  • This exercise strengthens the muscles in your larynx, which house your vocal cords. It improves airway closure during a swallow and helps to decrease breathiness while talking. Please do not perform this exercise if you have a heart condition or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Take in a breath, let a little out. Hold your breath tightly in your throat while you bear down for a few seconds. Now vocalize “oh” while you are still pushing. Relax. While bearing down, you should feel tightening in your throat, similar to when you lift something heavy. Bearing down can be achieved several ways: pushing on the palms, pulling on the fingers, pushing on the arms of a chair or a table, pulling up on a chair, or if you need a little extra help, use a tennis ball or stress ball between the palms. Repeat 5-10 times as prescribed by your speech therapist

What is the purpose of this exercise? Isn't the valsalva a bad thing to have when talking and singing?

Sunsun DKS no this is called valsalva mechanism therapy. Basically when a stutterer feels a block, that block is basically the valsalva mechanism and this technique is to teach the vocal cords to prepare for speech once the person has done this mechanism rather than locking up and having a block.

Sunsun DKS I should also add that this technique is mainly for vowels. Anybody that’s seeing this message I wouldn’t recommend you do this technique for the whole alphabet, only for the vowel letters. There are different variations for the vowel letters as well.
