David was driving home for Christmas. I received the message," Mom, I am on my way way home..." Hours later, an officer was at my door telling me my son had been killed in an accident on a highway near Barrie..." David and his brother and two sisters were planning to Sky Dive on New years Day. I am sad to say only three of my four children went Sky diving ....thank you for loving my son and appreciating his music. I miss my son...

Music can make me feel so many things. This entire 10 minute song just wraps me in each of its components together like a warm hug.
Being a metal head and hopeless romantic, this song fuses those two qualities into something truely beautiful for me. I will forever love it.

@Ellie dearest Ellie, thank you for your message. David did and continues to motivate, inspire and sing the words for another at a time they need to hear that message that is perfect for them. You have heard me say I call David, “ David the poet.” Many are as courageous as you to not run from challenging times but lean into and face it, and do what you must do to get on the right chosen path. It is a tough reality to suddenly realize that we can be on a lonely path, our issues are the companions, and discover that we are 100% responsible for how we react or respond to internal and external issues. We all have issues, and some are better than others to make those invisible to the public. After Davids untimely death, one of his sisters said,” this grief, this sadness is like we wear, everyday, an invisible heavy , cold, wet wool coat…” only we know the weight of that burden as we wear a public face. You know yourself best, and you know who acknowledges your challenges, and as David said,” my lyrics are for many, but mostly for those who just need to be heard.” I ask you to carry Davids brilliant torch of hope and love, as you shine your own inner light. This light is for your own path, and bright enough for others who too may be on a dim path. ☀️❤️ I feel my greatest achievement was to be a Mother for David, Michael, Laura and Marie. And now, because of David, I have become mama gold, proud of those who communicate with me. I am humble and so appreciative of the compassion, caring, and genuine words from those who miss David too! May we all in some way, feel his presence, be energized by his powerful soul and continue to find the perfect chosen path for our life. Let us all plan to go “ where there are living trees…” ❤️🌲🌳☀️

@@Gabriel-Cabana dearest Gabriel, what a wonderful rendition of Davids song! Thank you for singing Davids words that we not only hear but we feel those words. Another sings, “ is there love after love? “ yes, and I hope we all if even just once find the love David sings about that is,” deep and true,” my thoughts, never regret or apologize for love that was never returned. David once said, “ when I love someone, it is not so much for how I feel, but I want them to know what it feels like to be loved.” I wish for you Gabriel an abundance of all good things. @@matthiasdjveitmanndajenth5365 Dear Matthias, thank you for your message. I believe people discover David and his music at the perfect time for them. I truly hope David will continue to inspire and motivate you and help you find the perfect chosen path for you. as David said," life is not the destination, life is the journey." For me, I now am on a path of sorrow with no end, no destination, but I am daily recognizing glimmers of joy that coexist with grief. As time goes by, I feel more love than pain, but, I accept and understand living without my son, some days try to bury me under an avalanche of mixed emotion. May we all live a life with meaning, be remembered and remain as unforgettable like David. I wish we could love him back to life, but cannot, but we can carry Davids torch of hope and love, as we shine our own inner light too, lighting our own path, and bright enough to cast light for others who may be on a dim path. stay safe, stay well, and," love the living...:" your Mama Gold

@@EstherJussila Esther, thank you for your insightful words. They truly mean more to me than you could ever know. I've written many essays that reference David's works, because of how much your son and you have taught me. It's difficult for me to find words that describe my gratitude towards your family. I agree with what you said about David's music finding us all at the right moments in life and would add that his music has always been there for us all. Having a rough slice of life has always given me a deeper appreciation for his music. The ordering Grey Skies and Electric Lights, the ultimate beauty David shows us with Finality, and his ability to make Alternate Ending seem like a lullaby lulling us to sleep. As David once sang, "it is a talent of the soul
to discover the joys in pain". I feel that without context this provides us a very important lesson: on the darkest of nights we have the light of knowing that there are thousands of us who were helped by David. To me, my daily glimmers of joy that coexist with grief were David's music that gave me hope that I was not alone. Thank you so much for the wisdom you've given us.

Hello Mama Gold, I just wanted to reach out again. Not sure you remember me, but we exchanged comments here a few weeks back. Here I am, listening to David belting out this haunting tune. I scanned the comments to see that you’d asked us to share this music. I thought you should know that I have spread Woods of Ypres like wildfire. I got my friend into them, he showed his sister and she became enamored. My husband and I listen regularly. We showed our friends Tim & Sara. David’s voice is like salve to my soul in the troubled times I’m traversing. There isn’t any other band whose music I’ve connected with quite like this. Thank you for blessing the world with your son. I wish he could’ve stayed with us much longer than he did. Yesterday was my late husband’s birthday and I’ve lamented several times that I never got to show him Woods of Ypres. He was the bassist for a metal band. Although he didn’t always like the recommendations I made 😞 I know he would’ve treasured WoY. Anyway, sorry for the word vomit. I hope all is well with you and that you have a lovely weekend.

This album has helped me so much as an athiest dealing with death and grief. It helped me accept oblivion and that death is a natural part of life. That dying I'm doing my part to give back to nature and to keep a balance. I accepted my mom's death a whole lot better understanding parts of her body is incorporated into this world. We shed cells and out are fed upon by insects and bacteria. Our chromosomes and protein are absorbed by other organisms and incorporated into their cells. We are made of particles that keeps getting moved around on this world and through the universe. So I see my dead loved ones continuously around me as parts of other organisms. I feel much better. Nature is so much grander than a God.

Today marks ten years. David's music has gotten me through some of the worst and most difficult times in my life, his lyrics and themes always somehow perfectly mirroring how I was feeling at the time. Regardless of what this song says, you will never truly die, always living through your music and in the lives of those who have connected with it. We miss you. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything.

This is the band I've been searching for... only to find that David Gold passed away a little over a month before I "discovered" them :'( It's strange how new I am to this band and yet they have influenced me so much. Not a day goes by in which I don't listen to/sing along to Woods of Ypres. The great ones die young. R.I.P. David Gold, Layne Staley, Peter Steele...

I go walking late at night, Just Woods of Ypres, the night and I. I often feel alone despite all of my friends, girlfriend and family. I don't know why, I have always felt empty. But every time I step outside of my door, put my hoodie on and press play I no longer feel empty. As if someone breathed life into my lungs... as if somebody understands.

    [Verse 1]
To mourn the end is to say goodbye
Not to yearn for that which we will never have again
We cry for our life together - because we know it will end
And we try to understand, how we could ever love again
    [Chorus]
Save your tears, at the end of our time...
We've cried enough in our lives, at the end of our time
    Just kiss my ashes goodbye
    [Verse 2]
We miss them so much now that they are gone
Took them for granted for living, so long
We read their words again, and we listen to them again
As we start to understand, what they were trying to say, all along
    [Chorus]
    Ohhhh, save your tears
At the end of our time, kiss my ashes goodbye
    Whoa! Kiss my ashes goodbye

All our thoughts go out to you, Esther, and your family.
I just recently discovered Woods of Ypres and David's music and wonderful voice and words. It's a shame when a mother loses a son and it's also a shame when the world loses such a talented musician. But his music made him immortal. Maybe that thought will help you a bit to overcome the pain.
All the best and my condolences.
