How to Kayak - Edge Control

- Several viewers have requested an unedited/raw video concept to some the the trips and training that we do on occasion. So come along for an inside look at a training day we had with Squirrel and some other friends. If you are just learning to kayak, perhaps this video may be of some use to you. This video is an informal look at a day on the water dedicated to improving some of Squirrel's (and all of our) kayaking skills. If you are looking for formal kayak instruction, there are many options out there to include ACE Kayaking School, H2O Dreams, ERA, NOC, USNWC and more. But if those options are not yet available to you, perhaps there may be some skills and techniques covered in this video that can help in the meantime...Enjoy!

thanks for your videos. I have been devouring them for the last 2 weeks... as i thought i was a decent kayaker, until i went to a rapid course that i have done before, but this time with twice as much water... i had to quickly deal with holes, swimming & snags, in my sit on top kayak... and realised i didn't have the skills required for proper white water after all... when the water was lower, i taught someone else just from my instincts, which was to decide your course and then be aggressive... but when the water was higher and the holes appeared, i lost my nerve once and stopped paddling, held on, went in... and then swam down and over the next rapids... oh, and after standing up for a while.... so anyway, thanks. I going to get a proper kayak, and get back on the horse (-: (the rapids went from class 2 to class 3 with the rain we had, class 2 was cruising, class 3 was actually dangerous given my lack of knowledge, and swimming into the snags...)
yes, having the proper gear, training and skills are a must for actual whitewater! I would encourage you to seek out a group in your area that can get you up to speed and fast track the progress. A river becomes a jungle gym of fun to a prepared boater! Where do you live?
62 he young man, wants to apply for a Pete river kings scholarship! Have 2old 8.5ft creek boats, old Werner Sherpa paddle, and helmet. Been doing 1 to 1.5 class in my back yard. One day like that would be big deal. In ky 3 miles from tenn. This video was enormously helpful. Your demeanor makes u an excellent teacher. Thanks for the video's Mr. Pete.
Right on bushpilot! Apparently, everyone that I have ever instructed was on the River Kings Scholarship! LOL. I know the next few months is slammed and then getting cold. Remind me again in the spring and lets try to make that happen!
Man, I wish you were closer haha. Love to meet, I'm just getting into kayak and loving the videos. Lots of learning to do, I'm aware but excited about that part. I'm in the RDU area.
right on Colby! There is a pool roll session or two over in the RDU area through the winter. It is a great place to work on skills and meet some fine folks from the Carolina Canoe Club.
Love the format and banter between everyone.
Thanks Tim!
Dear River Kings,
I am loving your videos. I am turning 65 this year and I am looking for a sport that can make me feel alive again. Your videos have inspired me to learn how to whitewater kayak. Even though I live in a state with lots of rivers I am unable to find the proper training. I live on the west coast and I was wondering if you offer an intensive week long training session? I want to learn from A to Z starting from beginner. I don't mind if you document my progress on UA-cam. I am an avid hiker and swimmer and I am not afraid of a challenge if performed in the right circumstances with step by step training and the proper safety procedures in place which I have witnessed in your videos. I would love to hear if you offer such a class? By the way, I love your laugh and your sense of humor. It cheers me up every day. Thank you 😊.
Right on Sydney! I do not offer any formal instruction, but there are several options for just that here in NC. ACE Kayaking School, H2O Dreams and perhaps the best for what you have described is the NOC Kayaking School on the Nantahala. I believe they have just the program you are looking for along with housing and other accommodations...Hope that helps and thanks for the encouragement!
@@RiverKingsKayak Thanks for letting me know River Kings. If I can't learn from you in person I'll probably just stay out on the west coast and try to take some classes out here to save some money on travel etc. Thanks for all of the great videos. I am learning a lot from them.
@@RiverKingsKayak Thank you for your suggestions. Even though I will have to incur travel expenses and lodging it might be worth it to come out there. Thanks again RiverKings.
Impressive instructional video. Your words really help break down what you/ they are doing. You keep it fun. Thank u.
Thanks Captains Spitfire!
I've just started to learn to surf. The timing of this video is awesome. I'm watching it over and over....Thanks for putting out such excellent content!!!
Thanks DSC!
Another great video. I really enjoyed this format
Thanks Rick!
@49:45 - guy struggling to roll in the rapid right by Pete... Pete just sitting there doing a stern squirt. LMAO!!!
LOL! I saw that during the editing! LOL. That was Evan...I dont have to worry too much about him anymore anyway. He rolled up eventually!
@@RiverKingsKayak oh I’m sure he was fine. Just thought it was a funny scene given how normally you’re looking out for others. Just stalling the stern that time. 🤣
Great video! You should definitely put the occasional video with this format into the mix.
I'm thinking I will do that from time to time. Thanks Mike!

Great video. What river are you guys on?
Mayo River, at the boiling hole. Thanks rpsellers!
Dumb question but how are you attaching the patches to your headliner?
I think you are talking about in the truck...in which case the patches have the hook and loop (velcro) hooks and they grab the felt pretty good.
@@RiverKingsKayak thanks! Didn't realize it was that easy, HA!
