as a native german speaker I just wanted to give you some feedback: you did amazing honestly and your accent is surprisingly mild. a lot of americans struggle with the „r“ in german as well as the „ch“ so thats nothing to worry about. :)

@@AbbyASMR Just some additional feedback as a German and an occasional (english) linguist. The pronunciation of the German R as a rolled R is perfectly acceptable , as it is not meaning distinguishing and appears in many German dialects.
As for the ch sound ( /χ/ or /ç/ ) that is another story, because those sounds and the /k/ (that you pronounce right now) are meaning distinguishing in so called minimal pairs (think Bäcker [ˈbɛkɐ] and Becher [ˈbɛçɐ] ).
There are a lot of excellent tutorials online for approching the sound, which would far surpass my ability to explain it in text. In any way your German is excellent. Kudos for learning such a hard language.

We germans are surprised and kinda thankful when foreigners learn german. Remember that the ch is just like the J in spanish like in Jalapeño. We see it like a "level up" when foreigners are able to pronounce it correctly :)))

I understand completly what you're talking about. I always enjoyed english asmr so much more than german. Maybe it's because of the "hardness" of the german language? An english friend of mine once said to me, she was thinking, that we germans are yelling or cussing at each other, because it sounds so rough. :D English ist softer, kind of melodic, i think, so maybe it's easier to relax to. :)

5:12 and on the topic of harsh judgement or even judgement at all: i hope there will be not ONE negative comment, no matter how the video of yours continues. Its just not our cup of tea, how well and which language(s) you speak. I really appreciate your effort and i think it's always good and comforting to speak (and read) at least basics.
Our friends from overseas or e.g. UK always force us to speak ONLY german, so they learn more easily. And other way round when we go traveling, at least in english.
But, nvm, you will do it your way anyway (😁) and will succeed. Maybe Berlin is a good environment to learn german, idk. In Hamburg, where i live, they say it's kind of easy because notthern people are a bit more stubborn switching to english. As a native i can not verify if that's really true.
    Good luck for your B2!
Edit: i enjoyed it a lot! It's interesting how german is being learned and which kind of influence 'the native tung and throat" has and how to break barriers.

As a native German speaker I only have to say two things first you speak the language already very well and I liked it watching you for the first time and second sometimes you pronounced the „ch“ a little wrong which isn’t a big problem but as an example on the numbers you pronounced it like a g a little bit but at minute 22 you pronounced it correctly on ich but that’s just something little and you will get it eventually 👍

I'm a native German speaker and are absolutely stunned by your pronunciation and knowledge. Especially considering you're a level A2 and considering you didn't start learning very early. You're so good at translating all these phrases (tbh I didn't know how to translate some of them properly out of total brain lack) and you sound just like you've been practising for ages or even like you spoke German forever. For sure some things in German aren't easy, for example the pronunciation and use of "ü", "ä" and "ö" or the German "R" or the pronunciation of "Ch" but I think you managed them really well and you know, where's the fun when theres's no space to improve? Without further rambling about German and all its hard sides, I just want to tell you that I think you're doing absolutely great. Even despite German being a pretty weird language. So please keep going and since I'm obviously no native English speaker, I'll have to apologise for possible grammar or spelling mistakes. Have an amazing day! :)

I love the similarities in the vocabulary between the german and english language. It makes them so much easier to learn. I often hear that the german language sounds aggressive for none native speaker, but then I hear you speak this words, then they doesn’t sound so bad to me at all. Given the same background of both languages shouldn’t they sound so much threatening to each other. I mean don’t we all have Germanic roots regarding to the language in the end? 😂

That German "r" is so recognizable. As a Belgian we had German classes in highschool. I remember I could say an isolated "r", but wherever a phrase had multiple "r"s, my throat just seized working and no more sounds would come out.
Then I stopped doing the German "r" altogether so I could at least practice my vocabulary and grammar.

    • @bobbwc7011
      @bobbwc7011 2 роки тому

You know there are multiple [r]'s in German, right? Yes, the standard language requires the "German" r but regionally there are 3 major forms of the r in the various dialects.

This is peak adorable! I mean this 100% positively.
First of all, don't worry about your accent. Although you speak with a noticeable one, I don't see it blocking any understandability. Much more important to get vocabulary up really.
But if you want to go for the brownie points, I think you are on the money with what the key point is, with the "r" sound as example. German uses lots of guttural sounds, and getting comfortable speaking those will drastically improve your pronounciation. Everything else is much better than what I have heard from many many other people..
You got this! Give it like 2-3 years and you're going to be super comfortable with german. And again, don't sweat the accent, just give the gutturals a practice if you feel like it. (:

It’s funny because no one would actually say wunderbar or ausgezeichnet to answer your question: “wie geht es dir?” Germans are more like “oh well it’s alright. I’m ok.” Not really interested in asking that question. I’m living with my Australian partner in Australia and at first it was so awkward that no matter where you’re going people would always ask hey how’s it going? German is the one language I always felt sounded most like English (even with my lack of knowledge of German overall), especially with how much the two share similar terms and phrases or even different terms that both still convey a similar meaning. I wonder if that's something you and your partner ever joke about with one another 😄

Oh my God I can finally flex with my knowledge from my Medieval English studies! That's because English partially derives from a very early form of German, called Anglo-saxon. If you read very early English (Old English) literature, as a German there will be a lot of words that sound kind of familiar or even close/the same depending on the dialect that's spoken in your area. There are some words we use in Cologne dialect that are still similar to Modern English, like the phrase "En Appel und'n Ei" ("an apple and an egg") or the word "Aap" (Ape) :)

Even though you clarified it's not a teaching video I think it might be the most relaxing way to learn some new words till I fall asleep and wake up with little bit more knowledge in my mind haha.

I'm a Chinese and I'm learning German too! I find it quite hard, you know, the "r" pronunciation and all the "die der dad". I'm not even getting the a1 yet but I'll work on it. Your German is just fabulous!

I've been waiting for this video! 😀
No need to be insecure about your accent. It's very sweet. 😊
11:20 The german "ch" seems to be very hard for many foreigners (my GF is from korea, and she struggles with it as well .. and also with our "r"). It sounds a bit like "k", when you say it.
Anyways. Really nice video so far!
Hope we can hear more of that in the future.

I am 17 now but lived in Berlin at age 13 for just one year, and I miss it so much!
I’m at a B1 level but my comprehension is, of course, much better than my speaking. I also have had no formal instruction except for 6th grade and 3 weeks last summer, so I just try to talk to my dad (fluent) and my grandma (native) as frequently as possible ❤

So wie du dich fühlst wenn du deutsch sprichst, ist wie wir uns fühlen wenn wir englisch sprechen. Der Akzent, die Angst etwas falsch zu machen, etc.
Man hört zwar, dass du keine Muttersprachlerin bist aber im Vergleich zu anderen US-Amerikanern ist das Nichts! In ein paar Jahren sprichst du sicherlich beinahe perfektes Deutsch🧚🏼‍♀️

    Hallo aus Deutschland :)
Maybe I can help German learners with the "r": it's not really formed in the back of the throat but in the back of your mouth. You have to raise the back of your tongue and slightly touch the roof of your mouth. This way you create some friction to the passing air.
There are three ways of pronouncing "ch". One of them sounds "back-of-the-throat"-like ("ch" after a, o and u, e.g. machen, doch, suchen), but actually it's formed like the "r". You just have to press the back of your tongue against the roof of your mouth a little bit harder to create more friction.

I feel like Berlin is the city of Europe. Not in a political way, more like a cultural way because you can literally sit in a restaurant and find every language or culture of European countries in there. And i just love that!!! (Of course there are other cities in Europe that are like this too!! Rn I’m just referring to Berlin ♥️ and its also my own opinion! Just wanted to clear that up, in case someone wants to come for me 🥲 love y’all and have a good night 🤍)

I think that more German/English asmr would be awesome, despite living in the United States I took a semester of German in college, but before I could proceed to German II the professor who was teaching it left to return to Germany, thus I did not have the oppotunity to learn as much German as I wished to either.
