The layout works via a series of relays which are triggerd by magnets that are situated in the first coach or wagon which when going over the relay will tell the control pannel that is in the back room of the layout that the train is clear of the section and that the train that is behind it is able to be sent through.Tthe singals give a sign or realism to the main line so when the singal is at red the train cannot procced but when the signal is green then it can. It can also give a sign of when something has got gone correctly, an example being if there are a series of green signals with nothing passing them, then a train has stalled and needs help from the hand of god to get going again. This will normaly set the sequence back up again.
I like that mix of scales on one track, of British and German models - great!

Each one is placed about 30-40 cm in front of the signal I believe

Did I see some sort of 'rat train' go past at one point?
That is Ratty, he is a great figure at the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.
Yeah that’s a famous train there haha.
