From the moment they pulled you out the car I knew they were gonna wait for the dog.
They usually force you out the car because the average joe doesn't like to get out of their "crash safety rated vehicle" in the middle of the highway. And they use that non compliance to claim "suspicious behavior".
The fact that you were compliant pretty much squashed that for them and they would have probably let you off with a "nonsense warning"... The reason they likely still ran the dog is:
1. They ran your license and got your past history.
or
2. When your home boy told the cop your life story.
If police separate 2 people it is to ask them the same exact questions and see if both people say the same things (where you going... where you coming from... how long you 2 been friends etc etc).
They also listen out for "places of interest". If they ask "where u going or coming from" and *ANY* of those places are, pass through or close to drug/gun/gang related areas it FURTHER bolsters their "suspicion".
It's called "fishing"... If during the questioning either of you answer slightly differently than the other, that further pads their "suspicion" investigation. This makes it more likely that if they do search you/vehicle that it stands up in court.
Once you have a license plate from out of state... this will always happen to you... They do it because it is FAR less likely that someone from out of state will come back MULTIPLE times in order to sue them or fight the bogus tickets.
*LIFE ADVICE FOR ANYONE WHO READ THIS FAR* Never EVER under any circumstance ... Talk to the police. Be nice ... play around... banter... But when they start fishing (where are u heading, coming from, do for a living etc etc) simply state "I'm so sorry officer but respectfully, my lawyer told me to never answer those types of questions and he charges me WAY too much money for me to ignore his instructions."

When they see out of state vehicles especially if they nice and with a person of color driving it they think it’s a valid reason to pull u over and waste ur time. Always end up writing up warnings for their made up violations “following to close” etc

As the passenger, vehicle owner or not, never give any physical form of ID. If you are the vehicle owner, they can run you from the tag or registration. Also, don’t even give your name unless they suspect you of a crime. Completely different scenario for the driver. Finally, respectfully decline to offer any information in response to their questions. It’s all a big fishing trip. Way too long a detention for a simple traffic violation warranting a formal complaint and law suit. They were stalling while waiting for the drug dog.
Props to both of you for keeping calm and collected. Even though it was uncalled for y’all kept your cool and were respectful. More people need to take you lead on that. 👍

Not giving 3 back his license is nonsense. First of all, if they’re keeping his license they need to explain that to him DIRECTLY. Telling someone else to tell him is foolishness because he deserves an explanation. Secondly, how can they keep someone’s license, especially someone from out of state? So now they’re forcing someone who is out of state, to travel the country with no valid form of ID. The whole way this was handled was ridiculous. Someone needs to see this because while I’m no expert on these things, it all seems excessive and unnecessary. Just glad you guys made it out of that situation safely. It could’ve been much worse. Whatever happens just get back to your beautiful families safely.

Technically the license is yours,you bought it! If your license is suspended it just means you can't drive,they had no right to leave you without an ID.
Wrong if your licenses is suspended you supposed to go to the dmv an turn in the driver's license an get a Id. I've been there done that.
They took a right, converted it into a license,, charged a fee for it, and then took away the right, and then the property proving that right. That’s what I do because I don’t plan on getting shot for digging through a bag or somewhere they can’t see my hands. It sucks that it’s like that, but do what you can to make sure they feel safe at all times. And props to you guys for keeping your composure the whole time.

They can only detain you for a reasonable amount of time. Detaining you for an hour for swerving is not reasonable to get you out the car

Then suddenly got swarmed on the interstate by at least 10 unmarks because I, and my vehicle IN TOW, fitted the description of a murder suspect who fled the scene. Who dafq carries out a 2 victim homicide in a white f250 with a damn 16ft enclosed trailer doing 65mph at lunchtime??? Let me guess, my window was down and I must have stolen it. These bastards had every gun drawn as they surrounded the truck. What if a f'ing tire blowed out on a car passing by? Long story short, got cuffed put in their car (all my shit left unattended on the interstate), taken to the scene for witness to ID. Now blessings kick in. The witness was my cousins high school girlfriend and it was her sister who got killed. She burst in to tears and ask those MFs why did they have me in custody and that she knew me. The suspect was SHORTER, had a DARKER complexion, and driving a MF'ing BURGUNDY SUV! WTF more can you get wrong about that intel. Now this fool gets away with murder and had a 2 hour head start! But he got got, and not by their sorry asses. This is America

The fact that you can own a car without a license is all the facts that you need. 3 wasn't driving, he's a passenger and he didn't commit a violation. Those guys were racially profiled, plain and simple. Any lawyer could tell you the same thing. It's sad when you get label sovereign citizen if you exercize your civil rights. Luckily I'm educated in that department so i win my cases all the time. He don't have to be rude to the officer, he could politely but firmly exercise his rights

Kevin first of all, I'm a well educated black man and i know when to pick my battles. All of my traffic situations are won in court. However, i like to keep money in my pocket and I'm not a coward. If an officer violates my rights, i will speak up cause i know what they are. I actually studied law as a part of my curriculum vitae and I'm not gonna let my thousands of dollars go to waste by making anyone walk all over me. Police profession is respectable, but too much officers abuse that power. The length of time those boys were detained was unnecessary and all they get was a warning. Simple waste of yours and my tax dollars at waste. Traffic infractions are really not that serious to keep people detained that long. You should practice what you believe in. Police officers can LEGALLY lie to you, and for that reason alone, that makes the whole system currupt because lots of us can become our profession by being acclimated to it. It's quite simple, if you are a passenger in a vehicle, you're not obligated to identify if you're not suspected of a crime and the officer should not ask in the first place. However, if you're the driver, then you're obligated to. It sucks that there's people who'll ridicule another for exercising a right/rights given to them by the same government who're abusing them. What's the point of having rights when you get ridiculed for doing exactly what's within your legal parimeters. Might as well go to North Korea and have the govt make every decision for you and treat you how they see fit.

My mom always said the good suffer for the bad. Although you guys were not hauling anything illegal, this is a tactic used by many smugglers to look legit. My friend was pulled over leaving a turnaround in Kansas headed back to Louisiana. They kept him there over 2 hours. Brought the dog, scoped his gas tank with a camera, went through everything he had. No drugs. My friend isn't black and was harrassed just the same.

No reason to take and keep a passenger's drivers license even if it is suspended. The passenger is not driving and the license is for identification. Btw he had you get out of the car because he didn't want to be recorded and put on UA-cam. Again don't think he was justified taking a passenger's license and keeping it. He wasn't driving.
