@@Real-Colossal-Titan2782 I do both at once. If the chord progression is simple (example Kataware doki) I improvise directly because I can somewhat “tell” which chords are coming next. And it usually just repeats. But if my intuition is wrong sometimes, then I’ll find the right chord and remember that part the next time I play. If the chord progressions are not simple (example Kaikai Kitan), I’ll try out the song first for about 10 minutes finding the right chords for each part of the song before actually playing it. Basically I can’t instantly play it. Then if there is a chord that I really don’t know or just sounds wrong, I check online to see what chord it is and then improvise.
