He was an arrogant, angry dickhead as a young man-- I'm sorry, this was the obvious truth. He also probably committed a crime for which he would have gone to jail. I do think he was trying desperately to make up for that in his post-retirement years. Part of the tragedy of his early death was that he was still changing, still striving to be a better person. His parents don't sound like the nicest people, and it sounds like he made them pay for that too. Sucks all around.
If the person is family, you kind of have to at least TRY to reconcile. If they refuse to even speak, then that's on them. Kobe's parents crushed him and the ship has sailed.

I never understand when parents disapprove of their kids husbands ands wives. It only makes the situation worse when they start drama. We hated my bother in law but my sister loved him so we supported her and now after 6 years, he’s actually a really cool dude.

Kobe sounds like he was a selfish asshole and his parents got tired of it. Vanessa was a video vixen, most parents wouldn’t approve of their son marrying a stripper which is the same line of work or worst as a video vixen. The sad part is that Kobe is gone without reconciliation with his parents. It sounds like Vanessa was a big part of the problem and breakdown in the Bryant family demise.

@@dually81from what I understand it was some sort of petty female beef between Vanessa and Pam (classic wife vs mother nonsense power struggle) and Joe played it off like he also had a major issue so his wife didn't look bad.
It's a pretty big disagreement. Kobe knew what his parents wanted. They created him, after all. He knew that marrying this woman would cause a rift between his parents who felt strongly about preserving their family line, as God created it (roughly speaking, since there was likely at least some European ancestry in the family, but not significant).

My oldest son has a girlfriend
who doesn’t like me. I have only met her once, because I live more than 2,000 miles away. I reached out to her, and even sent her a couple of gifts, to extend a cordial hand. She did even respond with a simple thanks. What I have concluded is that she wants to be the center of my son’s world. I contrast, I wanted my husband to have a close relationship with his family. I spoke to my mother-in-law regularly, even though she wanted my husband to be with someone else. The wife plays a crucial role in the cohesiveness of the family. Kobe’s wife has an acrimonious relationship with her own mother.
I totally get your pain but expecting her to be like you is totally unrealistic and unfair. You cannot re-raise this woman. It's not in your place and it was never in your place as she is not your child.
Maybe she was raised to be that way through unwise counsel or simply bad examples and experiences as she was growing up. It's your own son you should be concerned about. Maintain a healthy relationship with your own child and pay no attention to this woman unapologetically without necessarily being rude or abrasive.

If nothing else is true, as parents, you have to demonstrate to your children that you are the bigger person. I didnt see that here. I made mistakes when i was young, including marrying a woman my mother told me not to. She was there for me anyway. And when i had problems in that marriage, she said plainly, "that's what you chose. Dont cry to me about your choices". The message was clear, take responsibility, but i love you through it.

Not sure what happened but they called off the divorce 13 months later, maybe because of the kids? Although we don't know what stopped her from going through with the divorce, filing one revealed what she was really after.

You missed the part where Vanessa’s mother blackmailed Kobe saying he better do right and give them money or she’d report him for dating an underaged Vanessa. He sought advice from others in the league and it was decided that the best course of action would be to marry Vanessa. He was essentially coerced into marrying her. I honestly think he would have been a bachelor for far longer if it weren’t for her but he settled down really young. Kobe’s parents wanted nothing to do with Vanessa and her mother because they knew what they were doing. They knew they were gold diggers. Whats missing in this is how Kobe forsaked his entire family for immigrants and treated them better than his own family. They were literally cut out of a lot at his funeral and his entire wealth and legacy was inherited by people who don't have two generations of family in this country. For me personally, that would be unforgiveable. That only happens with black people. You don't see other groups forsaking their own tribes for black people. Kobe's father stood on principle and I admire him for that. My children are free to reject all of the principles and values that I raised them on and I'm free to reject them for doing so.
