Something you might like, it´s what happened to river Turia in Valencia, Spain (3rd biggest city in the country). There was a huge flooding several decades ago, which caused extraordinary damage. As a result, Valencians moved the natural riverbank to the outskirts, to prevent any more damage. And with the empty, "natural" riverbank, they created a huge park (roughly 2.5 times the length of Central Park, NY), that basically allows you walk from the northernost parts of the city, to the sea, barely touching asphalt. One of the "hidden" gems of Spain, that many foreigners don´t know about. IMO... Best!
And that’s what happens when you build a city in a ‘floodable’ area. What’s greenest? Maybe not to build your city there, no flood problems from the first day and a lot of millions saved (both in lives and euros)

You should do a bit more research. The ruling party opposed a proposition to limit car traffic flow into the city center, though later they just rebranded it; Madrid also notoriously opposed the energy saving restrictions coming from the central government and challenged it in the courts; back in the day, municipal authorities were caught placing smog detectors in parks so as to provide false pollution statistics. I don't think the scale of the size of Madrid is understood. The population density is massive and this underway is vital for comunication and basic supplies to the area. Density 5,300 people /km2 (14,000/sq mi). And it has several forests within this area, so it is actually more packed. They also build storm water reservoires alonside with the buried roads. All part of the revitalization of the river. ua-cam.com/video/EeS_vyx-GzQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CanaldeIsabelII And the public transport sistem is huge. I've never had a car or even a drivers license. But something is true and it is that it has a lot of hills that make only bike transport impossible but for the fittest. Amsterdam, London, Paris etc are flat and biking is way easier. The last mayor put an electric cityshare service but it has been intentionaly left in disrepair so private Motorized scooter companies can flourish.
Medellín did the same thing. The idea was to replace the concrete-paved riverside of the Rio Medellín, and send the near freeway underground. On top of it, The City authority built a park with a huge causeway, so commoners can cross on foot comfortably from one district to another. Something that was actually impossible, previous years before.
They should plant Coastal Redwoods like they do in California’s Central Valley these trees do well in Mediterranean climate another good tree would be the Arizona cypress or the Picea Chihuahuana 🌲 🌳 ⛰
So the did not remove the highway they just buried the highway... I wonder what will happen if a major earthquake hits Madrid? Will the buried highway become a major death scene?
There are alot of buried buildings, lots of shopping malls have basements, there are train tunnels and car tunnels all over the world, why would you think this one is going to become a major death scene? Spain does have strict building regulations aswell, and the earthquakes that are measured in spain are mostly very light at the moment on active in the south of Spain.
@Leaf of Life Lisbon, Portugal had a huge tsunami disaster in the 1600s and Madrid, Spain is also very vulnerable. Spain could easily experience a earthquake with a tsunami that reaches six meters.
@@b_uppy Madrid is 600m. high, almost surrounded by mountains and 400km. from the nearest ocean. No there will NOT be a tsunami washing away the city any time soon. Earthquakes are also extremely rare and weak in the whole of Spain.
Spain has so many deforested areas they need to replant trees and they have the money to do it. there are so many areas that have been stripped of forest on the Iberian Peninsula if they'd replanted all the deforested areas they'd probably get more rainy days to cool their cities down.
Walter Jehne proposes creating frequent, very localized rainwater harvesting earthworks to support regreening. These could be made with onsite materials. The regreening needs to include trees to assist in soil rebuilding as that is what will correct more problems with Madrid's environmental degradation. Mark Shepard's techniques of adapting farming methods to mimic local biomes would be a clever strategy that increases food/livestock feed production while restoring soil, and habitat for wildlife.
Of course it looks nicer on the surface. But the traffic hasn't magically disappeared. It has simply moved underground to even wider highways. Out of sight, out of mind. But the traffic jams and chaos have remained. Just like the Big Dig in Boston just added more underground lanes, but attracted even more traffic resulting in traffic jams but now underground ...
Ive lived in Madrid for most of my life. Until the pandemic the city was dreadfully polluted with smog and had been like that for decades. Local government basically called the population stupid by denying the existence of "la boina ".Unfortunately, there has been a certain return to that situation with the increasing traffic and insufficient public transport which doesnt encourage people to use it in spite of the reduction by half in cost of the monthly transport pass
Excellent video. Thank you very much. Hats off. Urban riparian corridor restoration is a major logistical and political (notice I did not say it was not practical! = )) nightmare. Property rights and labyrinthine/outdated/inane water laws are so disconnected from the needs of our current reality. Entire riparian ecologies can be left to deflate through lack of "productive turnover. or over the protection of singular species at times. Glad to have seen some recent movements in making positive change and the people of the community of Madrid featured, give hope.
Think part of the problem is the religious adherence to grey (aka concrete/asphalt) infrastructure. Much of it could be bypassed by being clever. Think property rights are okay and protective but much of the zoning and banking practices are what are leading to the huge inequities and a reappearance of serfdom...
@@b_uppy Absolutely. Point taken on property rights. Property is one of the few ways to break intergenerational deadbolts in improving quality of individual lives and thereby communities. Agree with the serfdom observation. Grateful for the conversation!
It would have been nicer if they made 1 side a flood plain that they could have been used for parkland. Instead, its still within a channel. Better than nothing I guess.
@@antonioalcazar5749 Thanks, so you are saying that upstream there are open areas that this river flows through? If there are other areas where people can enjoy a more natural river then all is good. BTW I'm near Los Angeles California so if you want to see a river that is really non natural, look up the Los Angeles river. Its all strictly for flood control since LA gets very little rain. Every 30 years or so LA will get 3 or 4 times normal rain and it all runs off to the ocean.
If you are planning on visiting Madrid, id suggest come in spring or autumn. Summer months are hot, and almost everything are close because people like to go to the beach. Winters can get very cold and wet.
Leaf of Life, I really love what you do, but please consider that it is against the Christian religion to see half naked women ie. women in those indecent swim suits that you showed here. Jesus Christ says that if a person has looked at a man or woman with sexual thoughts then they have committed adultery in their heart and He says that it isn’t good for a man or a woman to see someone’s erogenous zones if they aren’t married to that person, save medical or emergency scenarios. That said, I hope you will consider people like me who love their wives and avoid putting images of half naked women in your docs, because you are doing a wonderful and important job here and I really hope to keep watching these. Those women can wear shorts and tops that cover their breasts more, that would be good and they would look like wiser women, the way you look in this video due to your shorts being an appropriate length. . Thank you for that. I’m so thankful to see what Madrid is doing. I hope I can be part of the effort to make cities more environmentally responsible and more comfortable as well. I think they should plant vines along the sides of buildings and I think they should attach planters to the sides of buildings wherein trees or shrubs can filter and catch rain water. Also, I hope they plant Sycamore trees along the river, or trees like them that filter and store tons of water, this would be very good. Praise God for Madrid’s efforts! Hope to see more cities doing this. Thank you
Hi there, I think you are asking the wrong the people to change, there is not much we can do about your issue with skin. Spain is culturally very liberal and it is acceptable to be nude on the beach. You will have to talk with officials in Spain if you want this to change. All the best to you
Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed.
More rail is crucial to the 'last mile' strategy. It increases accessibility to a larger area making the whole strayegy much more practical. I've yet to see spots for bikes/trikes/quads on trains though I think it would add to flexibility/viability to the system. Think ebikes are adding accessibility to disabled people as well. Think bike paths that offer shorter routes than those offered by vehicles would be a strategic move...
Boston, MA removed a big monster 👹 elevated highway 🛣 and rebuilt it underground. The area where the highway 🛣 split the city 🏙 in two has now been used to build parks and plazas. They also build storm water reservoires alonside with the buried roads. All part of the revitalization of the river. ua-cam.com/video/EeS_vyx-GzQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CanaldeIsabelII
And the public transport sistem is huge.
This channel made a video about it already did you see it?
You ever do a video on Singapore? They do everything right. That’s how to build a (green) city.
They should plant Coastal Redwoods like they do in California’s Central Valley these trees do well in Mediterranean climate another good tree would be the Arizona cypress or the Picea Chihuahuana 🌲 🌳 ⛰
Check AMUNAS. A water preservation system in the Mountains of Peru. It comes from the Incas. Greeting from Lima, Peru
Sounds interesting.
@Leaf of Life
Lisbon, Portugal had a huge tsunami disaster in the 1600s and Madrid, Spain is also very vulnerable. Spain could easily experience a earthquake with a tsunami that reaches six meters.
Think it was a silly, car centric move to create a car tunnel. Rail would make more sense...
@@LeafofLifeWorld I used to live in California I saw horrors there after major earthquakes hit urban areas.
@@b_uppy Madrid is 600m. high, almost surrounded by mountains and 400km. from the nearest ocean. No there will NOT be a tsunami washing away the city any time soon. Earthquakes are also extremely rare and weak in the whole of Spain.
PORTUGUESE BR?
Someone who says that really does not know Spain
This is by far one of my fave channels
No more concrete jungles positive vibes Hawaiian lifestyle
You look hot, I would love to visit this spot when in Madrid, hydrate.
😆 yea it was quite hot! I had my water bottle but staying hydrated was difficult, you feel thirsty all the time 😅
@@LeafofLifeWorld Bet you did
If you are planning on visiting Madrid, id suggest come in spring or autumn.

Thanks to the Left of Manuela Carmena!
Who wrote this rubbish? Or rather, who paid for it?

How?
Boston, MA removed a big monster 👹 elevated highway 🛣 and rebuilt it underground. The area where the highway 🛣 split the city 🏙 in two has now been used to build parks and plazas. What Boston did is often known to locals as “The Big Dig”. You can find out more about this here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig
Yeah, pretty similar to this project, only that the M-30 dig was done much faster and with a much smaller budget (even though the tunnels are longer).
@@alfrredd I do not know how much the cost of the Boston project was but the cost of Madrid's was not the few hundred million mentioned in the video but no less than 6.000 million euros, at a time the euro had significantly more value than the US dollar.
@@jmtrevijano9160 Boston's price tag is 22 Billion USD for 2.4km of tunnel. (11 billion per km) , the are still paying interest (until 2038). Madrid tunnels are 10km per section (20km. both ways) at a cost of 8 billion Euro (400 million per km).
