in the Bob Cummings Show, not Cunninham!
This channel's creators are idiots. I find tons of mistakes like this in their video.
Yes! I was going to say the same thing... Bob Cummings!
Yes, I was about to reply exactly what you did and was glad to see someone else caught the error too. Good catch, Bonnie ☺
@@michaelcappetta1746 I also caught that boo boo.
@@tgthorson51 Glad you caught it too, Thor. I think they should, at least, be able to get celebrities names correct. I also noticed they may even goof on the pronunciation of names. They should have someone fact-check their script before publishing.
I liked Milburn Drysdale. It was always hilarious when he would pass out and Miss Jane would have to get a pack of 20's to revive him.
Buddy Ebsen was a neighbor of mine on Balboa Island in 1967. Was very friendly.
Thanks for watching, John!

Hello
Jethro was my favorite! For someone only with a sixth grade education he was ambitious. Brain surgeon, movie director etc..
not to forget as super spy, naught naught seven. He was hilarious as a big buffoon with a child's brain. Someday Jed need to have a long talk with him but it never came
He was in a great movie Macon County Line
They do not mention this
Jethro mingled with beautiful women as well.
Lol jethro was a jack of all trades and how the banker had to go along with their shenanigans ❤️😇
When this first aired on TV in glorious black & white with VHS & UHS it was 1 of my favorites.
Programs like those you don*t see anymore, that is when they had a lot of great actors, and some unknown actors who would become famous.
I love that we are still able to watch these very talented people. I love them all. Watch them every day, they
Make me laugh, feel better. I love channel M E tv, making us able to watch our heroes.👍👍💕😃

Me and my brothers and sisters were made to go to bed
My mom and dad would sit up and watch the Beverly hillbillies
I could hear them in there laughing and I could smell the popcorn , and I'd listen to the voices of the cast It was years later when I finally put the voices with the faces

One of my favorite shows....it was so funny with STRONG character steteotypes. Loved it!
Every single cast member of The Beverly hillbillies made me laugh, but the deaths of a lot of them make me sad. I wish they would do a remake
they actually did a remake movie but it wasn't that good
Granny was an old rabbit. Sweet little bunny🐰🐰🐰
Remakes hardly ever work. They never seem to capture the magic of the originals. I'm happy with reruns.
But they can't do a remake, they jus can't. All but Jethro is dead.
Well hey......95 years old! God bless him! He was a VERY good man in real life too.
What happened to him then though was accidental.
Thanks for watching!
They were all great actors and actresses. Loved then all. I don't think life would have Been the same without this wonderful comedy!
You missed the fact that Max Baer became a successful producer and director. He by no means failed in the industry.

I love this show. I love all of the older shows.
I still watch the reruns every weekend. Sad to see how they died. Knew Max was alive still. The humour is so funny.
