Next time you’re fishing around the bridges, try a bit bigger of a hardbody around 80-100mm casting along the light shadow lines.might get lucky with a smelly silver slab.with that amount of choppers around, surely would’ve been some jewfish sitting underneath them.btw keep up the great work Jade, really enjoy your videos 👍🎣🐟

Some tips for fishing at night. !!
As someone else mentioned get rid of the lights, particularly the bright blue squid lights at the back. Those are for catching squid and prawns, not for catching fish. I've fished a lot at night for over 55 years and from a little kid, I was always taught to use the bare minimum amount of light you can get away with and to keep the lights out of the water, until you're about to land a fish. Keep the head torches off and only turn them on as you're about to land a fish. You both had head torches running continuously and you had Botany Bay lit up like Luna Park ! Botany Bay is pretty bright at the best of times, but on a dark waterway like Cowan Creek, where I have fished hundreds of times at night, once your eyes become dark adapted at night you can almost see in the dark without a light anyway.
When fishing near a lit up bridge like that regardless of the waterway, get the boat into the shadow of the bridge. That way the boat doesn't cast underwater shadows. Doesn't matter too much whether your casting into the shadows or lit up areas with either bait or lures, but getting the boat into a position where it doesn't cast underwater shadows is pretty important and moreso in shallower water. I used to fish a lot at night for bream under the Windang Bridge 40 years ago in less than 1 metre of water, with live squirt worms. It was pretty important in that situation. Meant the difference between a dozen 1 kg bream, or no fish!
Good luck on your next trip !

youre one of those people that the car scene people call 'sleepers', just a quiet bloke, but when you say something, you know its the real deal.
anymore knowlegde youre willing to drop on us fishing sage? what part of the tide is the best time to fish? the start of the run out? the end of the run out? the start of the run in? the end of the run in?

@@lilkevo88 Well the tides can be a complete lottery. There are some spots that fish better on the top or bottom of the tide and there are some spots that fish better on the run in or run out. In my younger years when I lived in Sydney, I used to fish Port Hacking a lot for bream on the flats near the Ballast Heap at night. I always preferred to fish that on the last 2 hours of the run in with high tide about 3 hours after sunset and throwing live nippers, with no sinker, up close to the rocks and oysters. Used 4lb line and got a lot of big bream over many years. Anchored up and burleyed hard with a mix of boiled wheat, bran and tuna oil. Just about every fish we caught had a belly full of wheat pellets. We lost quite a few on the bricks, but that's the payoff for more hookups. I'd rather hook 10 and land 7, than hook 2 and land 2. I also used to fish Cowan Creek a lot at night for bream, hairtail and jew. Didn't get that many jew, but got a lot of bream and hairtail. I found the tide didn't matter so much up there because generally you were fishing pretty deep water and regardless of how big the tide run was, there wasn't a lot of run in the water up there. Conversely it runs about 6 knots under the rip bridge on a big tide run. I've seen 12 foot tinnies with small outboards going backwards when they get near the rip bridge in the middle of the channel. At some point they then work out that they need to go the side out of the main current run.
I live at Shoalhaven Heads now and notwithstanding the river is only 800 metres away, most of my fishing is close offshore for snapper and flathead, where the tide doesn't matter so much. Although I've found that when I'm fishing just South of the river mouth it's easier fishing when the tide is running into the river, as you can fish lighter and if I'm drifting you also drift slower. It doesn't necessarily change the amount of fish you catch, but it's a bit easier fishing. If it's too lumpy offshore I have a couple of spots I fish in the river. One fishes well on the run in towards the top of the tide. The other is a drain out from a creek into the main river and it fishes well for the first 2 hours of the run out tide.
      A couple of generalisations:-
The lighter you can fish in terms of sinker weight, lure weight and line breaking strain the better. I fish offshore for snapper with 20lb braid and 20lb flouro leader on a 4000 size eggbeater. If I'm drifting I use either a 3oz or 4oz sinker. If I'm anchored and burleying, I use sometimes no sinker, or a 1/2 oz, or a 1oz sinker. Water depth is ~ 30 metres. Where I fish isn't too snaggy so I can get away with that. You do get busted up by a decent kingfish from time to time, but I prefer eating snapper to kingfish, so that doesn't worry me. I'd rather land more snapper and lose the odd kingfish. In the old days we used to use 40lb mono on 7.25" Alveys. It was like fishing with electrical cable and we didn't get as many fish. You also needed much heavier sinkers because of the extra water drag on the line. When I fish in the river and likely to catch a decent lizard, I generally use 8lb braid and 10lb leader. If I'm fishing specifically for bream, I use 6lb braid and 6lb leader.
If you're going to anchor or spot lock the boat, burley always helps. I generally use chicken pellets + raw bran + old pilchards and slimy mackerel from previous trips (or any other fish frames or scraps) + tuna oil + aniseed oil. It was illegal to use aniseed oil when I was younger, but you've been allowed to use it for many years now. When I'm anchored offshore I find the burley brings the bait around mid water to the surface, with the larger fish underneath them. I'll generally catch a few slimeys and yellowtail, then put the fillets down towards the bottom for the pinkies, which will also come up to midwater. Occasionally I'll throw a live bait down, but not that often these days, as I always fish for the table and my preference is pinkies in the 40cm to 60cm range. I'm not really looking for 1 metre kings. That was 30 years ago, but of course you do hook the odd one on a fillet bait.
People generally plan their fishing outings around the weather and their personal lives, not the size of the tide, but I've found a small run tide often fishes better and is much easier fishing than a big run tide. Like if it's running from .6 metres up to 1.1 metres it's a lot easier than .3 metres up to 1.8 metres. That might possibly be due to the fact you can fish a lot lighter in terms of sinker weight, but it definitely makes for easier fishing. I have one spot in the river that I only fish for about 20 minutes right on the tide change. Doesn't matter which tide change, as its deep water (about 18 metres); but outside of slack water it runs too hard to fish. It's a huge deep hole that's about 100metres long and 40 metres wide and it drops from about 8 metres to 19 metres.
The most important thing to remember with fishing is that you are always learning and no matter how much you think you know, there's always someone that can give you a tip that might help you. Locals in particular. I've lived down here for about 10 years and only learned last year, why I got less snapper in winter compared to summer, fishing my usual closer in spots in 30 metres of water. A mate who has lived here all his life said that I needed to go wider and deeper in the winter. He said get out to a few of the known spots in 70 plus metres of water in the winter. That wasn't my initial preference, as it's a lot harder fishing in 70 metres, than it is in 30 metres and it also chews a lot more juice getting out there, but guess where the pinkies were !
      Good Luck !!

Forget the bay at night, and you will do better on the smaller tides around 1st quarter for Jew.
