when you guys released the first episode it was the end of my senior year of High School and I was about to leave for Army bootcamp (I'm not a Punisher military finatic, it's just a great episode). I listened to that episode almost on loop along with so many other of your guys episodes before I left. So happy to see this continuation. I would love to get a Life Story for Punisher. Especially a moment of kid Frank being a fan of Captain America, a legendary soldier who died in WW2, and then finding out he's back.
This is one of the reasons I think the Netflix version of Frank might be my favorite, cause it’s the best of both worlds. They make him this incredibly tragic & sympathetic figure, but go out of their way to say he is a very unhinged serial killer. He was a villain in Daredevil season 2, and in his own show, for every badass fight scene with him that makes him look awesome, there’s another scene from another person’s perspective of his kills, and it’s disturbing & uncomfortable. He genuinely loved and cared for his family, and was an overall good dad, but then they show that one scene where his son makes that comment and Frank goes berserk. It’s a perfect marriage between the two takes on the character

I absolutely loved this run! I also love Punisher as a character. He is a great example of doing an inversion of the fridging trope. While normally children and women die to give character motivation, Frank was always looking for a motivation. He just needed an excuse to inflict violence. Some kind of justifiable cause. Not to say he didn't love his family but he loves his war more. It is can be argued if this reason is too much, and maybe Frank hates himself for loving violence so much. Honestly the Max origin and this origin can still fit together when adjusted for few timeline related retcons.
Tyger really goes against this comic. He’s unhinged yes but from that comic I get the sense that he’s not looking for an excuse. Like he enjoys war and punishing the guilty but he also wants first and foremost to do the right thing. His family getting shot is just an excuse but it also very much isn’t an excuse because it shapes his world view to where criminals are viewed as the infection.
With X-Men 97 getting done and the final 3 part finale being Tollerence of Extinction The next two back issues should be E is for Extinction and Operation Zero Tolerance
Honestly, it would be fascinating to see Frank come back after his Weirdworld vacation and processing this new information and him being, well... mellowed out. He took his ex-wife's words to heart. That he was just using her and the kids as an excuse to do what he always wanted to. And he still does want to. But he understands it better now. And of course all the heroes quickly find out he's back, and they're quick to let him know he's skating on thin ice. But he promises he's done with his old way of life. He doesn't want to do that anymore. Instead he wants to do something WAY more fucked up. Pulling from the heavily underrated Thomas Jane Punisher movie (fight me!), Frank's new M.O. isn't to just go in and shoot everything, but to orchestrate bad people dismantling their own lives BECAUSE they are bad people. So he's just using his skills and awareness of the mindset to just feed these people all the rope they could ever want until they hang themselves.
I'm so glad you guys covered this, I'm not a fan of the story and what it does do the punisher but I'm so glad you enjoyed covering it and I love seeing people enjoy stuff they like. I think Ares wearing Punisher's old symbol is symbolic of all the people stealing it to use it for hateful/violent purposes - the logo is "stolen" by Ares representing "senseless violence"
Volume 1 was fun and unique, but from then on, it felt like Marvel was punishing (no pun intended) the character for things out of his control. Especially the Maria stuff, her grandstanding Frank, then using the blood money to benefit herself at the end just feels so slimey to me. I'm not defending Frank and I think Maria seeing what he became after they died and being disgusted by that would've been sufficient enough but for some reason we also have to show Maria and Franks relationship was toxic and a lie from the start. Just feels like a unnecessary middle finger and if Marvel weren't massive hypocrites that also know Franks a good cash cow for merch and stuff I feel they 100% would've had him die at the end and have this new SHIELD agent Punisher be the permanent replacement.
When I first read it I thought that the kid at the end was the kid Frank didn't kill at the compound and that's why the priestess wanted him, like an dark fuck you to Frank.
The series makes perfect sense. According to Gerry Conway, Punisher was based on Men's adventure character Mack Bolan,Executioner. Logically, the 21st century lens would draw more from the likes of Dexter, which was about a serial killer who kills evil people for his one reasons, but admits to not being able to feel connected to people.
There is a scene in this book that is absolutely devastating to me. Frank gets into bed with Maria one night, when he's actually trying to open up, and she says something like"he tried to tell me about something that happened when he was 10 years old but he couldn't get the words out". Like Frank was so close to opening up and maybe healing just a little and he couldn't do it. It's honestly heart wrenching to me.

I'm not against political commentary, that was not remotely my argument, Garth Ennis's run was very political, he didn't do what Jason Aaron did, my issue is that they threw the character under the bus and ruined him because of their own personal moral and political sensibilities.
Whenever I see the Puisher logo on the back of a lifted pick-up truck, I always sarcastically say, "this guy must be a huge Punisher fan. I wonder what his favorite run is?"

See I have mixed feelings on this. I think this works better in a different reality or out of canon material, because I like the stories where Frank is written as a sympathetic character. But that said he hasn’t been written that way in a long time. Every writer just wants to write him as more and more and more of a psychopath who never really did this for his family. For that version of Frank this is great. To me personally though Cosmic Ghost Rider is just the perfect evolution of Frank Castle, and this Frank and that one don’t feel like the same person to me which turns me off a bit.
In Aaron's MAX run it involved a revelation that Frank had taken his family to the park so he could talk to Maria about divorce, in this instance continuity story Aaron has Maria divorce Frank. Something, something symmetry.

You guys are my go-to channel for comic books! Ralph Lundgren, Thomas Jane, Ray Stevenson and Jon Bernthal are my favorite actors to have played the Punisher. You guys should cover “E For Extinction” and “Operation: Zero Tolerance” since X-Men ‘97 is at the 3 part season finale.😊🤓👊🏾💙

There's also the end of Greg Rucka's run, where the Avengers take down Punisher and puts him in a super-prison at the bottom of lake michigan with absolutely no way out (also a really awesome story worth checking out) and then he's just back out on whatever his next book was (didn't read it so not sure if they even bothered to try and explain it). Oh, and coincident;y to you thinking about Maria becomeing Lady Punisher, Rucka's run is all about him meeting a lady marine who lost her family just like he did, and her taking up his mission once he's in jail. I don't think she ever shows up again either...
Honestly, the reactionship between Frank and his Wife was more interesting than the rest of this series for me. Like fuck the ninja shit, let me see how this marriage falls apart between this soldier and this woman.

There's also the completely forgotten John Ostrander run where Frank joins a low level mob family, kind of sort of begins to reevaluate his views. Then after eleven issues there's a random Onslaught tie in and it turns into a glorified X-Men spinoff for five issues. 🤣
Surprised in all of Franks history, Mistress Death has never been brought up, the litteral representation of death. Ares may claim hes Franks god, but I say otherwise.
So I've never read this, but as Punisher fan I absolutely love this based on this video. Making him a psycho looking for an excuse to kill rather than a guy that just snapped is so much more interesting and probably more realistic tbh. I should really read this.
Aaron also took over Punisher Max after Ennis left. He did the same thing there and I think issue for issue it's more than worthy of comparison to Ennis' run.
Honestly this went very different from where i thought it was going but i like it, I honestly think though i'd prefer if frank never killed anyone as a kid, and the idea was that his inner psychopath was always lurking, and that by becoming a solider because he glorified cap, he got a taste of a way to vent his inner pychopathy. I love the idea how the punisher idea is his form of an affair, but I would have liked if frank would get into fights to beat up criminals, but try to be better and stop short of killing them, cause he is trying to become better for his family.But since its an addiction he slowly is getting more and more savage up until the day at the park where he unleashes all his inner madness. Like him starting off as a complete psycho, and not it being an underlying thing that slowly increases over time makes it less interesting to me, since I honestly can't buy punisher not being a crazy murderer, rather than being a crazy vigilante. Like with how they made frank right now in his youth, he should have went from what could be "justified killings" upto killings without rhyme or reason, but here he stayed the course of "Justified Killings", which means he stagnated in terms of psychopathic progression. IDK if i'm explaining it correctly though.
I’ve always found Frank to be pretty one note. If you’ve read one “classic” Punisher story you’ve read them all. I do love when they do off the wall shot with him. Frankencastle, Cosmic Ghost Rider and this. Toss a gimmick on top and it at least isn’t the same old same old
He's an angry white dude with a chip on his shoulder and a huge collection of guns. That's at least a decent number of real life people. Punisher is barely even fiction.
Haven’t watched the video yet but I really loved this run of the punisher. I was surprised with how people on the internet were treating this run. Sometimes I think people forget that frank a monster he doesn’t get a happy ending.
I don’t mind the changes made to Frank’s marriage. It’s one thing to take something like the Death of Gwen Stacy and say “oh this beloved character actually hated Peter”, but Frank’s family didn’t have background. They were created to be 💀 . And really, I think it’s almost a nuanced take to present Frank’s loss as an excuse for violence. He isn’t a hero. He isn’t entirely bad, but he’s not a superhero in a cape and mask.
It definitely isn't and ruins his character IMO. The entire point was that Frank was someone who was able to move on despite being haunted by his demons but was dragged back into his personal Hell and shared that pain with criminals. Frank already being crazy misses the point entirely. It's truly a jump the shark moment for the character
the end in kinda remind me of the punisher and conan comic part of savage avenger. draging his family coffins, speaking of krom with the barbarian. myea, going to DnD world not that bad of an idea

There's also the end of Greg Rucka's run, where the Avengers take down Punisher and puts him in a super-prison at the bottom of lake michigan with absolutely no way out (also a really awesome story worth checking out) and then he's just back out on whatever his next book was (didn't read it so not sure if they even bothered to try and explain it).
Oh, and coincident;y to you thinking about Maria becomeing Lady Punisher, Rucka's run is all about him meeting a lady marine who lost her family just like he did, and her taking up his mission once he's in jail. I don't think she ever shows up again either...

There's also the completely forgotten John Ostrander run where Frank joins a low level mob family, kind of sort of begins to reevaluate his views. Then after eleven issues there's a random Onslaught tie in and it turns into a glorified X-Men spinoff for five issues. 🤣
Surprised in all of Franks history, Mistress Death has never been brought up, the litteral representation of death. Ares may claim hes Franks god, but I say otherwise.
So I've never read this, but as Punisher fan I absolutely love this based on this video. Making him a psycho looking for an excuse to kill rather than a guy that just snapped is so much more interesting and probably more realistic tbh. I should really read this.
Aaron also took over Punisher Max after Ennis left. He did the same thing there and I think issue for issue it's more than worthy of comparison to Ennis' run.
This run was..interesting
Honestly this went very different from where i thought it was going but i like it, I honestly think though i'd prefer if frank never killed anyone as a kid, and the idea was that his inner psychopath was always lurking, and that by becoming a solider because he glorified cap, he got a taste of a way to vent his inner pychopathy. I love the idea how the punisher idea is his form of an affair, but I would have liked if frank would get into fights to beat up criminals, but try to be better and stop short of killing them, cause he is trying to become better for his family.But since its an addiction he slowly is getting more and more savage up until the day at the park where he unleashes all his inner madness. Like him starting off as a complete psycho, and not it being an underlying thing that slowly increases over time makes it less interesting to me, since I honestly can't buy punisher not being a crazy murderer, rather than being a crazy vigilante. Like with how they made frank right now in his youth, he should have went from what could be "justified killings" upto killings without rhyme or reason, but here he stayed the course of "Justified Killings", which means he stagnated in terms of psychopathic progression. IDK if i'm explaining it correctly though.
I’ve always found Frank to be pretty one note. If you’ve read one “classic” Punisher story you’ve read them all. I do love when they do off the wall shot with him. Frankencastle, Cosmic Ghost Rider and this. Toss a gimmick on top and it at least isn’t the same old same old

That's at least a decent number of real life people. Punisher is barely even fiction.

Haven’t watched the video yet but I really loved this run of the punisher. I was surprised with how people on the internet were treating this run. Sometimes I think people forget that frank a monster he doesn’t get a happy ending.
Why is he a monster? Because he kill bad people?

I don’t mind the changes made to Frank’s marriage. It’s one thing to take something like the Death of Gwen Stacy and say “oh this beloved character actually hated Peter”, but Frank’s family didn’t have background. They were created to be 💀 . And really, I think it’s almost a nuanced take to present Frank’s loss as an excuse for violence. He isn’t a hero. He isn’t entirely bad, but he’s not a superhero in a cape and mask.
It definitely isn't and ruins his character IMO. The entire point was that Frank was someone who was able to move on despite being haunted by his demons but was dragged back into his personal Hell and shared that pain with criminals. Frank already being crazy misses the point entirely. It's truly a jump the shark moment for the character
the end in kinda remind me of the punisher and conan comic part of savage avenger. draging his family coffins, speaking of krom with the barbarian. myea, going to DnD world not that bad of an idea
