- Batman: Arkham Shadow reviewed by Dan Stapleton on Meta Quest 3.
Batman: Arkham Shadow does an admirable job of adapting almost everything I love about the Arkham series to work in a full-fledged VR game, and it’s impressive looking for a game that’s exclusive to the standalone Meta Quest 3 headset. There are a few hitches and aggravating bugs that mean some parts don’t work quite as well as others, but its vigorous brawling, exploration, tricky puzzle solving, and stealth are all in full effect as you sneak and punch your way through Blackgate prison in a twisting undercover pursuit of a mysterious cult leader where just about everybody’s a suspect. It’s certainly smaller in scale than any full game since Arkham Asylum, but it’s far larger and more built-out than you might expect after Batman: Arkham VR, and a return to an enclosed prison setting makes it feel dense and intricate.
it's not as interactive as Half Life Alyx, but it's a proper damn Arkham game in VR!! should've been a 9/10

@@pelvispresley22 did you post a review? Have you finished it?
@@heavyartillery-qm5hu The bugs have been fixed in a Day 1 patch. Anything else like losing tracking is a hardware limitation of the Quest 3/3S and basically means your playing area is too dark
definitley more of a game than half life alyx
@@pelvispresley22 IGN won't give anything a grade higher than an 8 unless it's been vetted by the fans first. They actually have very middling opinions on things. They're afraid to rock the boat u less it's Microsoft.
Just a heads up, but the example used at 5:41 is clearly user error. To grab an enemy you have to thrust your hands towards them without pressing any of the grip buttons. In the video, you clearly press the grip button which causes batman to ball up his fists in preparation for a punch. So actually, that is a pretty good example of the controls being consistent.
Agreed
This did annoy me a bit in the review, I have done it myself but got used to it and it is a skill issue
Game journalists, am I right? 😂
I wanted to write the same thing :P
Average IGN reviewer, thinks that the game has a flaw but in reality they don't know how to play the games. I have like 4 hours in this game and never had a problem with that grab mechanic.
For a videogame I agree with 8, for a VR game though its a 10.
VR is an amazing technology but the softwares and games shouldn't be sugar goated for being a vr so there should not be 2 separated rating score.
Vr games are better than normal games though, so it should be the other way around
@@coolertuep VR in general is far better than your typical physical screens. You can do 10,000,000 times more and its potential has only been reached 2%. Comparable to the computer in the 1970th

can we get over this 'gimmick' terminology already. VR hasn't been a gimmick since boneworks and alyx released years ago. The issue has been content and affordability since then, not the form factor
If you release a product centered around the idea of delivering one unique, particular kind of experience, and the issues with said product lie within basic, bare minimum fundamentals of “content” and “affordability”, you are quite literally describing a gimmick.
@@someoneelse5209one????????
Unfortunately. As good as those experiences are. And I have played Vr extensively. It just doesn’t appeal to the masses. At least not at the current price points. End of the day. People don’t like wearing goggles/headsets to game. Just as they didn’t like wearing 3D glasses in cinemas or at home.
I agree that they’re certainly not a gimmick, but for now at least, they’re still very niche. And the ROI is far too low
@@someoneelse5209if you think VR games only deliver one experience you don’t know much about VR games.
@@AlexanderTCardosi VR games deliver a virtual experience that can’t be replicated by any other relevant gaming platform. Yes, that’s a singular general experience. I’m not saying VR isn’t nuanced, or not multi-faceted, so let’s not be pretentious and kid ourselves.
If this game has made you VR-curious, but you're worried that there won't be anything else to play once you're through breaking people's jaws while dressed as a nocturnal flying rodent, you'll be pleased to know that the Quest is 100% compatible with SteamVR! If you have a gaming PC (mid-range is fine!) you can play EVERYTHING that the $1000 Valve Index can, including Half-Life: Alyx! And you can do it wirelessly, the Valve Index can't do that!
Ive been waiting for an Index 2 but i couldnt wait anylonger, i just got my quest 3 this week and its perfect. Even if you dont like the company that makes it. Also the cable requirement on the index killed it for me. Alyx, Vertigo, and Minigolf are all top tier
Notice the only complaints are about bugs and not the game itself, once fully patched and polished you will only experience this game for the masterpiece that this game is.
the patch is out now
Too bad it’s on VR
@@SlightlyTired the only reason that it exists at all is because it’s a VR game. It was created by one of Metas first party studios Camouflaj, they pitched the idea not the other way around.

@@SeriousDragonify well the bigs couldn’t be ignored lol before the patch that just went live, people had some pretty horrible issues
They solved the biggest challenge in VR, making a truly fun and engaging fighting system, this alone makes this game a 10/10
The thought put into the hand to hand combat is just remarkable. Very hopeful for future VR titles.
the simple way they alert you with an icon to counter attacks from behind is genius. And targeting any and flying a punch across the room, feels decidedly like the classic games.
Now, I've been playing VR for a long while now and know fully well how physically demanding VR melee combat feels. Even so I was drenched in sweat trying to get to the courthouse yesterday. I can only imagine my fellow old PlayStation pals that kept just pushing buttons on a sofa all these years trying to pull a 30-hit combo...
Triangle Strategy in a few days will be a nice change of pace...
I can clear out a room in predator mode in about 30 seconds..clearly a skill issue for this reviewer.
I’d say this is def VR game of the year except we still have Behemoth, Metro, and Alien releasing before the end of the year. VR gamers eating good right now.
8/10 BEFORE the hotfix patch that's coming in a few days. If they would have rolled out that patch day 1 like they promised, it would be an easy 9/10. Edit: The patch is out as of a couple hours ago.

"Retro flatlanders" haha the idea of VR is wayyyy older than gaming itself. And the tech is there 30+ years. Its just not very good in practice. Can we stop saying the Joker reveal in Arkham Origins was bad? The Arkham series is literally about the relationship between Batman and the Joker, and Origins is literally about the Origin of that relationship. It mades total sense.
The "Arkham series is literally about their relationship" thing is technically true, but also more of a retroactive view based on how the games ultimately have turned out than something that was ever stated to be their intention with the series from the get-go.
Arkham City clearly positioned Hugo Strange as the main antagonist of that game, but because they had little interest or imagination with that character, just fell for the easy "fall back on Joker" for the finale & they undermined him twice. First by Ra's Al Ghul, then by having the big finale focus on Joker.
Then the same happened with Arkham Origins, a game (that while I think is very good) WB Montreal almost entirely took the safe route with and had plot- gameplay sections even taken out from Arkham City. They marketed Black Mask, a mob villain, as the main antagonist in an early years Batman story where often the focus is on gangsters, corrupt officials & cops. As well as 8 assassins who've taken his bounty to take down Batman all in one night. A plot that gets sidetracked midway through so they could fall on Joker again (rather than just introduce him on the side) & reveal he was behind everything. So he can be the final boss & the sing to us in the game credits....again
This game proves that an Arkham game can have other dynamics besides Batman - Joker
I don’t think Joker being Black Mask is bad but it’s complicated
On one hand, the story is far more interesting with the Joker thanks to some great writing & characterization
On the other….. it does feel annoying that Joker yet again is the big main villain of an Arkham game
@@LEVIticusPHENOMif the joker model was a little more sinister or Ledger like i dont think i would have minded the overuse, but he wasnt 😂
No. It was bad. The Arkham series is literally not about the relationship between Batman and Joker. The Arkham games was about the other side of the coin that was Arkham. The premise behind Origins was amazing; black mask hiring six assassins to take out Batman was undone by that Joker reveal because the original premise then went nowhere. Heck, half of the assassins were side missions.
VR is not in 2016 anymore, lots of good stuff already and more announced coming soon
When you look at the whining you typically see in the comments section of VR videos, it's clear a lot of people think it's still 2016.
I just finished this game. I got my quest 3 about 2 weeks ago and been playing a little every day also making sure i find all the items and radios in the game and man im blown away... i never played batman games especially since i own a xbox im also more of a marvel guy but this game felt amazing it felt like a console game and didnt feel like an arcade style of game. This game coming with the quest is a great deal. 👍
I can not fathom how this game could be rated anything less than 9/10. My only complaint so far is, that i could be a little less linear. Other than that it’s an absolute masterpiece!
The first time i used the cape to glide across a gap, freaking insane. How doesn’t that make you feel like batman himself?
Even the cutscenes are of outstanding quality. The last time i had my mind blown this much by a game was ages ago.
Buying a Quest 3 for Batman Arkham Shadows alone is worth it in my opinion. This is the future of VR. Totally immersive, smooth gameplay and crazy addictive!
First game on par with Half Life Alyx. Even though the approach on overall interactivity is more arcade like in Batman.
8/10 is rediculous, this game is clearly at least a 9/10 personally 10/10
Lol it’s his own opinion just as yours is 10/10, and guess what? Neither are more right 😂
8/10 is high af my guy
With the games that IGN gives 9/10 nowadays, this one is is easily 10/10 if we're measuring by the same yardstick
Your spelling of ridiculous is rediculous.
I have it an 8. It’s not better than The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners to me, Asgards Wrath, Iron Man VR opening scene when you’re saving the plane ✈️, Resident Evil Games in VR, or the fight against Darth Vader in Vader Immortal.
Got this game for free with my Quest 3S and it is one of my favorite games in VR now. Was not expecting this to be as good as it and I was pleasantly surprised.
This game has been an easy 9 for me, I am playing it and it feels way better than this review says and I AM NOT EVEN A BATMAN FAN.
how the hell did asgard’s wrath get a 10 and this didn’t? asgards wrath was alright and a glorified dungeon crawler with a desert to cross in between repetitive dungeons
you know that's not true. AW2 feels exactly like God of War VR. But I agree Arkham Shadow is an easy 10 too... go figure
@@VRnamek major cap. Asgards wrath is NOTHING like GOW. You must work for meta 😂
Just finished this game… I LOVED IT!!! 5 out of 5!!! To think we said “Oh no 😰” when we heard it was a VR game, we were ALL WRONG!!! lol 😂
Put respect on VR. It has some phenomenal titles and has become more accessible (though I'm too dirt poor to be among them).
It’s time to accept that VR will never be “affordable”. It is its own medium at this point and people waiting to jump in cause they want an $100 headset are fooling themselves. The game library is obviously significantly smaller because of the medium itself. If you want to experience VR, you’re gonna have to understand that it’s an investment and you should treat it like you would any other console: look up its games, see if there are enough your are interested in out and in the pipeline, and then purchase based off that.
VR is not, and never was, an add-on. It’s a console
$295 is cheaper than any console. When it was $800 plus a $2000 gaming PC I used to hear all the comments about when it was going to be under $1000 to play VR.
Now with millions of gamers paying over $1500 for a graphics card that is way overpowered for what they need. VR is the lowest priced gaming system. Even less than your phone.
Even a Quest 2 for $300 offered a lot more than anything else more expensive except Quest 3/3s of course
@@laartwork This. People always whine about "VR is too expensive!" which means at either they think game consoles are also too expensive, or they think it's still 2016 and VR headsets still cost $1000.
Just finished the game. It was awesome.
Im one of the only 12 people who bought a psvr2. This game would’ve been the perfect reason to actually hook it up again… im still mad at sony for how they handled the headset. Its like it doesn’t even exist anymore smh
What are you talking about? There's literally like 10 big games coming out soon... Metro awakening, behemoth, aces of thunder, wanderer, arken age, tin hearts, and a bunch of others... people these days forget games take time to make... not to mention the PC adapter just came out... And that's coming from someone who has a q3 and 4080 for PCVR... I still play my PSVR 2 all the time, and GT7 never gets old.
@@duppypixels I get what you mean. I feel like they do this to anything other than the main consoles. PSVita support was also cut off too soon.
@@islandintheskybut Sony released it with no marketing. They have no faith in it and don't want to invest anymore in it. I am in the industry and can confirm that is all true. Meta has to pay developers to make games.
We need all gamers to get on board and stop saying it's expensive ( no graphics cards are) it's a gimmick, it's only got tech demos, graphics are simple. None of these are true but people have been saying it for so long they believe it and refuse to let go of those beliefs. Yes we need more AAA titles from big developers but it's a business for them. They need to see an ROI

the fact that they took it easy with the combat system means they didn't want people to feel nauseous; the free flow combat where batman would fly across the room to land a hit on an enemy has been replaced by a combo combat instead, which is good.

Quest is a kick ass VR device with some kick ass games. More "next gen" than ps5 will ever be but because gamers are sheep and loyal to old brands like sony it wont get the recognition it deserves. These gamers surely will be buying the next PS6, PS7 and PS8 , even when the only thing it offers is marginally better graphics. But spending 300 to 500 on a true next gen VR device is too much. Modern gaming is in a sad state.
Exactly. VR have problems with motion sickness, foggy screens, and bad headstrap design but the positives out weight the problems like you're living in a different dimension.

I just can’t take IGN seriously anymore. You guys are honestly saying it’s harder for you to do the every day movements you been doing since you’ve been able to walk. If that’s the case, you may have bigger problems. Every movement in this game is a 100% completely natural movement. The game never ask you to do something awkward, or something you wouldn’t do in real life.
You can't be new to a IGN review, these people literally review games like they have zero experience at all.
The game is at least 9/10
IGN just can’t make a good review to save their life. They make so many backhanded compliments in this. Like they just couldn’t resist doing the tropes of a Batman Arkham game, like it’s a Arkham game what did you want.
And I hate how they got the same guy who review Origins and Knight. Absolutely hate his voice and how unenthuciastic he is when reviewing.
Yeah, that classic "indifferent yet smug" critic inflection criticizing anything that's expected of a movie or game as if there shouldn't be Arkham setpieces or references & everything has to be new & unexpected.
Which if they had done so, they'd be complaining it's too divergent of the Arkham experience in an effort try to be new & different.
Or even the part about still looking silly while playing from the perspective of another person but it still being a lot fun, feels like another backhand compliment.

VR definitely is not a gimmick!
It's hard for us old time pancake players cuz I love those games too.
The reality is, technology always moves forward and headsets will get smaller as chips get smaller and graphics better.
The next generation of gamers will be saying remember when you had to have real monitors to watch the game instead of being part of it. And the only way you could play the game is to go wherever you put your monitor, and you had a separate cell phone in your pocket. It will all be on one device kind of like a pair of sunglasses! We will never stop technology
Imagine if first person shooter started in VR with motion controllers 30 years before they introduce fps in flatscreen with mouse and keyboard, no one would want to play that way or tried once then go back to vr😂
