    ================================
    Sailing on our catamaran, Tulip, with an amazing crew-Rustam, Valera, Natasha, Volodya, Katya, Kolya, Svetlana, and Armen-and our trusted captain Yura at the helm, we reached Mykonos, the tourist sweetheart of the Cyclades. Mykonos marks the 10th stop on our journey, following Kea, Kythnos, Serifos, Kimolos, Milos, Sifnos, Ios, Paros, and Delos.
    Mykonos, home to around 10,000 residents, is one of Greece’s most beloved islands, attracting over 1.5 million tourists annually. With nearly 700 cruise ships anchoring here every year, this influx has transformed Mykonos into a world-famous destination. But all this popularity comes at a cost.
    The surge in visitors has driven up demand for short-term rentals, causing many landlords to convert local apartments for tourist use. While this brings in higher revenue, it’s pushing longtime residents out of their homes. Locals can’t compete with the prices tourists are willing to pay, displacing families from Mykonos Town and turning it into a seasonal hub instead of a year-round community.
    The island also faces a serious water crisis. Mykonos is naturally arid and has limited freshwater resources, and with so many visitors, drinking water is scarcer than ever. Water is often brought in from the mainland, adding to the environmental footprint and increasing costs for locals.
    Despite these challenges, Mykonos remains a major draw for its stunning beaches, lively nightlife, and iconic Cycladic architecture. Visitors come for the beautiful vistas, historic windmills, and a mix of natural charm and luxury. Mykonos’ history adds to its allure, tracing back to ancient times when it was named after Mykons, a hero linked to the god Apollo. Mythology claims the island’s rocky landscape comes from giants petrified by Zeus. Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influences have left a unique cultural imprint, and in the 20th century, Mykonos became a haven for artists and celebrities.
    So, what’s the solution to Mykonos' challenges? Stricter short-term rental regulations could ease the housing crisis, while investment in sustainable water infrastructure could help the island's fragile resources. Limiting the number of cruise ships per day could also help reduce the strain on Mykonos, preserving its unique charm. Balancing tourism with the needs of Mykonos’ residents is essential to keep the island a vibrant, livable community.
