I live just in Calgary Sue! Those were deer at first, and the surprise corner were elk. You see them EVERY TIME you are in Banff! And since its very touristy, lots of people, they are quite comfortable with you being quite close (they ignore you for the most part). 'Rutting' season: males can be aggressive, etc. bit in winter, everyone is just trying to survive. Waterton for bears black/brown/grizzly -- you won't be walking with them), Kananaskis for moose, Radium Hot Springs: small herds of bighorn sheep , my Kimberley friends have a large flock of wild turkeys! The golf course in Banff is a great place for lunch and watch the elk on the course. Johnson Canyon hike is beautiful, though I think you will have to return in warmer weather for it--its a good hike up to the paint pots (also a summer view). Next time through. The Banff Springs Hotel is lovely, the gondola ride is worth it for the VIEW. And lunch is nice at the top. Or a martini :) ENJOY

This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing all the info (& correcting my wildlife spots ;). What a beautiful place to live. Clearly I was blown away by the elk, but it seems there is so much more still to see.
