    You beat me to it. I was gonna comment on how good mornings destroyed Bruce Lee, and possibly caused his death from having to take pain killers which supposedly caused an adverse reaction (or the death touch, if we want to go off legends).

    Geoff I got your book around a month ago. I absolutely love it. Its in full colour, has big pages, and has all the information you need. The fact that you teach people about anatomy is very important, I always remember I was doing lat pulldowns in high school and didn't even know what muscles I was working out.
    And its great you have the courage to say barbell bench press isn't that good of an exercise, even though people can't resist doing it because its super iconic.
    Theres a spelling error on the spine of the book, but overall its 5 stars.

    I found your comments about not feeling an isolation due to the complexity of these movements helpful. My RDLs are pretty strict but, if anything, I’ve always just felt my erectors bracing, so after watching this I’m going to add some weighted back extensions (F the good mornings man. I’m 52.). Great video Geoff

    I 100% swear by back extensions loaded from the ground to strengthen my deadlift lockout. I tend to use a wider grip (akin to a snatch grip) to get some added range of motion, or alternatively a heavier dumbbell/kettlebell as opposed to a barbbell. I almost never see people actually treating hypers like a serious exercise. I decided to start approaching them with the same sincerity I do my other accessory exercises last year, and they've made a ton of difference for me.

    My posterior chain training consists of:
    HIP EXTENSION:
    1. RDLs. Low to medium reps. Emphasis on eccentric hamstring stretch. I often do single leg RDLs. This exercise is best for muscle damage / DOMS and stretch-mediated hypertrophy.
    2. 45-degree hip extensions. Medium to high-reps. I often do dropsets. Emphasis on pump. This exercise is best for metabolic stress.
    3. Horizontal hip extensions. Low to medum reps. Emphasis on concentric contraction. This exercise is best for mechanical tension.
    4. Hip thrust. Medium reps. Emphasis on concentric contraction. This exercise is best for isolating glutes.
    KNEE FLEXION:
    1. Razor curls (on GHD). Emphasis on eccentric hamstring stretch.
    2. Eccentric only Nordic curls. Emphasis on eccentric hamstring stretch. Unique exercise because of eccentric overload.
    3. Seated leg curl machine. High reps and dropsets. Emphasis on pump. Best exercise for metabolic stress.
    SPINAL ERECTION:
    1. "Reverse planks" I.E isometric hip extensions. I do isometric holds on the 45-degree hip extension bench. This isometrically strengthens the erectors.
    I don't do much conventional deadlift, because I do a lot of quad training (squats, split squats, lunges, leg extensions) and find the deadlift is mostly redundant. Would rather choose pure hip hinge movements that don't involve quads.

    Good vid. I started RDLs with a sketchy turnaround just below the knee, now I have good stability reversing it an inch from the floor. Took about a year. That Klokov pull will be next for me.
    Have you checked out Joe DeFranco? He seems unusually sane for UA-cam fitness. He trains a lot of NFL players, combining strength training, running, and injury prevention. Seems very human.

    As a woman I prefer to use stiff leg for glutes. doing the stiff leg deficit would be engaging more or my lower back than my glutes so I’ll stick to the regular version .

    I can see why Dan Green might do heavy good mornings because of the carryover to squats, but I just can't comfortably get low enough to get a satisfying ham stretch/contraction. Did a lot of 45 degree hip extensions (that's what they're called in my W/O log anyway) while recovering from a biceps tear, love the ham stretch, but with significant added weight the pressure on the knees is pretty uncomfortable. Been working up slowly on DB SLDLs, really loving them. Great for erectors, traps, rear delts as well as hams. Probably my favorite exercise right now.
    Nice accessory deadlift roundup.

    Thoughts of the sumo deadlift? I prefer doing Sumo instead of Conventional because my lower body is stronger and the leg drive helps a lot. But this is also because I don't want to tax my lower back to much as this is followed up by squats and rows later in the workout (Ik that it sounds like overkill but this is what I'm restricted to this rn)

    I can do 120kg RDL 8 reps, but I can only do 60kg good morning with 8 reps. Good morning is very taxing on my erector while not enough stimulus on glutes.

    20:50 I wish people actually accepted this advice. Idk how many times I've seen people get this answer and brush it off and continue asking "but whats best?"
    I've personally tried all of these, and RDLs are my absolute favorite. I dont have the hip mobility for deficit deadlifts (mainly due to my trex arms) cause those tore my lower back up in a bad way. I like banded good mornings, but I refuse to try barbell good mornings cause the risk to reward ration is bad. Snatch grip deadlifts are insanely difficult, I've only tried them a handful of times and they make me regret existing. I love hyper extensions and GHRs. I don't really deadlift anymore, I just focus on high rep (12-20) RDLs/GHR/hyper extensions, and might do three sets of 1-2 reps of deadlifts with my RDL weight just to keep my form from falling apart

    Brian Alsruhe pronounces his name "ALLS-rooah". Pretty sure he said it on one of his breathing and bracing videos.
    Awesome rogue's gallery of powerlifters - me likey. Dan Green must be a young pup in the photo someone used on Quora - he's a whole load thicker than I would have guessed judging from these videos.
    The first videos you used as examples of stiff-legged deadlifts look like RDLs to me. Shins vs floor isn't the only difference. Stiff-legged deadlifts are just that - your knees are locked straight and you look like a cantilever crane lifting the weight. With RDLs, you hold your knees at a fixed slightly-bent angle and keep the bar closer.
    My understanding of good mornings are that they also are done with quite straight legs, and the back can be straight or rounded. Maybe the examples are bending their legs because they are using heavier weights? Once someone figured out how to rig up a back extension bench, good mornings seem like they got rare in a hurry.
    Thanks for including snatch-grip DLs. They might be less well known outside of Oly lifting circles. People may see deadlifts done holding the plates on gym fail videos - those are more of a strongman/odd lift trick. You have to have excellent grip, and people either are really impressed or think you're totally nuts.

    Now here's where I got into big discussions even in uni
    What you are doing at 9:06 I believe it to be a stiff legged romanian deadlift. Why? Because: you're keeping your legs stiff and deadlifting with the barbell never touching the ground.
    If you were to do a proper romanian deadlift, than by definition you would have to do a proper deadlift (which means that the leg drive is included!!) and barbell never touches the ground.
    It seems so logical to me, yet no one agrees. Idk why

      Everyone's RDL is a bit different. There's no need to add the stiff legged moniker as most are quite stiff legged. Some slight leg drive or upper back grounding for some people...still RDLs. It's a broad term.

    I absolutely love Romanian Deadlifts. But I don't know the strength standards for them.
    Geoff you said people's RDLs should be 60% of their typical deadlift. So should an intermediate lifter be doing around 200 lbs?

      My book has strength standards but I'm actually not a huge fan of them in general. What a beginner, intermediate or advanced "should" be doing isn't really actionable information.

    What's the general rule of thumb for the deficit for deadlifts? Is it just whatever is comfortable? Does increasing the deficit have value (to a point, anyway)? Most I've seen doing them don't go beyond two plates, so I assume going above that doesn't offer as much benefit versus the stress it puts on the back.

      Quite individual. Just be consistent, doin't do 2 inches one week, 4 inches the next, then 6 inches later and write them down as the same thing.

    Do you think there’s a difference in hamstring and glute recruitment with the Hexbar stiff leg being that your arms are at your sides? I feel that I feel it a little less in my hamstrings but can’t exactly put my finger on where I’m really feeling it the most. Not much information on it

      Yes, there will be less hamstrings, as the weight is "closer" to you, so the moment arm at the hips is less. Plus if using the high handles ROM is less. This is part of the reason that almost everyone can trap bar deadlift more than a normal barbell deadlift.
      A trap bar tends to bring in more quads so you don't really "feel" it anywhere, as the stress/tension is spread more evenly.

      I'm definitely the wrong guy to ask about the growth side of things, I'm really bad at the marketing/growth side of things, much better at the information/content part.
      I'd say:
      1. Create really, really good content (I'm working on that)
      2. Collab with others if possible
      3. Find a way to drive traffic to your page
      4. Convert to new subs and keep them coming back/clicking.
      It's definitely not easy. UA-cam is not friendly to smaller creators unless you get extremely clickbaity and get a high click through rate.

      I second everything that Geoffrey said. I started my channel about 9 months ago and can tell you is not an easy thing to do at all. Assuming fitness is your intended topic, just realize it’s a really saturated space, and the only way you’re going to have a chance to stand out is by being very different than everyone else out there. In my case, my way of standing out from the crowd is by producing almost TV show quality videos that present some of the best science based info in interesting, easy to understand, and cinematic ways. Geoffrey has his own unique style with top notch quality info as well, he covers bodybuilding/powerlifting, and he gets really into the details as you know (and he makes a LOT more videos than I do).
      Find a niche that you feel you specialize in and make sure you provide value and deliver it in a unique way from everyone else out there. And I would also HIGHLY recommend only starting a fitness channel if you’re actually a qualified fitness professional, as there are far too many unqualified people making “fitness content” while also spreading lots of misinformation because they don’t have the knowledge base or credentials needed to actually create quality accurate info.       Parallel is better for a glute contraction, not quite as good for a hamstring stretch. Both are good. Parallel is a little tricker to load the way I showed in some cases.

      Powerclean it to shoulders, put it on traps, step into the machine, do the set, then push press it overhead, catch it at hips, put it on ground.

      Probably RDLs with a bit more knee bend. But I generally prefer unilateral movements like lunges or hip thrusts for glutes overall.

      I want to limit my quads, so dont want to do any lunges. As i'm quad dominant. I sit alot too, so got tight hipflexors and hamstrings.

    Where do you think should deadlifts be in an upper lower split? I'm finding it hard to adjust them anywhere probably since I'm a noob🤣🤣

      I know you're asking for my advice but I usually put them on my back focused day and I do them first. I found them to be too fatiguing to do on lower days, especially when squatting.

      Deadlift anchors a back day. (This is based on a powerlifting training pattern. Some guys may only deadlift every 10-14 days once they have been lifting a few years.)
      If you are super short on training time, like 2 days a week, you may need to put the deadlift itself on the squat day, and the accessory back work on the bench day.

      Hard to say. Something like sumo or RDLs are more leg dominant so probably a lower day. Stiff legged or deficit deadlifts tend to be a lot of erector and lat. Kinda up to you.

      Although I do not have a back day since I'm doing an upper lower split. I would've done deadlifts on upper body day but I'm afraid if I do that will affect my squats negatively because of a weak back the next day. So I thought of doing deadlifts on lower body day. Since there are two lower body days in a week, maybe one day would focus more on squats and another on deadlifts? What do you guys think about that?

    Your back extension form is terrible. Watch any Olympic Weightlifter. They will only go up to parallel, maybe a little bit past parallel. You're going way too high. That's a glute ham raise that you're doing.
