29th May 1940. 264 sqdn claimed 39 german aircraft, 30 confirmed including 9 me109s 18 Stukas and 3 me 110s, for the loss of 1 air gunner. Thereafter the 109 pilots changed tactics and sadly the defiants limitations were obvious.
The Defiant, in my opinion, suffered the same problem as the Bf-110; misuse. In my opinion, both should have been used solely as bomber destroyers, and left the fighters to planes like the Spitfire and 109.
That was one of the myths of Dunkirk. The British claimed 37 German planes shot down on that day without loss. Postwar records showed that on that day, total loss of German planes on ALL fronts (not just at Dunkirk) was 18.
@Geralt of Rivia Even assuming your ratio is correct, it does not in any way contradict what I said about the Defiant. Perhaps the confusion was that I did not mention specifically that the "37 German planes shot (on May 29) without any loss" were attributed to the "superb" Defiant fighters. That clearly was refuted by the fact that the total German plane losses on that day on all fronts (and not just over Dunkirk) was only 18. That discrepancy had been noted by more than one writer. Sorry I didn't emphasize the figures were for DEFIANT fighters (which was what this video was about) on that day.
@@SnowyHaze249 no they didn't. Fighter Command suffered greater casualties; it was approximately 1:1.5 in the German favour. Read Norman Franks' work or Seb Cox from the Air Historical Branch.
One problem, the VY codes on these Defiants are wrong. VY codes were on the Hurricanes of 85 squadron under the command of Squadron Leader Peter Townsend.
They were assigned to 85 squadron for night fighting duties therefore would be painted black with red lettering. As night fighters they would be used to protect Britain during the blitz not sent on operations over enemy territory. 85 only flew three sorties before re-equipping with Havocs with a turbine light, which they flew alongside hurricanes. One of my friends grandfather flew Defiants with 264 squadron. I've read his log books.
@MrWindycat31 Well, not necessarily a random tactic. I remember reading about the Defiant that when it was designed in the 30's, the idea of how of aerial warfare was to be in the future was all about big, fast bombers flying so high and fast that no fighter cover was to be needed. So Defiant was designed to counter these kind of bomber formations. But of course, that never happened and Defiant's brief success as a day fighter lasted only until the Germans quickly figured out its shortcomings.
The defiant had to be one of the worst plane designed ever as for it going against an ME 110 it would not stand a chance all you would have to do is get below its tail and it could not fire back. If you got in front the 110 could shoot you down because the defiant had no forward firing guns. The 110 had awesome firepower the defiant pea shooters. My cousin was killed in one of those flying death traps.
You obviously know very little about the ME110 It did have forward firing guns of very heavy caliber as many B17 found out. Four 20mm and one 35mm could. A single 20mm cannon had more fire power than all four 303 pea shooters on the defiant. Schnaufer shot down seven Lancasters in nineteen minutes with one of those heavy old 110s he survived the war. If you were in a defiant you needed to keep miles away from the 110
Great to see this aircraft modelled in detail, a shame it wasnt much use for real but this is a very realistic feeling clip, I can feel the tension of the crews ill suited for combat
as you get that the antialiasing filter works for you? so that is not the famous teeth of saw... I do not get active what you select in the NVIDIA control panel? you could put a description of your configuration in your conf.ini and nvidia control panel. Thank you
Poor tactics employed here by the Defiants. Note the attacking 110 came from behind and below, beyond reach of the turret guns. Defiant best response would have been to dive, then form up a circle, keeping the attacker above and behind to bring the turret guns to bear.
@Caithness90 The Blenheim when it first flew, in 1935 was actually a good airplane, it was faster than most of the fighters at the time, but it became out-dated at the beginning of WWII when new more modern fighters were invented.
The Defiant was designed as a bomber-destroyer to counter the much-feared Luftwaffe bomber formations. It was pressed into service over France as a pure fighter, heavily outnumbered. 264 Sqn had some success, others less so. It achieved good results as the first multi-crewed, radar equipped night fighter, filling the role during the BoB until better-equipped twin-engined aircraft were developed. The Defiant was a good aircraft, but in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong mission.
The Defiant was known by its crews as "Daffy", I often wonder how good the Defiant would have been if they had ditched the turret and fitted 8 forward-firing machine guns the prototype was as fast as the first Hurricanes and nearly as fast as the first Spitfires. On the 29th May 1940 Defiants shot down more aircraft in a single day than any other type during the Battle of Britain. A tactic was developed during Dunkirk whereby the squadron flew in a defensive circle to allow all aircraft to allow devasting firepower but during the BoB this idea was dropped and the aircraft was flown in Vic formation which we know was almost useless in an air battle the RAF's Hurricanes and Spitfires found this to their cost too. The Defiant was fitted with radar and was used as a night fighter until 1942, during the Blitz the Defiant was the RAF's most successful night fighter, they were phased out of this role and by 1943 Defiants were given new roles assisting in search and rescue carrying underwing dinghies, and as target tugs and gunnery practise for bomber crews. Some Defiants became the first electronic warfare countermeasures aircraft helping bomber forces look smaller or larger than they were and jamming enemy radar systems. The last operational use of the Defiant was in India. A Defiant was still in use until 1948 as an airframe to test the first Martin Baker ejector seat. 1064 Defiants were built in some 7 different variants. The Defiant was used by Australia, India, Canada, Poland, Britain, and the USA. I would call that a successful aircraft. Only one aircraft of this type remains and can be seen at RAF Cosford.
@biltongbru I can´t be sure, but the most successful squadron was the 264th but I do know that during two patrols over Dunkirk in May, 29th 1940 they shot down a total of 37(!) German planes, so that´s my best guess. As for the crew, I do not know...
Two of the more unsuccessful designs in the Battle of Britain. The Defiant and the 110 were both failures in the roles they were designed for. Later, both found work as night fighters. Great video.
But this depiction of Bf 110 shooting down Defiants like turkeys is pretty ridiculous. Their top speed was almost identical but the Defiant's manoeuvrability was far better while Bf 110 got heavy (for the time) firepower in the nose. To me at one-to-one, chances would be slightly favorable for Bf 110, but not like in this video. 1 Bf 110 would go in serious trouble trying to fight 6 Defiants .
I read somewhere they were looking at adding some, but by then they were just being used for night duty. I think just one gun in each wing would have been enough, if only to stop it being attacked from the front.
The plan for a 'stop-gap' fighter involved the remaining Defiants having their turret (and second crew position) removed, and being fitted with four machine guns in the wings... but the real Battle of Britain shortage was one of pilots, not planes, so this wasn't pursued.
Defiant, best 1918 fighter of WW2, called Defiant because it defied description. Most Lufwaffe pilots pissed themselves laughing when they came up against it.
manmonkee yes, but still the defiant, even though with strong engines, the daffy would hang behind them, making them an easy target. I think they should fly without the hurricanes, as a night fighter.

This is such bollocks. It'd take more than one Bf 110 to bring down so many Defiants. The facts are that a well flown Defiant with a good gunner rarely had problems dealing with a 110. There is a couple of other problems with this clip. Operationally the takeoff procedure for Defiants was as follows: the gunner always turned the turret with guns aligned to the front next to the cockpit hood and the fairings were raised. Forward facing was the best position in the event of a forced landing. If the gunner was thrown forward his safety harness reduced injury and a crash pad on the gunnery console reduced head injury risk. Flying with the fairings lowered dramatically increased drag. The fairings were usually lowered and locked in combat but switched to automatic at other times meaning the fairings raised and lowered as the turret was rotated.
This particular 110 looks like a C/D sub variant. It’s armaments: 2x20mm MGFF canons in nose, 4x7.92mm MG17 in nose and 1xMG15 flexible mount for the Bordfunker(radio man).
