It's South Africa - they thought anyone with the skin color of a kettle over a wood fire menacingly holding a mango is a threat needing superior firepower.
"Super Auto-Grenade Launcher" I like the sound of that... as long is it can hover in 30kt cross winds, hump it's own ammo, read a map better than an Marine 2nd Lt. (that's not hard to do) and pick up girls while on leave in Johannesburg (from what I've heard that's not that hard to do either).
Interesting concept for a gun: Relatively light 20 mm anti-materiel rifle/grenade launcher with reasonable recoil. Ambush weapon and anti-fire support weapon. It is great to see when someone thinks outside the box for once.
As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, with a lot of crims finally wising up to be being shot through any part of their get away vehicles with the FAL they started installing sheet metal in the doors and walls. Once the crims reach a certain part of their territory, it's no longer safe to pursue on the ground, the light armoring they were giving their vehicles was enough to give them time to get away without being shot. Hand held 40mm or mounted 40 are just not practical enough for urban usage. However, with this weapon, 1 guy can hang out the window of the pursuit vehicle, pop a few rounds into the first vehicle then move straight onto the next and so on, with a high degree of confidence of not only hitting the target but completely eliminating any internal resistance. This is how SA deal with murderous scum.
You could easily give the Neopup airburst capability. You could place a programming muzzle brake on it, which would be connected to a smart scope on the gun that can calculate ballistic trajectory.
@@Patriotgal1 a) SA don't have A10's, b) air strikes cost tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands depending on ammo and craft used c) using aircraft in dense jungle area is next to useless as US discovered in vietnam.
Stormlord “dense jungle area”? There aren’t any jungles in SA, dude. It’s mostly either fynbos, plains, or savanna. Or the mountains. Unless you meant /urban/ jungles, in which case, yeah, air strikes are ineffective anyways.
@ Once again that is stupid because its not like blacks where alowed to develop or build anything and to somehow claim its a European country with a lot of blacks would be saying Brazil is a european country with a lot of lantinas
Space Force yes, but not the US Army. They refuse to buy something that is simple, easy to use and doesn't break down a lot. Not without some modifications first. LOL
William Sager because it isn't *_AMERICAN, f//ck yeah!_* It's the same story as with all NATO equipment. Someone comes up with great design, americans say they want a copy of their own equipement and won't accept anything else then they try to sell their own production to everyone since it's already ready... usually they still lose though. That's why we have .308 and 5.56 instead of just .280 British for example. They can still do a few things on their own if the topic is aircraft and navy. However even creating a good tank is beyond them. They needed to parcitipate in two separate joint projects with british and germans to run away with results and use them to build their own thing. So yeah, Abrams is a great germano-british tank:D
The buffer explanation made perfect sense, and is a fascinating artifact of having such heavy projectiles... It's one of those things you'd never think of until you've already built one, and it's not working as it should. Great solution, and a wonderfully informative review as always, Ian.👍
A standard 100 gram 20mm projectile, at over 300m/s... that's roughly the equivalent recoil of FOUR heavy loads of a 12-gauge shotgun being fired simultaneously. More than the .50BMG. And this weapon only weighs 6kg. On balance, I can see why it would be worth it, those suicide trucks loaded with explosives yet covered in welded-on armour plate, if they have a dead-man-switch then they are going to explode wherever you stop them, that means there's a huge value on destroying them at the maximum possible distance, hopefully outside of the lethal blast radius.
However if such a vehicle is only slightly armored a round that is rated for 6 mm of penetration is going to do absolutely nothing unless you directly hit a weak spot and the shrapnel and explosion will have even less of an effect or armor plating. You easily get 20+ mm penetration on an M2 so you might as well just use it instead. Even most full power .30 cal cartridges get 10+ mm.
If I'm calculating correctly(weight in grams multiplied by speed in km/s), 100g at 310 m/s has less recoil than several different .50 BMG projectiles. And that's without including the propellant- I got the impression that higher muzzle velocities require more of it for the same muzzle energy.
If you watch actual footage you sometimes (often?) see a lot of completely covered windshields with basically a driver's hatch that's impossible to hit at any safe range with something like this. And apart from normal cars, sometimes old Soviet APCs are also converted an you can't hope to combat them with a launcher like this. But yes, I would also assume something like this is much more useful to attack infantry in buildings by just shooting the appropriate walls etc.
This has to be one of the coolest pieces of ordnance I've seen.. An easily portable, shoulder-fired, semiautomatic 20mm cannon.. If I ever was a machinegunner or a DM in a firefight I'd be pretty quickly zeroing on an enemy carrying one of these for sure.. Because once he starts pumpin' those shells at your position youn don't get a chance for a clear shot at him anymore if any for that matter.. Awesome Ian!
The only problem would be carrying the damn thing. Its another 12 pounds or so and having a second weapon slung over armor is such a damn pain let alone actually maneuvering with one. I'd see me plugging it as soon as I tried dropping behind cover.
I agree that thing is a bit of a lump for sure.. I've had my time carrying all sorts of shit on me like SAW's and 24lb anti-tank mines and once you've hauled your ass for about 10 miles you feel pretty much getting rid of your underwear on top of all that gear :D But in an attack situation where it is necessary to put supressive fire against enemy positions there is not much that comes to my mind that would be more practically effective than a couple of guys pumpin' 20mm HE shells at the enemy's face while the rest of the platoon moves forward.
Carson Tait unless you have a dedicated squad member who carries this thing along with a machine pistol such as an Uzi or MP5K as a personal defence weapon
It actually worked tolerably well in Afghanistan field tests, but it was too heavy for a soldier to wield it and a back-up M4. It was also fairly expensive. And of course, being a new weapon, there were some kinks to work out besides these drawbacks, but they canceled the program before solving them.
This is seriously the most awesome thing I've seen in a good while. I hope it gets adopted, or at least gets featured in video games and movies. It's too cool to be entirely forgotten.
I really like the design with the boxy magazine and the whole slightly futuristic look. Six rounds don´t sound that much but everything that takes six small grenades already goes beyond just regular law enforcement. There are not that many grenade launchers like that it seems which is too bad, it´s a cool concept.
I think something like that would work great for swat units. poping six stun 20mm stun granades through the windows of a building from like 50-100m away is something I'm sure would come in usefull.
This seems like an ideal weapon for police/military occupation forces in urban high intensity crime/low intensity warfare environments. Shit like guarding objects in Iraq or busting narcos in favelas. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who made this likes cyberpunk.
1337penguinman south africa is about as violent as a place can get before you start calling it warfare. The requirements of security contractors and police forces are quite a bit different in an environment like that. Just compare the kind of security the wealthier people put on their homes with what their peers in western countries do.
South Africa has a very interesting history and some issues which while not unique are more prevalent than in many other nations. Often the history and issues of a nation shape its weapons.
"This thing does its job when it gets there, and it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, so to speak." ... You slept with it, didn't you Ian? :P
Actually the grenade part is fine, that's why a RPG is called RPG (rocket-propelled grenade), the rocket part is more to "deliver" the grenade faster and add more penetration. Basically what we need is to put gyrojets into these rounds and we have a Bolter.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who tought of that but yeah in military terms it's perfectly valid to called a bolter ammo grenades, tough I suspect "shell" would be more accurate. what makes a rocket a rocket is the delivery system (aka a rocket engine) technically even a missile is a rocket just a guided one.
While that's true about a bolter having gyrojets, that comes with all sorts of issues in regards to accuracy. They still use gunpowder aswell for an initial boost, but that can warp the nozzles, cause even more issues with velocity than the actual gyrojets had, etc. This is a far more stable design that fills the same function. also, it's called RPG because of the Russian acronym: РПГ (literally their letters for R, P, and G) which stands for ручной противотанковый гранатомёт, which means "hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher."
@@EnjoyCocaColaLight it really did have a shape like moose antlers with its weapon systems. Chappie wasn't my favorite niel blomkamp movie but it was still violent and entertaining !!
This weapon seems like it would be very well suited as a squad-level fire support weapon. The US military has been looking for something like this for a long time, be it the marines M32 or the Army's XM25, the PAW seems to overcome a lot of the issues either weapon has. While the M32 is a fine weapon system, the fact that it shoots the very low velocity 40mm means that the user has to carry a carbine with him, else he be defenseless/useless in many situations, which means he has two carry two full size weapons, which is very burdensome. Combine this with the fact that the M32's primitive revolver cylinder, making it very slow to reload, and the soldier is probably better off with their M320. Then there's the XM25. Field testing did yield very positive feedback, but its stuck with two issues. Firstly, it's damn expensive, not only does the weapon have some pretty fancy hardware itself, but the cartridges are very costly too. It also is noted that the user probably does need to carry a carbine with the XM25. The PAW seems to solve these problems. Its lack of heavy optical sight giving it presumably lower weight, and smaller size means that issuing the soldier the PAW and a carbine is a much more viable solution. Further, its higher muzzle velocity compared to both the M32 and XM25, as well as much faster reloading and larger magazine size compared to the two respectively, mean that issuing the soldier a PAW and a pistol is possibly a viable choice.
LeeFerikson, yep I always look at how these weapons affect how much weight you have to hump up hills lol. These days we carry so much I wouldn't be keen carrying another weapon and ammo too. Great idea wounding enemy you suppressed in a trench though making it easier to assault though.
Too bad the US government seems intent on blowing hundreds of billions on overly complex weapon systems like the F-35 and the Littoral Combat ships. They don't want to buy something inexpensive and effective because then the companies like Lockheed can't bribe them anymore and make more money when they get to constantly repair the overly complex system.
Seems like something like this could become a popular gun for video games. It looks really cool and interesting, and it could easily work as an anti-infantry weapon, at least using video game logic.
It's already in video games and other media. At least the "concept" of it. In Warhammer 40k it's called a "Bolter", in the universe there's actually a "Heavy Bolter" that is basically a machine gun type weapon of this kind.
You start with some really acurate and compelling reasons for using this iso the 40mm grenade laucher. In the bush war wcs was walking into ambush. To survive you need to return accurate fire. I can't remember who wielded it, but I distinctly remember it was this weapon because of the position of the pistol grip. Such an obscure weapon to model
I can hear it now. "Fifteen centimeters? That's not so hard. I used to bullseye cane toads back home with my Inkunzi, and they're not much bigger than 15 centimeters."
I think the bigger joke is that it's kind of meant to stop charging suicide vehicles (as in they're charging as bulls would) by blowing their asses up.
Or put two rounds through a window 800m away, accurately. VBIEDsare prime targets, sure. But so are bunkers, helos, and IFVs. You could make a whole mechanized platoon stop, dismount, and take cover with just one magazine. Then use three more to finish the job, as it were... Think of it more like a horizontal arc one man mortar.
@@carbon1255 Did you watch the video at all before you posted? It is literally not possible for a left handed person to shoulder and fire the PAW with their dominant hand.
The buffer system on the magazine is ingenious. What I gathered from what you said is it allows the weight of the mag to be neutral, thus not having an effect on the gun. Kind of like a Neilson Device on a pistol suppressor.

@@maxnaz47 You could call in an A10 strike to "deal with murderous scum". But I doubt it would feel as satisfying. :)
Unless you meant /urban/ jungles, in which case, yeah, air strikes are ineffective anyways.

because it isn't *_AMERICAN, f//ck yeah!_*
It's the same story as with all NATO equipment.
This is literally a space marine boltgun. It just needs some cosmetic modifications.
(strength of 99 required to use this item)
Ian's strength:93
Close enough to wield if he two hands it
The buffer explanation made perfect sense, and is a fascinating artifact of having such heavy projectiles... It's one of those things you'd never think of until you've already built one, and it's not working as it should. Great solution, and a wonderfully informative review as always, Ian.👍
It was a little bit confusing... You have to admit.
I now need to know the effect practice rounds would have on ballistics gel.
For science.
The deformation from the cavity inside collapsing would probably rip the gel
With slow motion so we can see what happens
Sounds like detached retinas might be a concern with this weapon.
What are these made up scenarios? You're all talking out of your ass.
The sight moving independent of the barrel and foregrip is a trip.

3 years ago, this is the video that introduced me to this channel and more or less kickstarted my interest in firearms.
Every Forgotten Weapons video I watch ends with me saying, "Yup. Gonna need me one of them too..."
I think this makes the most sense, like Ian suggested, for the defense of checkpoints and bases - and as an option for vehicle crews.

It actually worked tolerably well in Afghanistan field tests, but it was too heavy for a soldier to wield it and a back-up M4. It was also fairly expensive. Not often we see a functioning, truly different type of firearm these days! Love the pistol grip layout.

"This thing does its job when it gets there, and it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, so to speak."
... You slept with it, didn't you Ian? :P
So this is a real life Bolter rifle?
Yep, first thing i thought. This is an actual Bolter, holy shit.
remember that bolters fire self propelled rounds, so more like rockets, not grenades
Such a cool, clear explanation of the effect of the relative mass of the cartridges on the overall physics of the weapon.

Funny thing:i just did a quick check and the weapon as been around since 1999.
Just googled, I see the M32 was also designed and made in South Africa, by a company called Milkor.
