Great comparison. If you want to do a little more than gravel roads and muddy tracks, and you have to choose from only these two, you go for the Forester all day long. It is a very capable vehicle on and off road.
It is great to see a genuine back-to-back review. Well done - it is very informative. In short.... yes, the Forester is still the best medium SUV off-road. Or at least, it's better than the X-Trail!
Fundamentally disagree with the comments on the rear parking sensor operation. I LOVE that my car is not interrupting my music to prevent me from crashing into something at the back, that is literally my job. I look at the camera and see the sensors working and showing me the distance and that's absolutely how it should be.
Well done Ponch: another comprehensive review . FYI I'd buy the Subaru if I was in that market. I've always regarded Nissan as plodders, but you have changed my outlook.
Can I just say thanks for reviewing cars in lower trim levels. Understand that you included the sport because it matches well against the Ntrek but still it's refreshing. Wish auto reviewers normalised including the other trim levels as a footnote or in the conclusion when evaluating the options available. Unfortunately due to the Forester refresh the current model is out of consideration for me the 2025 model will have so many more safety features.
Bought a 22 Fozzy sport partly due to Poncho’s review of it a while back. Really a bit of a goldilocks spec of this gen, with only the seats and speaker system different from the 2.5S while being 2-3k cheaper!
I’ve owned a few Nissans over the years, here in Canada, and I’ve not been overly impressed with their build quality and reliability. Not their dealership experience. I’ve only owned one Subaru and I’d rather spend my money there instead.
Subaru really missed the mark when they decided to not introduce a XT model. We've held onto our previous generation XT with hopes the new generation will reintroduce the XT.
There’s high hopes for there to be an XT version of the new-gen Forester. The Outback XT has been very successful in Australia which is good incentive for a wider introduction.
Пробачте. Але де OFF-Road Test? Прокатився по пильній дорозі і це все? Може хоч би струмок якийсь знайшов або пагорб, я вже не кажу про діагональне вивішування осей. Рекламний тест-драйв.
Having driven the xTrail, Rav4 and Forester for 1000s of Km I agree that the Forester is the best package, the xTrail has some flash tech but I could not wait to hand the xTrail back, I didn’t like they way if drives. In my opinion if you want the AWD package the Forester is the way to go, full time spare etc and would go 80% of the places I take my Toyota if it was fitted with AT Tyres.
Would love to see more of this. Every SUV with AWD goes pretty hard with the off road/adventure marketing but reviews rarely test how capable they are.
Nice review! Now can we dispence with the 'dated' crap? Not all of us want an ipad on wheels. Practicality, built for purpose, reliability, are what wins. If your buying a car for anything les then hand your licence in.
Subaru is a small-volume brand worldwide, making it difficult for the engineering team to accommodate every type of use. This is understandable. I think it is more appropriate to regard a Subaru car as a special-purpose vehicle, and people who wish to buy a family car should consider another brand. At least, go buying the Outback.
Nissan isn't exactly exempt CVT that had a habit of shitting in its pants conveniently post warranty.Sure may have been fixed but don't want to wait 5 years on to find out
@@richardwalsh5570We shall see. Mines a manual and I’m not keen on any cvt. Not sure what to upgrade to next the foresters been great. Tow a small boat and travel on some 4wd tracks to get to fishing spots but don’t need a big FWD.
Sorry, what repairs? STi and Subaru technician here with a 2016 Forester XT. 177,000kms, tow a small camper trailer frequently, take it off the beaten tracks with all original equipment including the CVT. Look after it and it'll look after you.
The eclipse cross is really a competitior to the quashqai , and subaru xv , the outlander is the true class competitor to the x trail and forester. In which I think the outlander is better than both the xtrail and forester, especially the phev outlander
Forester is such a depressing car to look at. 2025 model looks much better... but something that looks as nice as a Jeep or mini Land Rover while also being reliable seems like a huge gap in the market.
The problem is (to me) there is no direction for Nissan. Their car got no soul no character. Not sure about the rest of country but in where im in, their car models are all below average cars in terms of quality and pricing
"Outdated interior". Let me guess... you like cars with an oversized iPad stuck to the dashboard? With digital instrument panels that have flashy graphics and are highly distracting but convey bugger all useful information?
No go challenge the cars in some rougher terrain and the subaru will driveaway and the nissan will stop in the first sand - plus its renault relaiablity
That head gasket will eventually give in the Subaru. Never again. Never will I own that pos. I've had a Qashqai for the past 9 trouble free years. My 06 350z has been flawless since new.

We do our best! Glad you enjoyed
I have a 2023 Subaru Sport Forester. Love it! Thanks for this review 😸

The Forester sets a high benchmark in terms of off-road capability and the X-Trail still performed admirably.
Nathan you are on your game. Well done. Great review.,

I'd just buy the 2.5i-S just to get the cascade green silica paint job.

Very enjoyable video 💪
However, the X-Trail range-topping Ti-L trim has more options than any fully loaded Subaru or Toyota, with a touch of Lexus/Infinity luxury
X-Trail = city, Forester = away from the city.
Correction, X-Trail T32 and on, city. The older T30/T31 had better 4x4 setup

Smashing review
Shame Subaru OZ never brought in the Wilderness model of both this Forester and Crossover..
Coming next year. Needs a turbo XT version though (doubtful).
Good review as always Jason, like your work - I’m curious why you don’t do your own BD sponsor spiel at the start, like your colleagues 🤙
2:06 around the what?!
😆

Car expert tested them and the forester won
That's because the pavement will be the most offroad the SUVs with AWD will go

Mate, what is the fuel consumption of both car?
did you watch the vid
As tested, 8.8L for the Forester & 9.0L for the X Trail
@@stewbyles8564 horrible
@redwhite_040 most vehicles in this class have that fuel economy, they are heavy suv , but with the xtrail you can opt for the e power x trail
So the answer to the question asked in the description is yes.
Both are sticker packs butvwere its important no change in the eng dept

Don't forget the cost of repairs you will need to spend on the Forester long term,

I believe Eclipse Cross should have been included, excellent value and off road capable.

Thank You
Both are my fav cars
What about the 2024 outlander ?
The phev outlander is superior to both of these.
IMO the Nissan looks a class above the Subaru, more modern and far better looking.
Why don’t you choose Forester Wilderness for this test?
That model is not sold in Australia.
Xtrail looks better though

Not for me
Forester everyday of the week…

This comparison is useless anyway because Subaru Sport is almost a base model and for off-road you should take the Wilderness model
Wilderness models are only available in North America
Where is this place would love to go there, anyone know?
Australia
HART in St Ives
@@tedk-42 no way!
Hey mate looks to be just off the M1 Pacific motorway near Killingworth. Certainly not St Ives.
You know Nissan launched x-trail in India at $62k with 1.5L petrol front wheel drive with some basic features 😂😂😂
Except for the Outback, all Subaru cars look ancient plus a horrible outdated interior.
Yeah Subies are not pretty but give me constant AWD any day.
"Outdated interior". Let me guess... you like cars with an oversized iPad stuck to the dashboard? With digital instrument panels that have flashy graphics and are highly distracting but convey bugger all useful information?
Haha yeah, cheap multi coloured led lights too. Suburu interiors are very upmarket and lusk for their price.
Looks like some Suby fanboys here😄
