We could go as far to call the temple complexes of ancient Mesopotamia to be the first universities, I guess there will always be a debate about that, since the concept of what even is a university as well as the concept of what science and knowledge is has changed a lot in time. You make it sound like the Iberian Union was an accord between two equals, when it was, in fact, the consequence of a dynastic crisis. Portugal ran out of legitimate suitors to the crown until the one with the strongest claim was Filipe, already the king of Spain. Although a union in name, Portuguese interests were severely overlooked and our resources and military were used to further increase Spain's power, lifting it to the status of the biggest empire ever, while our own empire dwindled due to lack of enough resources and military power to keep it. After 60 years, the Portuguese once again fought and succeeded in being fully autonomous but the damage done was already too big and opened the doors to England, and even the Dutch, taking over some parts of the world that were once under Portuguese influence (emphasis on influence, since Portugal never tried to actually conquer and rule India, China or Indonesia).
Well, Spain also knows that story under the Habsburg's crown. Decent rulers overall but focused on their interests in the Netherlands and Central Europe more related to Austria.

Oldest univeristies in each country, both in the world's top 10 oldest univeristies:
University of Coimbra (1290) vs University of Salamanca (1218)
Nice. And the oldest university in the world, the University of al-Qarawiyyin, is in nearby Morocco.
@@iammrbeat It's a bit debatable since our modern conception of university is closer to the university of Bologna in 1088 rather than the al-Qarawiyyin between the IX and XIth century.
We could go as far to call the temple complexes of ancient Mesopotamia to be the first universities, I guess there will always be a debate about that, since the concept of what even is a university as well as the concept of what science and knowledge is has changed a lot in time.
Even since quite recent times like the early twentieth century remember we used to think phrenology was a respectable science back then instead of the quackery that it is.

After 60 years, the Portuguese once again fought and succeeded in being fully autonomous but the damage done was already too big and opened the doors to England, and even the Dutch, taking over some parts of the world that were once under Portuguese influence (emphasis on influence, since Portugal never tried to actually conquer and rule India, China or Indonesia).
this. finally someone mentioned this, thank god.
@@hugosenshida999 I'm afraid I'm not God but you're welcome! 😁
well said!
Well, Spain also knows that story under the Habsburg's crown. Decent rulers overall but focused on their interests in the Netherlands and Central Europe more related to Austria.
XofHope : Let me add this, the 1640 Restoration happened because the year before a Catalan uprising broke out , tying the hands of King Philip. So, we made Madrid choose, Lisbon or Barcelona. For our sake, they chose Barcelona. We owe a blood debt to the Catalan people .
7:50 Portugal's cost of living is lower than Spain's, that was just straight up wrong information. Good video though.
Also Fado was terribly mispronounced at 8:50

I'm from Spain too. The Procesión de los ataúdes is in a village of Pontevedra. Once a year the people that was near the death or superated a disease do a "Procesión" with that people inside caskets. It's a traditional
walk. (Si eres español supongo que sabrás que es una procesión)
