- RIP Alex... Alex Chilton & Jody Stephens performing as Big Star in this 1994 appearance on network television with Jon Auer & Ken Stringfellow of the Posies. Awesome... this clip includes intro & outro from the genial TV host.
WELL DAMN JACKIE, I CANT CONTROL THE WEATHER!
Thank you for this.
Great line. Out ice fishing right. Can remember that episode
Just finished watching this episode when I saw this comment 😂
This was Big Star's only network appearance. Alex knew this was it, and he nailed it...the guitar solo...everything.
#AlexChilton was on JUL 10 1995

@@lahipster3172 That was not a Big Star appearance; that was an Alex Chilton solo gig.
Incredible guitarist. Love the way he plays
@@danielstoddart I guess you weren't listening to Leno's introduction.
I saw him live around this time! Janus Landing, St. Pete. Never forget it!!
I never travel far without a little Big Star...
What's that song?
@@painiscupcake5433 "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements :)
@@painiscupcake5433 I'm in love
With that song
@@satanholes Aaaarh...aye.
Alex Chilton was a rock star since 1967 and beyond
The band that never got to be. If it weren't for these cats, we wouldn't have some of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time. Period.
he never got the fame, he deserved
He never tried for it.
Terry Stanton he had a taste of fame and that's all he really wanted. Alex embraced obscurity
yersweety well that 70s show
@@terrystanton6420 I think that’s a misconception…. Every single songwriter desires fame in the form of attention and recognition. Some may SAY that they don’t care about fame or this and that… then why record and release music?
Because it’s all about the music? Then why release it and promote it, etc…
We want people to hear our music because every songwriter thinks they’re gods gift to the world.
Alex was definitely one of them.
Wrong.
All music geeks and bands and djs knew of him by 1984.
The inscrutable Alex Chilton. Really on the mark here -- looks as if he is about to give a big sigh of relief just when Leno comes over, like "Whew! I got through it!" Anyway, I'm going through an intense Big Star phase, including the film, the book, "Cosmos".... Great to see this moment of grace.
Their story would make a compelling movie if it was done right !!!
Ben Poore For now I'll take "Nothing Can Hurt Me". I really am delving into Big Star now because of it.
Mike Gervasi I'm biased, but I think it's the best documentary out there !! (When Your Strange, a close 2nd) It rekindled my passion for the band as #1 Record and Radio City are always being played in some form. It just made me think of the movie Control, about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. The story of Big Story is amazing, it has a Hollywood script, yet it's organic because it's how it happened.
Inscrutable is right! I was fortunate enough to see them in London in the mid-Nineties. They came on to a rapturous reception, but did they ride that wave of emotion into a blistering opening of In The Street? No, they all remained awkwardly in position while Alex stood in front of his amp with his back to the audience, strumming the same chord over and over and singing "Whoa-oh", trying to get...SOMETHING right, for a full three or four minutes! With practically anyone else it would have been infuriating, but with Alex it was part of the process, and it was an honour just to be there watching him do it.
@@Dermot2927 Love it! Happy to got to absorb that :)
This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen Alex do. The band sounded amazing too. 😄
“the band” is jon and ken from The Posies! no offense to Jody the drummer!
They sound bored
Alex was truly one of the greats of Rock 'n' Roll.
Big Star are American legends!!!! What a band!!!!
Happy heavenly 70th birthday Alex 🎈. Thanks for the awesome music 💥
Alex is such an underrated guitar player
Leno didn't even look at Alex when he shook his hand. He looked down then he said "Thanks" while looking at the camera. Maybe he couldn't handle how beautiful Alex's eyes were.
I've always been into music and I can't believe I never heard of these guys until recently..... 2023! I like them. I used to like that song September Gurls by the Bangles..... I didn't know they were not the originators of that song.
Alex's talent seems effortless, he has a real natural musical charisma.
I totally agree. There's an innocence to him and a joy. You can tell that he is loving every second of it. Or it appears that way. He is always smiling. It's pretty endearing and refreshing.
I've probably already told this story, but on the night this was supposed to be on t.v. Alex was also booked to play with the Boxtops somewhere down the Jersey Shore. I set the VCR to tape this and set off to see the Boxtops live on the beach... it was a free show with other oldies acts... I got there and parked my car and went up to the boardwalk to see The Boxtops... they had already played. I went home and Big Star was not on my VCR tape! So I missed BOTH in the same night! AWESOME!
That sucks! I would've had a fit if I went to see him live and missed it. I'm hoping the upcoming Alex Chilton documentary has footage from the Box Tops/ Big Star shows in the 60s/70s.
Tragic. That sucks. Alex would be 70 today. Memphis music rules 👍💖
LOL!
Man, Chilton really said, "let's mess with this guy all night!" Haha - cool that you can laugh at it now.
Ray Davies book Americana brought me here. Will be exploring the work of Alex Chilton more moving forward. Wow this is good.
The drummer is awesome.
Hello Wisconsin!
Jody Stephens' drum fills - awesome!
Jody is such a monster drummer.
See, some idiots around here will criticize Alex's voice on the record, but notice how different the tone of his voice is here. The tone on the record is perfect for cutting through the mix, and suited his age at the time, but notice how much more vocal cover he's using live. I honestly think he was checked out from performing by the time the 90s rolled around, and the cameras finally started rolling on them. He was an incredibly astute musician, but it feels like he pulled his punches sometimes, maybe out of bitterness, or simple exhaustion. I don't know, but Alex was so effortlessly talented, so it seems tragic that he didn't throw himself out there more. At once, he seemed so content just being with the music, but also like he yearned for the recognition Big Star deserved. He's clearly put so much effort into rehearsing this performance, but his sadness at knowing this is his one shot, and so far after the fact, is palpable. They were truly the best pop band of the 70s, but I don't know that they believed it.
Chris Bell sings it on the record that’s why it sounds different
RIP the great Alex Chilton.
I had no idea Big Star wrote this track and I'm from Memphis. Damn.
Better late than never!
Thank you for posting this. Such a rare chance to see the two originals live. Kudos to the whole band.
My pleasure!
Alex Chilton, one in a million! RIP
What a leap from Box Tops to this asymmetric sound. Innovation at its best.
Guitar, drums and vocals - the perfect pop/rock song!
awesome, Alex Chilton Rocks
This is one of my favorite TV performances ever. Just wish the volume was higher on this clip. "Not a thing to do but talk to you". Love.
I saw them that night at the House of Blues in Hollywood
Good to see Alex and Ed Koch working together again.
Jesus Christ Jody Stephens is a fucking incredible drummer
He also looks like he’s 30. Just saw the movie and that was in 2012 and he still looks maybe 40 in that....somethings up here
@AntacidChain
Jesus Christ is the name of a great song which Alex Chilton wrote for the 3rd Bid Star album; a song of praise to be sure and beautiful as well.
But please don’t use his name when you get excited about something as this is blasphemous.
@@richieboy6825 He takes care of himself.
Jody= Effortless brilliance.
God these guys were good.
This is absolutely amazing. Thanks so much for posting
Axl Chitlin + Ed Koch = entertainment gold
I saw these guys play in Tampa in the 80’s
God Jody rocks!
Thanks for this!
Love this song for it's clever use of the ghost D in the hook.
Alex Chilton is greatly missed....
I think Chilton may be Stephen Malkmus' dad.
boatbutter haha, you are right!
Except malkmus sucks ass at singing
Wellllll……
Jody was smokin in that take
Wow the theme song to 'that 70s show'! NICE
The creator must have loved big star because they also used big stars “13” on the finale
Still wish Alex was here :((
Great guitar Alex!
I never knew it was a Big Star song used as intro to the 70s Show. Cool!
Nice they sang the infamous couplet: "Wish we had/A joint so bad", which was NOT used on "That 70s Show".
Thank you Alex.
Such a good band.
Tears of joy.
It'd be wasted on me, but still, awesome to know it's out there!
Perfect Pop!
It'd probably be wasted on me, but still, awesome to know it's out there!
Ed Koch # 1 Alex Chilton fan!
On fire!!!!!
I LOVE ALEX CHILTON
Alex was so talented. Poor bastard. R.i.p.
It'd be wasted on me because I couldn't do with it what it deserves, but still, awesome to know it's out there!
Rick and Robin are in the audience watching how to do this song when they cover it.
I think I've seen a better live performance of this song but it was badly recorded. I've seen Alex play a better solo for this song. He's a good guitarist. He's better than what we see here. This song never fails to make me feel good. It's a young person's song, a 20 something reflecting recent memories growing up.. However it's now being played here by a middle aged man. One of the revival band members said Big Star at this time was Alex Chilton playing his bad teenage poetry. But Alex was grateful to be making a living as a musician even if it meant playing "been there done that" before an audience hungry for that old magic. Someone else notices Alex exhale at the end of this as if exclaiming I've just survived just barely playing this old chestnut yet another time. He's no longer with us. And it's too sad.
@Seattle Rinis - that's a brilliant assessment of what occurred with this song and this performance. And somehow, Chilton went even further back in time with the song Thirteen.
For real, he looks like eric forman with 50yo
It's so great, right!?
or saul goodman from breaking bad lol
This was originally broadcast around Halloween time - thus the skull and skeleton and fall colors of the set.
HOLY CRAP!!!! i never knew this song was done before That 70's Show. wow!
Class act. Tight mother fuckers!!! Effortless rock and roll.
amazing!
About half of these views are mine. Hard to find a lot of live video of Chilton where he just kills it
Look up #teenagebandClub band from #Scottland backing up #AlexChilton
wheeeee!!!!
NBC Tonite Show with Jay Leno, of course
Yeah, think it was the night before Halloween.
What year? Had to be early 90's right after Carson retired, Leno looks young as hell and rocking the long hair yet.
Seth Thomas Halloween 1994. I still have my vhs tape from that night!
he pounds that drums doesn't he?
Fabio Ximenez AMEN!
"....and Susan Powter!"
I never knew this was a Big Star song!!!!!!!!
HELLO WISCONSIN!!!
You think Jay Leno even knew Alex Chilton was the singer of the Box Tops before that and they had one of the biggest hits of the 1960's (The Letter) which was later covered by Joe Cocker?
Leno was actually hipper than he looks. I remember one time he had John Cale on, and he told Cale that he had seen the VU at the Boston Tea Party club during the 60s.
Yes you music snob
Only good thing that Leno's Tonight Show ever did, but of Leno seemed not to realize it.
Can only wonder what could've been if bell stayed. Not to diss radio city or third but I liked the Lennon-McCartney thing they had goin on
what guitar does the rhythm guitarist use ? its some weird fender with pearl inlays? wtg
+chrisp1987 I think It's a Rivera, but I'm not sure.
thank you
That would be a 60’s fender Coronado in rare Antigua !
Alex Chilton or Soul Goodman?
Falling asleep with a flop pop video on
Who’s the backup band?
Alex's voice is nice. I think it was a throw away lead part. He would have served the song better by not trying to improvise. But these are small complaints getting to hear these pros knock it out.
That 70's show
Anyone here because of That 70s Show?
I’m certain there are a few…
An octoburn...
I wonder where Cheap Trick got their act from?
Jay Leno clueless as usual. Dave knew and loved the music.
Leno was actually hipper than most people know. He saw the Velvets at the Boston Tea Party in the 60s. When he took over the Tonight show he had on the Ramones, Motorhead, John Cale......
@@christophervaldez8746 There's being hip, and then there's hangin' around.
HELLO WISCONSIN!
Wisco. SUCKS!
Better call Saul
Isnt it University of Missouri, not Missouri University? Cmon Jay dont ruin it for these guys!
You're correct but they titled the album "Columbia: Live at Missouri University" when it was released in 1993. In the late 70s and early 80s, I worked at our campus radio station, KCOU. Alex would come up to play our Springfest at The Blue Note with a makeshift band (or solo) back then and he developed a fondness for Columbia. We loved him back.
Nonplussed Alex Chilton... How apropos for him to be holding the skeleton at the end... Chris Bell? Big Star the missing link? Duh. It seems that Big Star comes in waves. First peaking here 20 years ago... I guess we are now due for yet another comet flyby soon.
Man, Ken must not play bass much--not that he sounds bad, but good lord he's concentrating on the instrument
He's usually a guitarist (for The Posies)
Connor Ashenton Oh, I know. But any comment that reminds people of the Posies is a good thing, so I'm not complaining. Frosting on the Beater is one of my favourite albums of all time.
several comments about “the band” tell u they dont know that the great ken and jon are from The Posies. Has a lot to do with why he sounds so great here! No offense to the orig band members btw.
KELSO STYLE!
Ken needs longer pants.
Newsflash: Leno was NEVER important (c'mon, be realistic) but Big Star always will be.
The missing link between the rutles and
Great performance, only slightly ruined by the repulsive toad who invades the stage at the end.
0/10 for chilton not dressing like count dracula (with fangs) for halloween
Leno is the blandest host imaginable. That intro seemed perfunctory. I'm glad he's gone.
