This has enormous implications. What comes to mind is the question of what is "life"? Just like the jump in consciousness from "knowing" we lived in a flat Earth and we were the center of existence, to realizing we are one small planet in a universe filled with galaxies, this is a huge shift in our collective consciousness.

Most of you people don't have the slightest idea what he is talking about. Anyone who thinks his research team is creating artificial organisms that may harm us is just an idiot. He isn't using a pathogenic bacteria, and his team placed many stop codons around the watermarks he incorporated into the DNA so the organism can't accidentally produce something harmful, like a toxin, for example. But most of you don't have the slightest idea about gene expression, so you wouldn't understand that either. Arguing with UA-cam warriors will forever be a lost cause.

They tried mycoplasma genitalium: that's not pathogenic?! Ha! You must be joking. It's one of the main causes of pelvic inflammatory disease, serious urinary and urethra tract infections, endometriosis and infertility, various cancers, and accelerating HIV infections. It's a horrible little bacterium that should have been annihilated instead. At best, these were lazy, unconscientious scientists looking for a small genome to work with yet oblivious to any possible devastating future consequences. At worst, diabolical ones now able to achieve those consequences.

-my team and I created a living cell by putting chemicals together the right way
-The cell we made can reproduce, so it's really alive
-We did it with the help of computer programs we made to run equipment we made to do this
-We're going to try to make more living cells and try to make them so they can do things that will help humans and our planet.
-We "watermarked" it, which means we put in stuff that shows it was made by us.

is it truly 100% synthetic if they had to use yeast to organize the chromosome.
They were using pre made life (yeast) to organize chemicals into a chromosome for synthetic life.
I know it's a semantics argument, but i think the whole process should be done with computers, chemicals, and non living tools to be truly synthetic. Still amazing accomplishment none the less.

Well, surely a great achievement. But I agree with some posters here, it is not truely new life (what is implied), all they do is piggyback on existing cells. Interesting enough, we still really can't create new life, we can only manipulate existing one, since we don't know what life really means and how it all works. Very intereresting nevertheless and a lot for work. So I'm curious what practical applications this might have.

My grandfather always said we were lucky to have religious institutes because they look after believers who are by all counts, insane, and if we didn't have the church we'd have to look after them ourselves. As for your second statement if you read my first comment you'd see that perhaps a God doesn't have to make the heavens and the earth. Dionysius is the god of wine, he didn't make no earth that wasn't fermentable. He probably is S. cerevisiae as people envisioned him before microscopy. He probably was also drunk and struggling to find his keys.

Certainly a valid point as well, but I think atleast fear is still somewhat natural and sort of primordial as opposed to greed which is more or less intentional and even malicious.
My point is that people don't choose to be afraid, but they do choose to be greedy.
    But then again...
Excess can make any emotion venomous, so possibly that's a better underlying cause for both.

The expences reaches $450 mil just after 15-16 years, but by that time they have starting making profit; the med companies are, however, never allowed to stop researching the long term effects of their product and will thus will have to finance it.

I would say that fear is the greatest of our pitfalls. Fear of each other, fear of the unknown and fear for our own livelihoods. How much suffering aren't we ready to impose on others because of it, and how much help couldn't we have given in spite of it?

So if you're a christian, you're still an atheist when it comes to other people's religion like Hinduism, Ancient Roman Religion, Ancient Greek Religion, etc. What if you're wrong about those gods?According to some of them, you will be punished by their gods for not believing. But it's absurd, likewise I think it's absurd to be afraid of not believing in your god.

here is the problem though.. it might not work but it might not even be needed...
there is no gurante that it is possible to make a cell that can execute any dna.. for not any dna might produce something either.
so basically if htey can mass produce already they wont need to redisgn a cell synthetically.. other then dna

Granted only one of them can be right about each given story, but not all of them can be accurate about the entire account. It is up to the reader to take each account into consideration and ask God for a revelation of what the truth is.

Craig Venter's team has not yet synthesed a complete cell from inorganic matter. But what they did is they introduced inorganically synthesised chromosome into a existing cell. I think, their hope is, they will do similar things for other parts of the cell. With the that hope, there is this big claim: life is synthesized. If you replace a brick in SAINT PAUL'S cathedral, it does not mean you built the cathedral.

So ive seen that this "synthetic life" uses the same 4 letter code from a bacterium and uses its transcription and translation machinery. Isnt it like a programmer inserting a usb drive with a program in it and the computer having an os that can recognize it to even use the program? Its a big difference than making a computer with its own code and operating system from scratch. So its a like "booting up" a cell with a synthetic genome and not what some sources say it is.

@radscorpion8 Final post: That's why I think Raeez is right..because synthetic life really does imply more than creating life with a helping hand, its literally creating life all at once. Therefore this should more correctly be described "transplanted synthetic DNA", rather than "synthetic cell" - also for practical reasons. As he wrote, what are you going to name it when they actually create life at the *most* basic level that leads to cell formation (synthetic abiogenesis?)
