N51/52/54/55 engines LOVE 0W/5W-40 weight! Noticeable difference from 5W-30. I'm a 5W-40 Liqui Moly guy myself because my N52 330i is spoiled rotten 🤣😭
@@DayOffDIY really quiets down the notoriously ticky N motors. The MANN HU816 is the correct filter as well, no doubt about it. It's crazy what the cheap filters do on these engines. Makes them sound catastrophic lol.
Some like to pre fill the oil filter housing after installing a new oil filter. Oil pressure seems to build faster after an oil change if the filter is already full of oil. I can't say for sure of this makes a differences but it wouldn't hurt :)
Agreed! It couldn’t hurt to always do it. I didn’t always do it for every oil service at the shop but on rod bearing prone cars it’s always a good idea
Attention to details and sharing them. Thanks for that. This week I am trying for the first time Shell Helix ultra (Pennzoil platinum euro is the same in NA I believe?). Also oil so yeah what else is there to say?
For the specific engines mentioned in the title, does BMW recommend oils that have the LL-01 specification? Outside of BMW branded oil, I recall Mobil 1 making a 0W40 European LL-01 formula and Castrol making a similar 5W30 in the LL-01 spec. Pentosin, LiquiMoly and some others have the LL-01 specs too. I don't pre-fill the oil filters on my N51, N52 and M54 personal cars, but I absolutely do on my S54. Manufacture recommended oil and more frequent changes are cheaper than new engines, especially if you plan to own one these cars for a long time!
They do recommend the LL-01 specification if I remember correctly. I usually look for it when looking for oil. I have seen some Euro spec oils out there too and that would be a good way to go! The only engines I’d worry about pre filling is the N20, N55 the S65 and S85 due to rod bearing issues, but it would be a good thing to do on any engine
Great job ! Love these engines! I get ocd and suck the old oil out of the oil filter housing and put fresh back. I’ve been using liqi moly 5w-40 and definitely approve it really lowered the tick tick tick these engines can get when they don’t get driven long distances often .
Thanks Chad! Great to see ya partner. Yeah I do that sometimes too, I was in a rush to get to the driving range lol Liqui moly is great stuff, wish I had better parts suppliers locally. If I want the good stuff I have to go online, but it’s usually the best price
So I picked up a z3 and previous owner said they did cooling system. The coolant measure stick is sorta floppy, doesn't bounce up straight like yours did and I know it supposed to be straight. Only concerned for accurate reading of my coolant levels.
Hey Chris! Sounds like the little stick may have disconnected from the float, even if they’re missing you can still get a somewhat accurate measurement. I’ll take a pair of needle nose and see where the float stops while pulling it up, to gauge where the max is in the bottle, plus you can always replace the expansion tank and renew the float and stick
@DayOffDIY it actually still floats but it's not stiff straight...pause LOLLL I've seen this alot in other cars in the service drive when doing top offs
I have never driven 1 of these, what's your opinion about the car. Also took my pro line smoke machine out of the box for the first time today and to my surprise the air compressor on it doesn't work. Needless to say I have been in a foul mood today. Anyway great job as always, tks for the video.
Oh no! I can reach out to em for ya! Or give you a contact email for their support team and get you fixed up! I’m sorry to hear that Johnny, I know they’ll take care of you and make it right. Did you buy the shop series plus with the built in air compressor? If so, did you try the Heat Aux side of the switch? One side does just heat, the other side kicks on the compressor. Let me know or send me an email! Dayoffdiy@gmail.com
As far as my opinion on the 1 series, they are a blast! Super fun to drive, handle great, not a fan of convertibles, ruins the feel of the chassis, but a hardtop 1 series, especially a 135 can be a absolute rocket ship
I really enjoy your content. As one of like your first 50 subscribers, I love how you have been pretty consistent to who you are as a person since day 1. Appreciate $ is a barrier but would love to see you do a M539-esque project. What project would you buy if you had $10k to kick off with?
Thank you for the comment and being such a loyal subscriber! I would love to get into a project like that as well. If i had 10k to get started on a BMW project, id look for a clapped out E46 M3 or an E39 M5, it would be hard to find for that price but i would give it a try. It would also be fun to build out an N54 E90, or any E90 for that matter. Depends on what deals i can find locally i think. Fun question :)
@@DayOffDIY I am not sure if it is the nostalgia of childhood, but E36 for me. The drivers seat felt like a cockpit and they seem more aggressive. I hope one day money is no object and we can all live vicariously through you 😂
@@keryn9119 I totally agree! The E36 has a very mechanical feel and the seats are surprisingly comfy and tuck you in nicely. Were going to keep this thing going and Im sure we will have lots of fun future projects for you all. Really appreciate your comment :)
As far as pre filling the oil filter housing? I’ve never found a need. Not a bad idea to prime the N55 oil filter housing due to its rod bearing issue but I never pre fill. I absolutely always pre lube the o rings on the filter though

Love how in depth you went with this one, not a lot of people do it like you!
Thanks Rupture! Figured some people could use some instructions on the basics
great videos! props from germany :D
Thank you Scope! Appreciate it!
A simple job that many people overlook and then they’re surprised when their car gives out lol nice one man keep it up 👍
Thanks ! Figure gotta cover the whole spectrum. Basics and beyond
Great job.Always great tips. I Enjoy your channel never a dissapointment.

Yes sir , I have to do same .. it’s frustrating when you want to do spur of the moment jobs have to preplan then and hope all goes well.
@@chadriddle3517 exactly! I like to work that way too but have at least a 24 hour turnaround on parts unless I use AutoZone or O’Reilly :/
