You probably won't believe me but, I don't even know man, the feel with which you play guitar is out of this world. I don't even like this style of music, but everytime you upload a snippet of your playing, the lead part just blows me away a 100% of the time
Have you ever done a video on your process of getting guitar tones? That’s something both myself and I think a lot of other people would definitely love to see cause man your tones are killer
I know this is a few years old, but would you mind re-uploading the files? I am trying to decide which CAPI pre to get and this video was recommended on Gearspace.
I wonder which preamp would be best for extreme metal. It would be cool if you could A / B one of the capi pres with a neve style circuit to hear the difference.
The heiders hands down. They are the most aggressive sounding. That’s why all rap and metal vocals go through them. And if I’m going after the very heaviest guitar tones I also use them
Definitely one of my favorite videos you've done. As a fellow guitarist, was great to see you play some notes - great phrasing! 10/10 Guitarist, 10/10 Producer = 20/10 FoSho
Great page! Anyway, we can still download these files? Tried to access the dropbox link but says the files are deleted. Would love to hear the samples! 🙏
I had them for a period of time a couple years ago when this was filmed. They’re great monitors, but didn’t replace my NS-10s Like I was hoping they would
Thanks! If you’re talking about the actual 500 series chassis, I have a video on my channel assembling one. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@ColtCapperrune I have a friend who can build the chassis and 500 modules for me. I've been looking getting a pair of vp28's and bt50's. I'd love to feature them on my channel too. Like I said, capi gear needs more videos!
Thanks so much for your videos! 2 questions for you..... What is the benefit you get by running the Heiders in your mix bus chain? Also, why do you use preamps in your mix bus chain vs no preamps at all? I've wondered this question since you posted your previous video about your racks. I only now mustered up the courage to ask you!
Hey! Thanks for the comment! Honestly that question probably needs to be made into an entire video. The very very short version is it started with me wanting to get most of the benefits of analog summing without buying an additional 16 channel interface, a summing box, and all the cabling to hook it up. What it actually does for me is just add some nice analog color to the entire mix, and I drive them into the red on every song almost, so I get some nice hardware saturation as well. Hope that helps, let me know if you have anymore questions!
@@ColtCapperrune Thank you so much for the response! I assumed that may be your reasoning. Id LOVE to see a video where you talk about this more in detail - along with an A/B test of the pre's in the mix buss, and out of the mix buss - so we can hear the difference. It'd be a great way to show off the mix buss pre technique while also showing off the Heiders! Im sure all of your other viewers would love this as well *hint hint* =) Thanks again for all the great content! You've been a great resource for the community!
Thanks a lot for these great Files and your great work!! I loved the vp312 on Bassdrum and Snare. Which is the exact configuration (transformer and op Amp?) of the vp312 used in the files. I`m considering buying exactly that Version of the vp312. Cheers from Switzerland
I prefer the 312 Heiders and VP26 Platinums out of all the options (for guitars especially). I just DIY built a VP26 and 526 XFMR based on your recommendations, and I'm eyeing off a VP312 (among other optios) for my 6th build. Do you more often (a) record direct into the Apollo and then bounce the tracks out through the pre-amps to get the color you want in editing, or (b) record directly through the pre-amp to get the impedance of the mics hitting the transformers and commit to the sound during the recording process?
Hi Colt! I love your videos. Very practical advice. This pre-amp topic has always been interesting to me. I don't understand why I would want my pre-amps to color my signal when I can always use a pre-amp plugin in my DAW. It makes more sense to me to use a mic pre-amp that is as clean and flat as possible and do everything else in the DAW. I guess certain brand pre-amps are useful in a pro studio since you may know the kind of sound you want as you record which may save time during mixing. I just don't think it makes sense to by anything more expensive than a consumer grade Focusrite Audio Interface for a small studio. I'm Interested in your thoughts...
Hey Colt. Love this video for so many reasons. From getting people into DIY to understanding that you don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get a great piece of gear. I should know as I have a pair of VP28's(Not the platinum). Have you tried swapping out the opamps in yours? I have replaced mine with a JLM opamp with a APP992. And I got to say...WOW. It just does this thing to the audio., It's like it stretchers it out. Extends the low end and brings a clarity that I didn't think was possible to the mids, upper mids, highs. I had to pass this tip on to you cause, I really liked them before but now....Man oh man...Your going to have to pry these out of my dead hands! Bro if you get the chance, try it! Again, thank you for all you work, tips and tricks, and advice in this crazy mixing world. Peace
Hi, I really like the VP312, these midrange frequency ROCK! VP26 or VP28 are great too, but for me they are too muddy compared to VP312. But I agree that VP312 could be agresive for someone. I'm going to buy some CAPI preamps (my first 500 series preamps) and I definately go for VP312, I have Heritage TT73 (1073 style preamp) and I want something for guitar recording. Do you have other experiences when are you using these preamps? If I will buy VP312, is it possible color tracks from my DAW? (mean if I press -20dB switch and compensate the level). Which version of OP-AMPS tested preamps used? And what about transformers, Litz wire? I like the video, good job!
Thank you so much !!!!! My opinion : I found the most APIdish sound looks like is the Flat VP25. 26 and 28 add shiness to the sound and more 3D/openess but sound some times artifical. they works great on solo, giving this excellent presence in the mix. But for guitar layering or for the bass, i would go for the simple 2505, the most natural. The Platinium sound too much for me, too much boosted : i prefer simplicity/basic.
Hello Colt, and thank you for making this video and putting those files for download. I'm trying to decide which CAPI mic Pre Amp I want to go with. They all sounded really great from your tracks I downloaded, though I think I might be leaning towards the 312. If you dont mind me asking, which mic are those Pre Amps connected to? is it just a room mic or is there more stuff going on? (please excuse my un-trained ear)
In terms of sonic characteristics it’s hard to quantify. The platinum’s overall are just a little bigger and more impressive sounding if that makes sense. But the VP 28 DIY is still one of the best preamps out there in my opinion
Honestly man... I've never got the whole API thing or you know... The Capi thing but the way you believe in them I may just pick one up myself to compliment the Neve clone. Which version of the Capi preamps would play good as an option to a Neve style preamp? Something maybe a little cleaner
Hey Colt, just to recap on capi (excuse the pun) you say your mix bus always gets the preamps? To be clear you mean running the preamps as part of your master stereo bus??
That’s correct. On my mix bus during every mix I have a couple plug-ins then it comes out and through the Heiders, to my buss compressor and back in to another couple plugs
I personally haven’t experimented with all the op amps. Generally speaking in my opinion the platinum’s just sound a bit bigger and more “impressive” if that makes any sense. I definitely prefer the platinum ‘s, but the regular VP 28 is a fantastic preamp on its own.
