I also just bought my 3rd. I had bought the GW5000U as my “ultimate” G Shock. But then I went even further and bought the GMWB5000 the full metal square. Last month I bought the 1/2 metal G Shock. It is like a combination of both watches. I think I might have a problem. 🤭
The most correct header I have seen in a while on a UA-cam video, I recently found the 1st watch I ever bought for myself back in the late 80's, it was a Casio digital 50m watch & looked just like that one, I used it as a daily wear for years & as it was waterproof so I rarely took it off. Skip ahead a few decades & I was going through an old junk draw recently, you all know the one lol, & found this sad battered looking little lump of black plastic, the band had rotted away & it looked pretty rough. I was about to bin it when I was overcome with a bout of nostalgia so opened it up to see if I could just replace the battery, amazingly I had one & blow me if the little Casio didn't come back to life, I now have it hung beside my computer desk as an easy time/date check & a reminder of a never say die watch. Well that's it, I thought people here might be interested in my musings on my classic casio.
I understand the argument about the "premium" feeling of the screwback, but I still prefer the smaller profile of the 5610. On the other hand, I'm completely fine with the white LED backlight.
Yes, the 5610u is a great watch when you don’t even notice you are wearing it. For almost the opposite reason, with the 5000u (though not nearly as bulky as the all metal ones) one enjoys it because it has just enough noticeable heft to feel its stealthy quality.
I own both because I bought the 5610 before I knew about the 5000. So I already owned the 5610, bought the 5000 a year or so later and was completely underwhelmed. It's the exact same. Different colors, maybe a touch heavier. You can't even feel the weight difference on the wrist. I guess I was expecting more, which I don't know why I would. But honestly, I'd just buy whichever one I thought looked the best now. Or if I didn't have much money, I'd just stick with the 5610. I do wear them both. I doubt anyone ever actually notices.
The screw back cases are really nice on the squares. I have the 35th Anniversary Origin Gold DW5035D1B modeled after the 1983 DW-5000C-1B with the gold text on the bezel. Beautiful watch and mich more premium feeling with the stainless core.
@@PradeepsPointofView had one but it was still too big for my wrist so I sold it. Strap too long and had excess sticking out and personally don’t like that in my watches.
The GW5000U is fantastic. Ive been collecting for many years from G-shock to higher end Swiss and at least in my case, if I could only have one watch under 1k for life, the GW5000 would be it,

Good mini review Watch Geek. All good points. To paraphrase Johnny Cash (although he was talking about Martin guitars): “ I feel safe with a G-Shock square”. So, I ended up with 3 of them for different occasions. The GW 5000u as the “everything watch”; the 5610u as the “Happy Beater” with its bright, Bauhausian design touches. It is also super light so a great watch for training, outdoor and messy stuff. Finally there’s the GMW B5000 full black metal with the negative, STN display. Understated dress watch for social or more formal occasions. That way, I never have to leave “G-Shock world” - or even the operational muscle memory familiarity of the same 3495 module in each of them. The majority wrist time winner would be the GW 5000u though. Great watch if you “get” it. Maybe I (and my wallet) are fortunate in that the luxury automatic watch market holds no hypnotic appeal to me as it strangely does for many. In fact, with just my G-Shocks I may own too many with these three but at least it’s a guilt-free, affordable pleasure.
Good comment. I love G-Shocks, although I only have one, a Rangrman GW-9400-1 which I love and use most of the time. I'm thinking about getting the 5000U as a more discrete, less bulky and a low profile watch I can wear anywhere. The steel body with the screw down case and steel lugs and softer rubber is what will be the deciding factor for me.
@@adsagp A good choice. I used to own a big G Shock too (in my case, a Mudmaster). I find the 'u' series squares much more practical while having all the functionality I need in a watch. They also will fit with long sleeves better too. :-)
My GW-5000U is my favorite square. I got one as soon as they came out and it’s pretty perfect. But could you imagine a GW-5000U with titanium case and sapphire crystal? It would be absolute perfection. Come on Casio make it happen! Can’t wait for the long term review.
Yes but Casio purposefully gimp these models to push people toward their full steel/MRG line. They won't give the consumer what they want, they're professionals at dodging perfection.
I totally agree...I have had up to ten G-Shocks at any one time including the G9000 Mudman, the GW6900, the Gulfman, the Riseman and three Casioaks and in truth, I am now down to 8, which includes my new GW5000u and I find myself really liking it the most (I also have the GW5610u, which I really like too and which has the same module as the DW5000u!). Something about the weight, the strap's softness and the face being so much more elegant looking...Just love it. I am now contemplating selling off some of the other Gs, which kinda makes me feel a bit sad but maybe I just need the One to Rule Them All? I may even be turning into a 'normal' person ?? 😁😁
I'm happy with the GMW5610u & GW6900. Both are excellent watches. For the meantime de GW5000u its a bit pricy. I like the screw back case. I'll be on the look out for a discount. Regards.
Watch Geek, A good companion video to this one would be your review from Oct 25, 2017 where you compared the GW-5000, the GW-M5610, and the GW-S5600. In your words, you compared the GW-5000 to the Porsche 911 Turbo, the GW-S5600 to the Porsche 911 GT2RS, and the GW-M5610 to the Porsche 911 GT. Those were good analogies.
I agree ! I have a GW 5000 that is the earlier model and do love the premium feel of the strap . It is quite noticeable if you wear a regular square even if it's a screwback. The fact that it's also maintenance-free is a big plus, but i to do like the anniversary squares with the simple 1545 and 3421 modules! I also still use a 5600c 'speed' watch that is from 1988 and also a screwback but much less refined than the current ones.
The GW-5000U does seem like the ideal square: perfect colorway and execution and features and construction, without the all-metal case/bezel distractions of recent years. I have 4 squares, none as exotic as these, however all are special examples for me and I do always favor the solar + MB6 when possible. The irony of owning a non-MB6 model is that they effectively keep worse time than a simple, cheap mechanical. Why do I say that? Because a mechanical will stop, and you set the time when you wear it next month, and that's that, whereas a cheap quartz is off by some minutes after several months and always requires a sequence of button pushing to get it back on correct time. I bought my son one of the Bluetooth squares a few years ago and it's great, but no one actually gives a shit about Bluetooth or goes into their phone for settings unless forced to. I think it's a shame the BT models do not also have MB6.
That's strange. The GWB5600 models have MB6 and Bluetooth. Are there more Bluetooth squares than those? A MB6 emulator app makes MB6 watch time sync anywhere in the world that you can get internet connection. I often use the Android app to quickly change things like alarms and timer settings, and set world time cities. It's handy when various sporting events are happening around the world.
About mechanical/automatic watches. I have automatic and when I go to sleep I leave it in box in normal position, like that it loses 1 sec per day. And when I put it on side with crown up then it gains few sec, when I put it on side with crown down then loses few sec. Doing that I can always keep precise time in seconds and I never need to manually adjust time anymore, means it will never stop working.
@@NaviNavi-1uu8tg Hmm, "never?" I think you mean until it needs adjustment/cleaning/repair. I have several mechanical watches. In a sense, they are more convenient than quartz watches because there's no battery needing replacement. I've had GW-5610U for 1,5 years, my only gshock and I don't need another, it's perfect for me. I don't like BT connectivity, I find radio controlled time more "fascinating" :D + It's lightweight and cheap enough so I'm not so afraid of damaging it.
@Baruch-Hashem Ikr, smartwatches are mainly for soulless losers who lack class, integrity, and taste. I've already encountered one such loser on this comments section, who basically thinks we should all ditch real watches and buy overrated smartwatches.
Hello I have the GW-M5610U which have the same module, the only difference the case isn't stainless steel screwed back. But I love the 80-90's look that it show with the red label and the color text. I change the rubber bezel for a metal one, metal adapters and green fabric strap so for me and in summer time it's super confortable and I have a bezel that will last the same as the watch! It was really difficult choose between it and the GW-5000U!
My only watch is g640wb-1bef, and it's the best watch ever, small and elegant. Not a fan of bulky watches. It's a nod to vintage Casio, but is a completely new watch. And orange lit numerals on black background are a chefs kiss, reminds me of those vintage texas instruments calculators LEDs like TI-30 which I used to have, it's a delight to look at.
There’s also the GW-B5600. It has all of these functions and more; Bluetooth! And the combie bracelet. Its almost perfect if not for the negative screen though
@@folksurvivalFor me, i don’t live near the zones or towers that the watch adjust its time to. So if i want to adjust the time, i simply press one button from the watch and it connects to my phone’s bluetooth and automatically corrects the time, location, day, date, month and everything. That’s why its more convenient to have bluetooth than the multi band function, that’s without mentioning the other functions that you can do from your phone into your watch.
Nice video! You did a great job in presenting the GW-5000u-1, this would be an awesome watch to get. I'm seriously contemplating getting this one as I would be a nice and much slimmer profile than my current Rangeman GW-9400-1. I appreciate the extra quality with the screw-down DLC back case and the more subtle/softer rubber and has all the minimum features I would want from a G-Shock.
Have a 5610 with a combi bracelet.....does all i need don't need the date to show while in countdown mode.....don't need a heavy screw down back ......mine has 4 screws that hold the back just fine....
I just got the gw-m5610-1er this week and do like it a lot, mostly thanks to the new module. I have had my DW6900-1 for 4 years now (after seeing your review on it, I bought one from a store in Japan) and it's still my favorite g shocks ever. However, now that I am seeing your video on this one... I might want to try it out. It's like an end-game g shock that is still affordable. Perhaps putting it on a black metal bracelet will be cool. Thanks for another great video!
Always wanted to have a G-Shock and last week in a mall I saw the 40th anniversary limited edition DW5040 which looks nearly identical to the very first G-Shock. Although it’s a bit over priced for it’s functions nowadays, I bought it anyway as my first G-Shock because of its reminiscence to the original one. Really love all the extra details like the champagne sunburst dial, the gold plated inner case, the recrystallised screw back, buckle and ring. Just one issue, its 40th anniversary logo on the screw back is a bit different from other anniversary editions like 25th, 35th and so on. It is not embossed and looks like painted or laser engraved. If it is painted, I don’t wanna ruin the paint in a few months with my sweat because i live in a hot dusty country.
I bought a standard DW5600 and was really disappointed at how small the digits were, of all watches id think a Gshock would have digits the size of at least a 217, I felt cheated considering the $40 price
I love the 5000u and it may be my next G-Shock. I already have the GW-S5600 and GW-5610, can you say where you got the gold text bezel I've been looking everywhere and failed to find one

I never understood why people go with the gw5000u over the gmwb5000. Because the gwmb5000 is far superior in every aspect. Why do I need screw back when it’s lion charging - never open for a battery change or not
I'm wearing GW-5000-1JF for about 10 years daily. Sometimes I'm thinking about another daily driver. What do you think about MRGB5000?
have my GW-5000-1JF for nearly 5 years. haven't found a suitable replacement yet. i use it everyday. battery has _always_ been at H. had to replace the rubbers once cause they got streched from all the sauna sessions.love it!
A few weeks ago strap on y watch cracked so badly that I had to remove the case completely. also I found a rusted bolt - was removed with pliers. after 10 years I'm a bit bored of G's. So, probably I'd try Instinct 2 Solar Tactical because it's black @@nxxxxzn
Simply the best G-SHOCK. I love mine....I don't need any others!!!
I've had GW-5610U for 1,5 years, my only gshock and I don't need another, it's perfect for me. I don't like BT connectivity, I find radio controlled time more "fascinating" :D + It's lightweight and cheap enough so I'm not so afraid of damaging it.
Atomic, I do not want to connect to my phone - it leads to the eveil incarnate - the smart watch. I want the 5000U
Got mine on a Combi and use it everyday. Amazing.
Well the GW-M5600/5610BC also had a combi. The GW-B5600BC-1 has positive display and combi.
Why would anyone want Bluetooth on their watch?
@@folksurvivalFor me, i don’t live near the zones or towers that the watch adjust its time to. So if i want to adjust the time, i simply press one button from the watch and it connects to my phone’s bluetooth and automatically corrects the time, location, day, date, month and everything. That’s why its more convenient to have bluetooth than the multi band function, that’s without mentioning the other functions that you can do from your phone into your watch.
Does this fit any different compared to the 5610? I have the 5610U and it's always either too loose or too tight
Is the band length the same for the gw5000u and the less expensive 5610?
I do have the DW-5610U. Best option to have.
All 3 of them display or does it have a Lap counter?
Have a 5610 with a combi bracelet.....does all i need don't need the date to show while in countdown mode.....don't need a heavy screw down back ......mine has 4 screws that hold the back just fine....
Since my GW5000 arrived i did not replace the GMW5610U that used to wear...now i wear BOTH watches at same time !! I'm G-shock mental ???😅
Thanks for another great video!
does the 5610u also have the time displayed in the timer?
Las estrellas de 5 puntas que tiene grabadas pueden ser satánicas siempre hay alguna invertida
Comes with negative display?
Nope, but the GW-M5610U does.
THE best G, love it, thanks for the great video, you summed it up, perfectly!
I have the GW5000 and the GW5000U and I prefer the 5000 mostly due to the EL backlight.
Great review! It's nice to have a few that represent the evolution of squares! Tempted to get the H5600 for that MIP display.
Great upload, thank you and this is the next one on my purchase list to add to my Casio collection 👍
That 25th anniversary you have is absolutely magnificent. Grail watch status.
Postao sam opsjednut satovima, obolio… 🤣
I never understood why people go with the gw5000u over the gmwb5000. Because the gwmb5000 is far superior in every aspect. Not only it’s a screw back as well but it has a stn display and the lug pin for the strap is not a flimsy pin like the 5000u but it’s like a thick pole lol that you could never break. And the modular is also superior and did I mention about the Bluetooth? I know some people don’t like but then my answer is to that is then you don’t have to use it and can easily will switch to using multiband 6. And the bezel is black metal which will never deform over the years of using it. I hope you guys will reply and tell me what your thoughts and excuses are :)
I agree that gmw-b5000g-1 (half metal, black bezel, positive display) is much better than GW5000U, but where to get it..? :(
Cool informative vid thanks, also I was not aware of screwbacks
Love my U. Have it in an oem combi and some bull bars. The only square I never sold. Keep up the great work!
Same here.
Gen2 combi, might put on some bull bars..
Even the wife likes it.
Always enjoy your videos 👍
Miss my old gw5000. This is the next collection to look for
I live in Belgium and in winter the solar battery drains every year, there’s not enough sun per day between October and March… very annoying
Hmm, I live in London and own quite a few G-Shock solars. Rarely have a problem with them losing charge over winter..
Just love my 5000U-1er quality is superb and it's so comfortable on my small wrist , I have also stealth black Casioak ..a very beautiful watch but it diggs into my wrist , only if they made it like the 5000u
Thank you for making the review for this model I adore il.😃
Nice review. Have you ever heard of anyone having to replace a tough solar module's batt?
Yes I have. Pretty easy...alot are ctl1616... rechargeable ones
Hello, could you please teach us how we can mod the g-shock's letter bezels to a different color, like what you did with the DW-500SL? Thanks!
I got a different variant bezel, I didn't paint it myself.
Just removed the stock one and put the one from another model
I love this watch! I hope I can have this ,,,,someday!!!
Man those GW5000's are sure nice!
Do you have any plans on getting the new GW9500 Mudman when it releases? A review/tutorial video would be awesome!
Are the latest two square acquisitions long term keepers?
Great clear review. I love this model!
Hi Watch Geek,
Is there a solar version without the radio option?
Yes there is a solar version without the radio controlled options that is the G-5600b that one is only solar
If you really want, you can turn off radio reception....
I have the GW-M5610 and thinking to pick this... and I don't know why lol
Fantastic Mod on that “Spike Lee” version. Simple and effective.
G-Shock should have followed your lead ! 😃👍🏼
Thanks for sharing!
The 5610u's Backlight is much more durable and can take much more activations before it no longer works. The downside is that it's less pretty
Nothing beats the OG 5600
G-5600UE-1DR Showing 3495 in watch display while on back its shows 3496 as module number.. is it original or fake??
Hey can you tell me Casio gshock DW5600 UE - 1DR has atomic timekeeping?? As i see RCVD in the screen when i tilt in daylight though Multi band 6 is not mentioned in dial
I think you're talking about the G-5600UE. It does not have the atomic time keeping but uses the same screen as the rest of the solar square line.
Please i need some good ruged watch with Barometar whit can show me weather thanks
Is this 5000 watch bigger than the gwm5610u?
Yes, slightly longer in length and narrower in width, making it more "square" than the GWM5610
I just bought a GW-5000U-1ER.
It’s my 5th watch, the 1st
g chock, and the 2nd watch I bought in a week.
I must have a problem, lol
I’ve always loved squares. The design is a true icon in it’s own right.
So it was a choice between 5610U, 5000U, and B5000D.
To me refined ergonomics are totally worth the premium over 5610U. Full metal B5000D just didn’t appeal to me.
Your 3495 module tutorial video was a great help setting up the watch.
It came with Tokyo as the home timezone. A nice touch for a watch made in Japan.
Someone experienced problems with light button? Seems like more time passes and less return you have pressing it.
Did not had this problem with 5610.
I love my 500u. I want the h5600 though.
5000U
What is this bayee or bahyee you talk about?
It's in the description, a proxy service Buyee that helps foreigners buy things from Japan
@@WatchGeek excuse me, and I thank you for taking the time to explain.
Enjoyed the review 👍
I really need that
What would be the average pice of the 5000?
My first G-Shock was a GWM5610-1ER. My only other G-Shock is a GW-5000U-1JF. I’m waiting for a MIPS display offering without the step counter / heart monitor: that will be my third
How many watches do you plan on wearing @ one time??
@@jebstuart3 The usual, just one watch
It has improved specifications but lacks the charm of the 5610 for me, and the EL back light. I won't be swapping
Looks fantastic on a combi bracelet.
I'd like to point out that, actually, the "old school" about light would be a little bulb light on the side of the display
Is this GW 5000 U - 1 CR ?
The DW-H5600 has more legible text IMO. I have G--5600E and now that I have bifocal, it takes me occasionally more than a glance to be able to read.
I have the most basic model of U's the 5600UE i need to complete the 3U 😅😅
As some onw who owns a 9400 Rangeman in yellow/black plus a g-5600 ue-1 solar. I don't see the need for this one.
Just get a 5610U it costs half and you are good
Doesn’t feel premium, this is a tank.
@@e28forever30till as tough as a tank lol. Looks exactly the same other than slight graphical difference lol
Thanks forthe Review
I love my 5610 U, if I didn't have it I would get the 5000
Greetings from Frankfurt/Germany
