People really out here thinking "this is too fast for my slow brain" is actually a criticism? This dude has obviously trained to be a technical god so why is complicated rhythm and free musical expression a turn off? I think its beautiful and i fucking love this style of playing. if it was done on guitar you'd all be creaming yourselves so stfu.

Unbridled joy, emotion, technique, pocket from Mitchell...
There isn't another drummer out there currently who exudes this style of play.
    No one.
    Mitchell owns it. 👏

In fact it’s soooo annoying that almost all drummers under 35 play exactly or in some way like this. You’re being facetious right?

The people that are actually hating on this dude in the comments are not legitimate musicians/percussionists. If the performance is not your cup of tea thats one thing.. but i see so many comments of people actually calling this guy out and criticizing him. Blows my mind. Like who do you think you are? lol. Incredible performance on the drum set.

The first time I heard Maestro Mitchell was probably with Stanley Clarke, ages ago. I can't even be sure Mike was in his twenties yet, but he was an absolute monster! Killing it. Then, years later, I start following these amazing Vic Firth videos. Like, I'm a bass player, so of course I'm totally into drummers. And so I see a bunch of videos in the series, and then this one comes along....
I was just so thankful the first time I heard this performance, and remain so all these years later. Amazing, jaw-dropping technique and feel and groove. I understood at that moment, as I kind of did when I first heard Mitchell: Okay, this is one of those drummers. One who can do anything and everything. I immediately put him in the same "box" in my mind as Chambers, Weckl, Colaiuta, Wackerman, Bozzio.... In other words, the most gifted, accomplished, brilliant, musical, swinging drummers to ever walk the planet!
And the joy he exudes! OMG, I would be so full of that joy if I could play or do anything as brilliantly as he does!

4:01 Do non drummers (keyboardists, guitarists, bass etc) get thrown off by such changes in time? I mean, being that drummers spends most of his time practicing time, wouldn't a beat like that throw the whole band off (because drummer still knows where the one is but keeps displacing it). Or is there a click helping everyone? 🤔💭🤔💭🤔

    • @Mega13thPerson
      @Mega13thPerson 5 років тому +3

The rest of the band was handpicked by Sput so I’m sure they are good enough musicians to count their way through the solo section. Also if they just listen to the piano/bass and not the drums they’ll know where one is being played. I think it would be hard to play with a click for the whole band because they would have to turn it off when Mike takes it out.

    • @jryuwah

To be honest it’s just the discipline of keeping an internal pulse regardless of what the drummer does. A lot of new school musicians have learned how to do so quite well. I remember when I was in high school I had a drummer do something like this to me and I had no idea what was going on. As I kept putting myself in those types of situations I learned how to keep time even if the drummer goes off in a tangent. when you master that it allows fluidity an exploration on the music when you can let your drummer diverge from the set time. We become the “click” or metronome for the drummer Rather than him /her being the met. Chris Dave is one of the pioneers of new school drumming who plays with the concept of diverging from the set click and expecting his band mates to remain locked in time. It’s all a form of discipline

The pedestrian beat is rock solid and being carried by the bass. Mike is the only one in danger of losing the one by playing over the bar like this and yah, that ain’t happening.

I see someone went to the Thomas Prigden school of overplaying. Crazy good chops (like, ridiculously good), just a little distracting at times.

For my taste, way way way way too much pointless showman-drumming. Useless fills without an end. Why is it that nowadays, drummers think that playing fast, ultra complex and adding tons of notes EVERY second is cool? I just don't get it. It is terribly annoying. No groove, no soul, no vibe, no feel to it. just a crazy bunch of notes, chops, thrown together without any musical value. I call it ego-performances. Serve the music dude. STOP OVERPLAYING! And I don't care if it is a drum-channel. It's just a turn-off.
Someone had to say it. I did. Now flame me. I don't care.

While i agree that this would be overplaying in a live scenario in front of a crowd i think that the point of these things is to showcase the artists skills and i think just playing a beat with a few fills to compliment the music would not really be good for this scenario. But i totally agree that this would not be a good style of playing for a live in front of crowd type of scenerio.

When you blow your wad in the first 30 seconds it diminishes everything. Total EGO based playing. Too much nonsense, too many notes, stepping all over other instruments and no dynamics...pretty much what most millennial gospel players do...noise
