  • Underwater video recorded on world class fluke (flounder) fishing grounds. This is my best and the first time I've captured true doormats hitting a lure with the underwater camera.

    I have a problem getting my bucktail to sink to the bottom. Even shallow water I can never seem to feel bottom with it. Do you have any tips? I find from a kayak by the way

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 років тому

      Sounds like you need more weight on the jig. Keep an eye on the spool rotating while the offering sinks. The point of contact with the bottom should seem clear by the sudden slowdown in the spool rotating. You want to let your rig freefall to the bottom.

    Thanks for your Videos john,Ive been fluke fishing for 25 years around Misquamicut block island and montauk.Ive had good days and and not so good days and what I have have surmised its all about wind direction and stages of the tide...But I have always wondered how many fish are following or looking at your offerings....These videos are proof that that they are at least looking at them LOL....Good job appreciate your efforts

    I should be talking about fishing - but instead - what is with the green color of the water? That is not normal. I wonder what causes it. I've seen blue, red, brown, grey, but never antifreeze green in the North Atlantic. Not in 35 years of fishing.

    It is a shame.... from one who knows NY fishing from the late 50's to today.. these "world class" fishing grounds are no more.. unless one is willing to travel to the East End. One used to be able to surf cast from beaches all along Jones shore's east to Captree & Robert Moses parks and come home with as many fish as one needed.. No more.. Over fishing and mostly pollution has ruined NYC thru Nassau county fishing grounds.. Be prepared to drive 3hrs or more (if coming from NYC) then one must rent or use your boat to get to these grounds.. Shame.

    Thanks John. I’m a 50 yr old guy fishing Sandy Hook NJ but grew up fishing in Long Island as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. You think you know what’s going on down there sometimes and I’m very surprised to see how hesitant some of the fish are especially the Sea Bass and Porgies. They give the impression that they just slam everything they see. And I never would’ve guessed Fluke would follow behind like that and opt not to strike. I always thought meals were hard to come by down there and they took advantage of that. Thanx again for the great footage...

    It’s nice to see there are still some, however I don’t think it’s as good as it could be.
    Essentially there is always room for improvement.

    thanks john for all your hard work of recording all your videos and sharing.. but if its ok with you i have 2-3 questions to ask you, since im not a fluke fisherman as of yet, but will start this year,for now im gathering info doing research for when i do start..i wanted to ask you if you have tried strip bait on a jig head and or bucktail jigged off the bottom as you do with gulps? ., and not trolling off the bottom, as in this video, wouldn't the results be different...? being that seabass and flukes are opportunistic fishes ..and seeing an injured fish/ or a stripof to attack mode...or you feel that gulps would be superior to strip cut fresh bait... im only asking due to that i saw another fisherman video, where him and hes friend were fishing for flukes initially with the gulps and were not doing good and as soon as they changed adding only strip cut baits to there bucktails it significantly made a difference..one even caught ..hes biggest flounder of 10lbs...what's your take please ..?...thanks

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 років тому

      Absolutely we will sometimes tip the jigs and teasers with fluke or searobin strips. These do a good job of standing up well to the interference fish (seabass, porgies). Generally we find the gulp works better, but there have been times that they seemed to prefer the strips.

    John this video tells me the strike zone for fluke may be higher than I thought, which means I don't necessarily have to consistently bounce off bottom. I'm just tired of losing rigs in structure. You concur?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      It depends where you thought the strike zone was. I'd like to keep my offering a foot or two off the bottom. It seems the porgies and seabass are much more willing to go higher, but that's not surprising given the fluke is built to lay flat on the bottom.
