Lea's version in the 1989 rehearsal is the best. You can see it on the documentary "The making of Miss Saigon". I also think all the songs she sang in the rehearsals are the best versions, including her solo of "Movie In My Mind" which is normally sang as a duet with Gigi. And her version of Sun and Moon with Schoenberg at the piano became a classic.
LEA'S version was the clearest...the best!
She was straining *a lot* there. Her 2000 Manila Production singing is better. So much support and space.
Lea's version, unequaled ,I love them both, Symon Bowman and Lea Salonga, they both have created the best chemistry for the role, I regret they did not fall in love in real life.
Lea is not only the original manila cast. She is the original Kim.
FUN FACT: Did you know that Annette Cauld is Eva Noblezada's Aunt? She was in the Ensemble and understudied Kim in the original Broadway cast and then later took over as Kim fulltime when Lea Salonga left. She later went on to appear as Celina the dance teacher on Sesame Street. It runs in the family. So cool to see Annette now be a proud aunt to Eva who wowed West End audiences in the recent 25th Anniversary revival (that was filmed) and now about to be in the same Theatre where she was.

But I'm so glad to hear Caselyn Francisco's voice. I knew that she really wanted to be part of the musical and was happy for her when she joined the German production. This is the first time I heard her sing in German.

@Betsy Haze , correction for Ms. Lea Salonga (11:12). She is the original Kim at the 1989 London cast (not original Manila cast 2000) who subsequently won Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical at the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World awards for the same role. :)

Do you really think the editor would leave a glaring mistake like that in the video (as that would be)? Check your facts before making corrections
The clip shown was the 2000 Manila staging with Lea Salonga as Kim. She was in the original cast of THAT production.
When Lea sings, you will hear the words clearly. The others tend to garble the words, especially when the notes are hard to hit. Good enunciation is needed as well as hitting the notes with expression.

Definitely! I saw her in the current UK tour as she's now principal Kim and her voice was captivating along with her haunting facial expressions.
Saw Jennifer Paz performance in 1995, also met Deede Lyn Magno at a local bookstore promotional performance for the Play. Then around 96 met Monique Wilson in concert at local university. Of course the love of my life is Lea Salonga lol

You’re probably right.
One of German versions here sounds higher.
They lowered it a full step down shortly after the OLCR was recorded. The only other production to use the original key was the original Stuttgart/German production.
I think the key change was done especially for Lea since it must’ve contributed to her almost losing her voice; she was belting her lungs out eight times a week!

Eva's vocals are just INSANE. Unparalleled. Even by Lea. Their voices are just so different. Lea's voice is gorgeous, but it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of raw power that Eva's has.
Not really. Salonga has the perfect balance of vocal power and restraint needed for Kim. Eva simply attacks the songs as if she were doing karaoke. If you want to talk simply about raw power, Rachelle Ann Go beats Eva Noblezada tenfold.
Eva's voice just sounds thicker. it's not more powerful. Besides, it doesn't matter if it's more powerful or not than any of the other Kims. What matters is whether her voice fits the role. (And sorry, hers is not the best fit among most of the Kim actors.)

Hmm, what is this fascination with raw power? What is important is voice control and enunciation so you hear what is being said and Lea does have both and more.
awards are not assurance that you are the best. same goes if you passed the board exam, doesn't mean you are better than those who failed.

You didnt mention nor show Lea salonga as the very first Kim (in the original/ first Miss Saigon in 1989 West End and 1991 Broadway) but instead you showed her performance in 2000 in Manila.
FYI..Lea salong is maybe 29 or 30 years old already in this video comparison while the others are still 18 or 19 or early 20s... so there must be a difference in vocal power as you age... and imagine a 30 year old woman playing a 17 year old girl is maybe a bit hard yet Lea nailed it :-)
Lea is amazing, but it's more of an audio setting as I have noticed in the whole video that no reverb was made unlike the other recordings. Lea's other fanvids are more raw and can catch the reverb of the actual audio.

@Matthew Matousek Yeah. They should not have changed the low note. I like it better when the low notes are sung to show how wide the range is because many cannot hit the low notes. People are just fixated with the high notes.
The only other Kim that dodge the low note was Jenine Desiderio. And mind you, her clip was recorded after they lowered the key a full step down!

Though Eva did a great job, especially her performances when the show transferred on Broadway. She’s also among one of my favorites too!

True, Lea's edge is always her enunciation while singing the hard notes. Hard to do what when you are struggling for breath.
