Hi sirobb ive Just bought a d5 Volvo S60 and it has this problem. Ive been looking through your videos you have posted and mine has most of the problems you have put up.
Your videos have help me a lot and saved me money and headache from the wife as she thought I bought a lemon.
Thanks again please please keep posting these realy helpful videos.
Same same for me Simon... mine doesn't have all the issues though...
But definitely you made a huge contribution to my pocket....
Thanks
Hi Simon, Hope you’re well, how are your swirl flaps?😮 I have problems with mine, wondered if there were any swell flap videos in the pipeline👍
I don't own a D5 but just wanted to thank you for taking the time to share this knowledge.
OMG man !!! I was REALLY WORRIED about my D5 engine, because of this sound. Now, at 1 am, searching about the issue, I have found your video - and yes , I can tell that this was my problem. Thank you very much!
Just subscribed because you've done a great job with this diagnostic...Have been running Volvo XC90 D5 for the past 7 years (on my third car now) and these are the best tips. great man, thank you
You sure told the experts! Nice job, handy thing to know for D5 owners, many thanks.
Had exact same problem, went on YT found your video SiRobb and everything is sorted now. I just had to comment beacuse you helped me effectively and quickly diagnosed this! Much much appreciated for your kindness and that you are uploading such videos! 2 weeks ago I was after W124 MB pre 1993 but I couldn't find right example so I changed my mind and luckily my Gold D5 2002 S60 with 65k milage came up on Facebook marketplace and I decided to give a go beacuse my head always turned around when I saw these cars and used to always liked them : D Same as 7xx series, 9xx, 850, and pre 2002 V70s. My car was bit neglected but I am giving her proper care now. Last week front and rear engine mounts, full service plus carbon cleaning, front brake pads, central exaust leak welded, Injector seal replaced, turbine refurbished and wheel alignment done. That's so far. I am gonna check all suspension as a next step and replace gradually everything which needs to be addressed. Feel good about that! I've got one struggle with interior though and it's driver seats. Because it's Velour ( I didn't want leather interior) the seat is worn and there are holes already in a stichings. Anyway this as well will be done! They such a great cars. They have this feel of 90s/80s and when you driving one no any other from any new ones brands will make you smile and there is feeling in you that you actually never will go for modern beacuse is there any pleasure to drive a soulless machine ? : ) I like as well idea that these cars proper maintained lasts forever not needing to be replaced and people by keeping them developing some sort of feelings towards them. That's true friendship beetwen the man and the machine isn't ? SiRoob have a nice day tomorrow and wish you all the best! Cheers!
Полностью с Вами согласен😊
You are brilliant.
Thank you for your videos.
You are really helping alot of people.
Thank you.
This is What i call superb info from an Expert in my opinion, You have a lot of videos and i like them very much AS this is important and simple info, No volvo Dealer will tell you, at least not here in Norway (NoWay🤣)
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this, that was really helpful. I didn't realise my engine wasn't supposed to be as loud, and had really bad power loss on my motor coming home from holiday! Going to try this tomorrow and order new mounts
Hi SiRobb
Just wanted to thank you for the well presented & informative videos. I have recently acquired a V70 D5 and as a retired heavy truck fleet engineer I guess I would eventual get around to learning some of the stuff you have presented in such good tutorials. Very impressive.
Thank you Dave
Well thank you too Dave for taking the time to comment.
It's always satisfying to hear folk find my ramblings useful and welcome to the Volvo fold. ☺️
It's 3 plus years since I previously thanked you for your really impressive tutorials Simon and you continue to do some great stuff.
Just wondering could you direct me to anything you have experienced on changing the Volvo HU-850 radio with another of same model coming from same year V70. There appears to be some sort of software mismatch, CAN bus issue and proving to be a nightmare. I don't have VIDA or DICE but would buy if a code change is possible. Dave
Thank you... You are a Legend. 😉
Everyone on here calls themselves an expert 😂.
Even the "technicians"
At my local main dealer couldn't diagnose this noise for me.
I did as you do in this video and problem solved.
My engine mounts are fine but the vacuum hose had come disconnected...
Probably the last time an "expert" had his hands under the bonnet.
You are so right about so called experts I know this through bitter experience. Recently I took my 2007 D5 to a workshop fir a crank shaft seal replacement, a 7-8 hour job listed in Volvo schedules of work. The workshop took the whole engine and gearbox out, split the two, replaced the seal, replaced the whole unit resulting in a car that would not run properly below 2k revolutions. 24 hours work, a car unuseable and they wanted £1400, and I bought the seal.
Another brilliant video, I decided to check to see if mine had the popping issue and it dose, all engine mounts are new. I’ll be watching your other videos to try and locate the source of the issue! Thanks very helpful stuff
THANK YOU so much for your video you are the man my Volvo s60 d5 is fixed
Thanks for this video, had a very rare limp home mode issue and suspected a vacuum leak straight away and tested for this noise and have it, so luckily an easy fix
how did you fix it?
Once again SiRobb does the job! My D5 is doing this and I know it is the mounts and I have a vacuum tester. But I actually think that pipe is not connected to the control valve on my car. I must check when daylight arrives!
Genius videos, will create some work but save a fortune! Many, many thanks.
Hey, SiRobb thanks for this excellent tip! Have been watching your Volvo videos for a while !! Absolutely great!!
Again, he's the man Sirob
Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Had the same issues with the sound coming from the filler hole. Also people said it was a crankcase ventilation problem but ventilation was all clear... Gonna check the vacuum hoses tomorrow. I already blocked the engine pads a long time ago so it could me the lines to the turbo.
Just bought a D5 and I'm really glad I've seen this, as mine makes the exact same noise.
I now know what to look for! Thank you! =)
Thanks rob, brilliant vid. The problem with professionals is, there not very professional and know everything about nothing.
Fantastic videos mate well done 👍
Hi to you all Volvo owners! First of all i have to say that SirRobb is the Superman of old Volvo. Thanks to him i discovered why my old d5 made that strange noise when pullin off the oil filler cap. I can confirm that is a vacuum related issue. so, i noticed that when pushin hard the brake peddal the noise stoped. so in my case it was the power brake booster cause is related to the vacuum pump. the car was brakin just fine but sometimes the return of the brakin pedal was kind of slow followd by some air leak, like a wistle. Hope this info is usefull for those who didnt find anyother leak on the engine monunts or vacuum pump. Thank you SirRobb
Johnny Depp you mightve just solved my problem with the vaccum leak
Ive literallt replaced all the lines and mounts but still get the noise. Going to try this tomorow too see if it works
Hi Johnny, I have just found a similar knocking noise after pulling off the oil cap of my C30 D5. It sounds very similar to this video but higher pitched. Can you remember if the sound from your engine was higher pitched? Would I be able to contact you and send you a video? I still need to check the engine mounts the same way this video suggests and also push the break pedal hard like what you did and see if the noise stops. Cheers.
Did changing the brake booster solve the problem?
Well that’s Amazing ! Who’d have thought that noise in the engine was an engine mount outside the engine !
Very usefull, thanx a lot. My problem was solved after your advice
how?
Hi sirobb ,kept most of your vids, very helpful, been in motor trade 55yrs,got this xc70 countryman diesel to sell 2 yrs ago with 229k on it one owner war and peace history ,now 235k as I couldn't part with it as it does every thing it comfort and ease, one thing I've had a go at to no success, engine check message, lack of power, checked most thing gave up taking turbo of to degrease the vanes as it looked a right job, I just drive and when it does it I flick of the ign and on again and carry on driving, worse when cold so I don't Rev it to much then, had egr off etc cleaned it all,inc top rocker box, some crap in there, thank gig for
Sorry not finished my quote, never mind, thanks still doing it...
I agree - Fantastic! mine does this! I nearly walked away. So glad I didn't. Best wishes Tony :-)
Lovely, thanks so much!
And while the Volvo world might be small - you are one of the great..=*^)
I'll check out the other video right now.
Hope to run into you some time and be able to say Thanks face to face..=*^)
Thanks again!
Today I have tested this and had the same noice and same fix you show... But im comcern of your video I would recommend you to check your PCV that not excists and your camshaft Thank you for your Videos, Mate...
I own an D5 with engine damage cause I've a good engine to replace. Thr engine runs and To hear was this Noise (thanks to you i knew what it is) and a metallic hard noise from a defect top engine mount. a detective Glowplug prevent from a good start. So the previous owner had been informed by the workshop that engine damage was imminent and he sell it cheap.
It's a shame what workshops tell his customers for a bullshit for the next order. Ok the dpf was full cause glowplug failure but I repaired it all and have a very good in shape v70 phase 3 for much less than good in state running cars....
Thanx again
Amazing information! Thank you for sharing!!
Very useful video
Many thanks ❤️
sirrob i like yours videos its perfect.
I have same problem on my s80 2011 D3 engine and i asked to volvos service this problem but they said that this is normal ... i gonna test it if d3 have same vacuum system like p2 volvo.
Thanks for great video !!!
Thank you for this video👍🏼👍🏼
I have a D5244T4 engine on V70. Checked vacums-OK,checked and cleaned pcv-was quite clean and ok. Started to install rocker cover and discovered broken rocker arm,so one of the valves is not working so causing popping noise and massive oil leak. Rocker cover was removed to replace its seal. Broken rocker arm had made 10x4mm hole through cylinder head into injector socket.
You sir are a star
Thank you for sharing the knowledge
Great info. Thank you.
Awesome, thank much for the video!
Hi Robb, interesting video. I think in 38yrs of driving I’ve never undone my oil filler cap whilst the engine was running. Of course I now have on my recently purchased winter ride 04 V70 D5 😱 the popping sound is there on take off, car drives well otherwise. Hopefully it can wait until the Spring when my Summer car comes out again.
Thanks for the information
10 more years, and I'll learn to fix all parts of my 700K D5. Thanks!
WOW WELL DONE FINDING THIS KNOCKING NOISE PROBLEM !!!
I have bought 2008 xc90 d5 for my dad 3years ago with this noise. I knew then that it was something to do with vacuum but could not find what. Ever since it bothered me but now I know what it is and can fix it. Thanks
Nice video thanks so much
Absolutely brilliant tutorial videos Si, Rob, SiRob. Imo the very best Volvo tutorials on UA-cam 👍👍👍 I have just bought a XC90 with 105K miles with enjoy popping, now I know it's nothing really, the other thing is a rattly noise from down by pulleys on idle but when rev up it goes, I was thinking it could be air con pulley? Can I replace the pulley? Cheers.
Hi,you are too strong 🛠️👍 thanks my Friend🙏✌️
Thank you very much
I removed the brake booster vacuum hose from the vac pump and this popping noise STOPPED! Stick my finger over the pump inlet and the popping starts again. How contrary is that. Very good videos and much appreciated.
Use a vacuum tester and and check at different engine temperatures as the EGR position can cause the popping noise even with a sound vacuum system.
@@sirobb That does make sense, thank you. I was having slow start issues with my xc70 and tracked back to the ECU not seeming to transmit a signal to glow plug relay, also the original volvo glow plug connectors were really craply done so I have just made a whole new glow plug relay and distribution system controlled by a NO micro push switch mounted on plastic panel near gear stick. Also noticed that when the coolant temp switch is removed, the car is fooled into thinking it's very cold so opens up fuel rack etc and starts immediately (sort of puts it into beast mode). So I have run that to a NC momentary switch next to the glow plug relay witch. One way or the other, that get it started! These are so well built, but sometimes a bit too clever so we have to rethink the electrics. Before I got it the history shows a fortune spent at volvo garage to fix glow issues, fab remedies like wrapping tap around the glow connections!
My old D5 had this when i bought it, drove 100.000km with it then old it off to a new owner. never had any issues
Thank you 🙏 ❤
Top man!
Top Man! Always wondered what’s the source of that noise when I opened oil filer cap on my D5’s XC60 and V60. Thank you for sharing
Thx sir for this aweaom vodeo!I have on my s69 D5 low acc and issues over 2500rpm,and the error code is 6805.All happen ed when in one workshop cleaned my egr valve!
Thank you sooooooooo much.
Brilliant thanks
Thank you!
bravo...!!
Thank you
Thanks!
Nice done
Tank you . You are a smart one ! If someone is tell his self (specialist) don’t meen that is smart too . Sorry for my language
Too bad your car seems not to have the parking heater installed. This component fails all the time on the up-to-2006 models. A repair and disassemble walk trough would be fantastic.
Your video's are great!\
Thanks for reply mate .mines is a euro 4 186 bhp
There will be no benefit to blocking then.
Just change the problem mount(s) ASAP.
@@sirobbI just changed my vakum pump and I have a question about it.On iddle vakum is on Max and when I gave some gas 2500-3000 rpm it is still on Max,is that ok?
I soo on your previous video about the vakum that it supposed to drop off when it's running on hire rpm,or am I wrong?
@@majatolj6747That's a different video measuring a different part. Vacuum varies on the tcv which controls the engine mounts. It should remain stable on the vacuum pump itself.
Thanks
thank you very helpful 4 me how can i prevent the vacuum leak
SiRobb, thanks for this and the other videos. I just find this noise in my s60. Temporary fixed for a screw.
Need quickly changing the mounts or enough few weeks later? Thanks
Good info
Cheers.
good and strong car it is. introduce and describe your car😃
Sorry for asking dumb questions, but what part do you have to change if you have this noice and did the same as you did?
Mate your a star. I just bought a v60 es 63plate and I've not had a Volvo before. Lovely ride o ly done 60 miles but theres a hissing noise like a turbo leak or inter cooler leak ect
Dose seem propper sluggish but I've been that busy mot had ti e to look. I just tonight opened the oil filler cap and heard this load popping noise and my neighbour who was 50 ft away said "oh that's fucked get rid of it... "
Hello @sirobb Aside of the popping noise, the noticable engine clicking noise is perfeczly ok? Or it might be problem with hydraulic lifters? Thank you!
you top man
OMG I HAVE THIS!😧 I have had loads of V70’s but never came across this before🤷🏼♂️ I am an engineer and annoyed i couldnt find what it was i have never heard of VACUUM ENGINE MOUNTS! I need to change my lower steering UJ before the MOT as its starting to feel ‘vague’ so its that. When its up on the ramps ill change the mounts. NEVER heard of any manufacturer doing this before, totally new to me 🤷🏼♂️ CHEERS SIROBB I was thinking big ends but the engine PURRS and is very pokey so not that?
Hi SiRobb, I have a XC70 D5 2005, got the same noise when opening the oil filler cap, WIll try to remove the hoses to the engine pads, I also agree it is a vaccum issue, my question, I was probably stupid when I blew compressed air into the hoses after removing the hoses from the TCV. Do you think I have damaged something with the compressed air. The turbo is not working anymore but that could be linked to being clogged with oil sauce after the oil cooler broke. Thx and best regards from a Swede living in Germany having three Volvos. XC70 D5 , V70 GLT 1997, S80 V8 2007 with Heico sport exhaust.
hi
my d5 makes this noise but when i bloke the brake servo hose and the vacuum hose from governor, the popping noise stops completely. dose that mean my brake servo is faulty. no leak on vacuum pump. i blanked the engine mounts but noisy still
brilliant
Thanks for this video. My V70 has this same issue . Why do the engine mounts require a vacuum?
Did think my self omg hes right. Is it out of oil I thought. Then couldn't find any dipstick!!° I'm an engineer an I've stressed out about this all night untill I've seen your vid. I think there is a few problems with the car but I'm now understanding what is going on without having to ask a main dealers help.. expensive and clueless
I also have a vacum issue with my D5. The noise doesn't go away even if I block the connection on the vacum pump itself. May this be caused by a leaking brake booster? I already have changed the O-ring on brake boosters plastic connector.
So smoke is perfectly normal for a d5 pheww. I've be maintaining mine like a crazy man. I haven't got the excessive popping noise but a bit of smoke from the oil cap. I'm running miller's 5w40.
Sirobb do you actually know how the loss of vacuum is causing that popping sound. Obviously, it is a vacuum issue and my D5’s popping noise is even louder than yours so I am just trying to understand what exactly is popping in the engine. Many thanks!
Thank u for video, how to solve this problem?
volvo s60 d5 is in my opinion the best second hand diesel saloon car you can buy .
There's many who agree with your opinion, myself included.
Exact same symptom on my Euro 3 D5.
Is this something that would be harmful for the engine to drive with over longer period of time, or is it just a concern or not while idling?
Runs like a train, but I’ve started to feel signs of a bad engine mount when I accelerate and then let go of the throttle quickly (just to diagnose if it was the mounts or not)
Can you explain why the engine mounts me CREATE noise in the oil filler cap ?
Is the breather operates on the same vacuum system ?
Sorry for my english
Just got a d5 & thought I'd test this myself but someone has disconnected both the hoses from the mounts. I have this noise but can't figure out where it's coming from if both mounts have been disconnected. No fault codes on the car when driving it does make a turbo noise I'm guessing that's normal though
Why does it have vacuum to the engine mounts?
Thank you same problem.my car is like jumping under seat
hello, if you plug the hose in and the sound goes away, it means there is a leak somewhere, if the sound is knocking, it means there is no leak or
Hi SiRobb, maybe you can help me ;)
i have test it on a car i want to buy but the sound hasn't changed. On a test drive the brakes doesnt work like they should. I think the brake booster is the problem. Less power too at the acceleration.
Could it be that the vacuum pump is defect and thats also the reason why it has less power?
Also there is smoke coming out of the dipstick.
Greatings Albert. I hope you can help me cause you know more about the volvos than the volvo mechanics.
hi Sirobb I am a french, the youtube translation is not good I can not understand. I have a d5 and it makes the same noise I would like to know what was the solution to the problem. Your videos are a great help to me! thank you very much!
What if I plug it if for a mean time until we fix the problem. Would it do any harm to the engine?
hi
my d5 makes this noise but when i blank the brake servo hose and the vacuum hose from governor, the popping noise stops completely. dose that mean my brake servo is faulty. no leak on vacuum pump. i blanked the engine mounts but noisy still happen. have you tried this?
What’s your video about engine mounts?
Got the motor service light coming on, and a rough wobly engine so I thought change the engine mounts. Tried the test with the hose to the control valve and still the same noise. So I'm not sure what's going on there
Hi Sir Robb,
What is the sensor on the far left on top of the engine - to the right of the oil filler?
And what does it connect to?
Love your videos and follow you on Volvo forums..=*^)
Christerart1 Hi. That's the MAP sensor.
It's location can vary dependant on your D5 model year.
Explained in my very short video here ua-cam.com/video/EL8hkRS_2LM/v-deo.html
Thank you for your support and yes I recognise your forum username.
The Volvo world is a small one. ☺️
Is the clanc sound normal for a d3 2011 2.0 163? And the somke?
Have this noise, changed the vacuum mounts, still persisting, leaving comment here for reference thank you it's very helpful
You could check the vacuum pump. It could be worn and therefore making noise. Or it's leaking vacuum
@@maximilianschmidt1443 where do I find this in the engine bay? Thanks for the tip I will look into it
@@LucasW.B when standing in front of the engine, the pump is on the right side of the engine. In the back, just next to the upper engine mount.
There is a vacuum pump testing video in my list.
@@sirobb I just found that after posting the comments x)
Thanks a lot for all the D5 info it's been a huge help in understanding how my car works and all the possible failure points, they can make many miles** but must be well maintained and you've helped ever so much! :)
Volvo for life!
