As a Scots/Irish/German Texan I can say that Latino contribution to Texas culture goes beyond words. I wish that there were more appreciation for Latino/Mexican culture among the whites. If I were from Northern Mexico I would head straight for Texas in order to make a living for my family as well.
Music of the borderlands is something truly unique. Love huasteco, conjunto, norteño, Banda. Irish/German heritage with a love for Mexican culture, music, history. Viva Flaco ❤️
Like mexicans and people from other countries today- In exchange for performing vital labor that feeds us, building cities, innovating industry, my Irish ancestors were given unsavory names, low wages, and poor treatment by mainstream society. They also brought with them a steadfast culture and way of life that has sculpted the US in a similar way that we are seeing today, with immigrants from the southern border.
I grew up with Valerio Sr. and Jr. My dad played Bajo Sexto with Valerio in the 50's. He wrote and recorded with Valerio. Miss them both. Albert Cano Jose Cano Son
I heard some of the songs that my brother used to dance to when we would go to El Rancho Chavana in Laredo, Texas for Easter. He was a big time dancer. I was just in elementary school. Beautiful memories of my childhood.
Many Longoria's have great music talent and here is one of the greatest. Valerio Longoria, and this video tells of the German influence on this wonderful Mexican music.
the germans might have brought the accordion with them from the mother country but the mexicans sure have used it to there benefit and have taken an instrument and made it there own for sure.the music of the texas /mexico border towns is some of my favorite .every style is so beautiful to hear from ranchera and other styles of music throughout mexico.
Super nice video of the history of conjunto music in Texas. Good job Professor Juan Tejada. Tejano Conjunto music came from the German & Polish Texans. Also, Conjunto Music before Norteño music. Remember Conjunto music is made 100% n the USA!
You do know that Norteño has been played in Mexico for a long time even before 1910 there was all ready accordion players playing polkas in Nuevo León like Antonio tanguma
My estimates with all respect .. before affirming something, you have to know a little history of Mexico because the first town and foundation of León, today the state of Nuevo León ... we all know that the first settlements of foreigners who arrived in Mexico were Europeans. .Spain mainly but also came Poles ... and Jews who lived first in Spain and went to the new world by the inquisition with their own customs ... The point is that in this region of Mexico is where the settlement of Europeans prevailed and was Stronger so it is so that in the northern states of Mexico their typical dances are polka redoba and chotis ... Therefore the first Texans were mestizo Mexicans too ... Greetings and I hope we understand the origin, the rest was the evolution of music in different regions
@CocoNL Part of the program by Kinky Friedman presenting all kinds of Texas music. This is the Valerio episode, there is no more Valerio on that program
Where did you get this video? I've got some songs of Valerio from the same concert that I will soon upload to my UA-cam account. Valerio Longoria has been one of the most influencial musicians ever in Tejano music.
I went to school with two sisters by the last name of Longoria in Carrizo Springs, Texas they were my best friends till I moved to California, I sure used to miss them> Wonder if they are related?
the music that was familiar, was introduce by the spaniards, but you must add the contribution of the wide variadad of cultures in the americas. the instruments of great use were the string instruments, wind instruments the accordion was used but of choice until the early 1900, the harmonica was greatly used, the acordion was used from the 1930 (diatonic type). the germans were not exclussive to the music .
I'm hearing the Accordionist play La Bamba on a Box with 3 Reeds per Note instead of the usual 2 Piccolo Reeds per Note. Can anyone tell me how this Acordeon is Reeded ? Gracias.
It has 2 reeds per note as the Hohner Corona II is designed that way. It has 1 clarinet and 1 piccolo reed per note (tuned in octave). The reed blocks have been modified to accommodate the smaller reeds.
hola sr.
Kinky Friedman hosted/narrated a documentary called "Texas Saturday Night". I have a little on my youtube page. I hope to have more uploaded. Right now I have Jerry Jeff Walker.
That was a really 'Grande' ( almost 4 hours !!!! ) documentary of the 'ARENA' series , hosted by the BBC in the 80-ies , still have most of it on ( gruelling !! ) VHS
Jorge Marquez : IT IS NOT DON ANTONIO TANGUMA / If you can prove norteno music is the real accordion music and not conjunto. Then I will remove all of my comments supporting conjunto music because I will not support something that is not true. But, if you cannot prove norteno to be the real musical genre of the accordion, then that will make norteno invalid, and it makes norteno a lie.
@gwokerism Conjunto music came way before the " Johnny come lately" Tejano music. How can you compare Santiago Jimenez Sr.'s music to Ram Ramirez music? I'm 81 and Conjunto was already an established "dirt floor" music in the Valley. I believe Tejano became popular in the late 50's.

+R J Molina If you say conjunto is made in USA, why do they play mexican instrument (bajo sexto) and pieces composed in Mexico (La Bamba)?
Because there are mexicans in the USA. You realize it used to be a mexican territory right?

Banda sounds like carnival music
Los Tucanes Del Norte and Ramon Ayala started modern Norteño music after Narcisco and Santiago formed conjunto.
