Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.
The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

Lyrics:
That's the one, oi
How did he not find the baggy with his hand in my shoe?
Way too close for me, oh well, at least they allowed me through
Should be a good night in here, rammo in the main room
People keep pushing me though, no reception on the phone
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
They said they'd be here, they said, they said in the corner
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
These look well speckly, a bit green and blue
Freeze is well cheap though, so I'll take three if I need to
Right, I'm on a plan, I wish the bouncers would go away
Borrow water off this man, here goes nothing, okay
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
Oh, that's proper rank, that tastes like hairspray
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
I hate coming to the entrance just to get bars on my phone
You have no new messages, so why haven't they phoned?
Menu, write message, "So where are you and Simone?"
Send message, Dan's number, "Where have they gone?"
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
Why's the message pending? Where the fuck are ya?
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
Hmm, brandy or beer? Water's a good idea
I wish that bar lady'd appear and come serve over here
Where the fuck could they be? Still not over in the corner
This night's a tragedy, I keep thinking I saw her
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
No, that's not them, that's not them either
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
I'm still not feeling anything, this has got to be a dud
It's been ages since I necked it, I smoked six tabs to the nub
Belly's not even tingling, I just feel a bit pissed
No-one looks like mingling, I can't see her or him
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
I'm gonna do another I think, yeah, one more, these are shit
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
These toilets are a piss take, queue's bigger than the door
Gotta get rid of this pill taste, what are they chatting so much for?
Glad I'm not a girl in this place, they'll be here 'til dawn
Sure my belly's tingling a bit, something's happening, I'm sure
And I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
Maybe I shouldn't have done the second one
I feel all fidgety and warm
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
Whoa, everything in the room's spinning, I think I'm gonna fall down
My heart's beating too quick, I'm fucking tripping out
I wonder whether they got in? Turned away, no doubt
Who cares? This is a tune coming in, that one noise is like
I'm thinking
Lights are blinding my eyes
My eyes are rolling back, I'm rubbing my thighs with my hand
And I'm thinking
People pushing by, then walking off into the night
Yeah, yeah, they cheer, can they see my hand in the air?
I need to wave 'em over here, I swear Simone's kissing Dan
My head's twisted severe, body is rushing everywhere
They could have texted me when they were near, but I'm fucked and I don't care
Lights are blinding my eyes
What was I thinking about? Ah, who cares, I'm mashed
People pushing by, and walking off into the night
Totally fucked, can't hardly fucking stand
This is fucking amazing
The Streets captures English melancholy so well. Never melodramatic or self-pitying. Just subtle, wounded, but still finding a reason to move through life.

‘And I’m thinking’ - pure classic.
This album was , is and will always be an under unappreciated masterpiece , it has bitter sweet memories for me , it reminds me of my eldest son who sadly is no longer with us , his life at the time this album came out was mirrored by this album , the story , the concept , the ups and downs of life for a young man , we used to listen to it together , we would laugh , joke , take stock and give each other a knowing look , I wanted him to stop fucking about and get on track , he didn't want to grow up and just fuck about , his light is always going to be blinding to me , bittersweet memories ... The light that shines the brightest burns half as long ..and he shone so very brightly
What a terrible loss. My son is just 3, can't even imagine how painful it must be to lose your son.

The sadness and regret in his voice when he says "maybe I shouldn't have done the second one" is SO real. Outstanding delivery.

Hey big UK music fan here so don't get me wrong. But as a central european from a postcommunist country (I am Czech) I always found it so ridiculous that people were so overdressed for an average almost white trash party. Likes aren't as important as views. 15 million is a lot of views for a UK group. This song was popular in the UK.
This song was more appealing to UK audiences as he uses his accent in his music. So they were popular in their own country.
You shouldn't worry about likes because most people don't rate videos after watching. It has 107k likes as of now but they mean nothing to you. It only matters for the channel.
I disagree with calling this song underrated as that word is often misused. This song was played everywhere when it came out. That's not what you call underrated.
I know songs that don't even get 1 million views on UA-cam. So it's not unpopular.
@@SorceressWitch I'm just talking relatively. Glad I never got into it, it was huge in my area in the states back in the 00s, “dirt cheap, plentiful, and high quality” according to everyone I knew. Now that I’m getting older I’m so glad I was straight edge and didn’t touch any substances, as you get older it’s terrifying to see people you know whom didn’t stop or couldn’t stop with the dope and drink…..those that are still alive anyways.
No track has ever captured the feeling of coming up hard on a pill like this. I can almost feel my pupils dilate when it all breaks down. The Nero mix takes it to a whole other level (which I still think was the inflection point where Dubstep launched into the mainstream and it still sounded like Dubstep not brostep).
It describes the whole process:
1. Being annoyed about pills not working
2. Anxiety rising about some personal stuff
3. Popping some extra
4. Feeling the peak coming up
5. Panic about the peak that's coming to hard
6. Happiness
Describes the peak perfectly
This song will never get old, that's for sure.

The streets got the beat absolutely spot on to what you hear when you’re coming up, this song always make me smile and reminisce, every word of it’s so true, it’s all MDMA now but you can’t beat a Mitsubishi turbo back in the day.😂😂standing at the bar then all of a sudden rushing and feeling it all coming up. Blindin, blinded by the lights.🫠
Still coming up from this from 10yrs ago and amshing the Garry's!
Legendary chune for the rest of the 90s kids here.
Much love x
One of the best artist I've ever heard has an emotion I can't quite explained it's like real and raw
First heard this when it came out all them years ago and it still hits me the same way it did back then!! An absolutely fantastic tune and all time classic 🙌🏻
This song makes me feel uneasy. Like I've done something I shouldn't and can't get out of it. Just have to push through.
I've never done ecstacy or gone to anywhere like what they describe but the lyrics are amazing
Yeah, that's exactly what it can feel like sometimes, especially if you get tired of waiting for the first one to kick in, then you take another one, and then suddenly, you're absolutely mashed, but you can't go back. LOL
I’m 56 and still here and deeper meaning. Sound track to many people lives. Mike street poet. Genius for real
Original pirate material and a grand don't come for free have been on my hip since they were released.
A total masterpiece from start to finish.
5 lat tego szukałem . Nareszcie się udało 😍😍😍
Trzeba było pisać. Cały album to jest kozak
👌👌
nutka z filmu pt ślepnąć od świateł :D polecam
Ja pamietam to od zawsze 😉
Pozdro
Jest taki program shazam co wyszukuje ze słuchu muzyki , trzeba było go użyć przy filmie ślepnąć od świateł
“Have you listened to Blinding lights yet?”
“Yeah, been listing to it for years!”
“By the weekend?”
“No, by the streets!”
Yes!!!!
Someone who knows
The weekend are crap compared to the streets
The streets are top notch and always will be in my gods honest opinion even my old aunty likes the streets
Blinded by the lights lol
When I listen the current music bullshit with songs that have no essence, message, or wont be remembered i think how lucky I was to hear masterpieces like this and be born on this era. The streets is probably one of the finest groups, that you listen to, and fill nor just your ears, but also your SOUL. Brings so much great memories of my times in Irland, and how one of my best friends showed me their music that stuck with me until today. One of the greatests, period.
Dawg if you think current music is shit then u ain’t looking in the right places dude
Such a clever tune way ahead of its time
Spot on Paul.
Nah, very much of its time.
No it was not ahead of its time at all as it was very much of its time. I should know ,I was there!
@@jimjiminyjaroo300 Exactly, only someone who wasn't there would say such a stupid thing.
Mid 40’s and this tune , the streets & lyrics really were part of our sub culture , still hits the same every time I hear it , Oct 2023
one of the best songs ever perfectly encapsulates the era
So many nights like this. So many. Love to all the other commoners ❤️
Still a banger. No other song encapsulates the rave culture better lyrically. So relatable.
15 yrs ago every weekend look's like that for me, priceless memories from time when life wasn't so complicated like today. KOZACKI kawałek pozdro
Ok now I’m in a throwback rabbit hole. Was listening to Skiny Man then Ruff Sqwad, now I’m here… nostalgia u know…
Yo big up skinny man!!
This whole album is amazing. Give it a chance if you haven’t heard it all yet!
brilliant tune, every time I find it again I can’t stop listening. reminds me of all my ‘good times’. Which I’m still in. It gets me all excited for my next raves/festivals, love it.
This randomly popped up in my Spotify playlist, haven't popped E in 20 years but got goosebumps just listening how he describes his journey
If you haven't had one before. This is as close as it feels. This vibe plus constant joy.
Always think of Kidulthood when I hear this, by far the best tune The Streets ever made.

ITS 3 SETS OF 5/8 AND 1 SET OF 6/8 ITS AMAZING!
Top to bottom just a great track - the euphoria in the beat, the emotion in the lyrics, it just paints it so perfectly. If you know you know
For sure!
